Project Management

The project management profession is proliferating, and many company executives have ascertained that efficient and effective project management is required to help them achieve their strategic goals and objectives. However, there are challenges; according to the Standish group, 52% of all IT projects are delivered at 189% of budget, and 70% of all IT projects are late. As a result, many company executives are requiring project managers to enhance their project management acumen and become "leaders" who manage projects. Essentially, leaders who are equipped with business and domain knowledge, pragmatic tools and techniques, conflict resolution skills, and soft skills among others, that will galvanize their project teams and create an environment in which project success is the norm.Project Management: Novice-To-Expert is a qualitative comparative case study approach that investigates how project managers in the context of the Engineering Procurement and Construction management (EPCM) industry initiate, navigate, and successfully traverse the arduous, but rewarding path that the author calls the "Novice-To-Expert Continuum." Specifically, this book is an expose on "how project managers become experts?" The book primarily focuses on the EPCM industry, but the information uncovered by this research, can be applied to other professions such as IT, Healthcare, Banking, library science, Real Estate, Marketing, Sales, Accounting, Finance, government, sanitation, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and beyond. The three major constructs of expertise: Absolute, relative, and the theory of deliberate practice are used as the study's conceptual framework, along with project management, continuing professional education (CPE) and informal learning to investigate, and ultimately expound on how project managers become experts in the context of the EPCM industry and other industries as mentioned above.

The Incredibly Human Henson Blayze

The Incredibly Human Henson Blayze

Derrick Barnes

In the small town of Great Mountain, Mississippi, all eyes are on Henson Blayze, a thirteen-year-old football phenom who many have wondered if he was super-human. The predominately white townsfolk have been waiting for Henson to play senior school ball, and now they’re overjoyed to finally possess an elite Black athlete of their own. Until a horrifying incident forces Henson to speak out about injustice. Until he says that he might not play football anymore. Until he quickly learns he isn’t as loved by the people as he thought. In that moment, Henson’s town is divided into two chaotic sides when all he wants is justice. Even his best friends and his father can’t see eye to eye. When he is told to play ball again or else, Henson must decide whether he was born to entertain people who may not even see him as human, or if he’s destined for a different kind of greatness. Derrick Barnes’s groundbreaking novel masterfully combines a modern-day allegory with classic-style tall tales to weave a compelling story of America’s strange obsession with the Black body, relegated to labour or entertainment. Spanning the 1800s to today, it shows how much has changed over centuries. . . and, at the same time, how little.

Object Oriented Computer Systems Engineering

Object Oriented Computer Systems Engineering

Derrick Morris; David Evans; Peter Green; Colin Theaker

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
1996
nidottu
This book addresses issues concerning the engineering of system prod ucts that make use of computing technology. These systems may be prod ucts in their own right, for example a computer, or they may be the computerised control systems inside larger products, such as factory automation systems, transportation systems and vehicles, and personal appliances such as portable telephones. In using the term engineering the authors have in mind a development process that operates in an integrated sequence of steps, employing defined techniques that have some scientific basis. Furthermore we expect the operation of the stages to be subject to controls and standards that result in a product fit for its intended purpose, both in the hands of its users and as a business venture. Thus the process must take account of a wide range of requirements relating to function, cost, size, reliabili ty and so on. It is more difficult to define the meaning of computing technology. These days this involves much more than computers and software. For example, many tasks that might be performed by software running in a general purpose computer can also be performed directly by the basic technology used to construct a computer, namely digital hardware. However, hardware need not always be digital; we live in an analogue world, hence analogue signals appear on the boundaries of our systems and it can sometimes be advantageous to allow them to penetrate further.

The Correctness-by-Construction Approach to Programming

The Correctness-by-Construction Approach to Programming

The focus of this book is on bridging the gap between two extreme methods for developing software. On the one hand, there are texts and approaches that are so formal that they scare off all but the most dedicated theoretical computer scientists. On the other, there are some who believe that any measure of formality is a waste of time, resulting in software that is developed by following gut feelings and intuitions.Kourie and Watson advocate an approach known as “correctness-by-construction,” a technique to derive algorithms that relies on formal theory, but that requires such theory to be deployed in a very systematic and pragmatic way. First they provide the key theoretical background (like first-order predicate logic or refinement laws) that is needed to understand and apply the method. They then detail a series of graded examples ranging from binary search to lattice cover graph construction and finite automata minimization in order to show how it can be applied to increasingly complex algorithmic problems. The principal purpose of this book is to change the way software developers approach their task at programming-in-the-small level, with a view to improving code quality. Thus it coheres with both the IEEE’s Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) recommendations, which identifies themes covered in this book as part of the software engineer’s arsenal of tools and methods, and with the goals of the Software Engineering Method and Theory (SEMAT) initiative, which aims to “refound software engineering based on a solid theory.”
