Mining various archives and newspaper repositories, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, Nineteenth-Century Pioneer of Modern Art Criticism provides the first full-length study of a remarkable woman and heretofore neglected art critic. Pennell, a prolific 'New Art Critic', helped formulate and develop formalist methodology in Britain at the end of the nineteenth century, which she applied to her mostly anonymous or pseudonymous reviews published in numerous American and British newspapers and periodicals between 1883 and 1923. A bibliography of her art criticism is included as an appendix. In addition to advocating an advanced way in which to view art, Pennell used her platform to promote the work of ’new’ artists, including Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas, which had only recently been introduced to British audiences. In particular, Pennell championed the work of James McNeill Whistler for whom she, along with her husband, the artist Joseph Pennell, wrote a biography. Examination of her contributions to the late Victorian art world also highlights the pivotal role of criticism in the production and consumption of art in general, a point which is often ignored.

This early work by Elinor Glyn was originally published in 1909 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Elizabeth Visits America' is a tale of a woman travelling across America and the romantic liaisons she experiences along the way. Elinor Glyn was born on 17th October 1864 in Saint Helier, Jersey. She was the youngest daughter of a civil engineer, Douglas Southerland, and his wife Elinor Saunders. Elinor Glyn began her writing career in 1900 and was a pioneer of the risqu and romantic fiction genre. She went on to write many popular books such as 'Beyond the Rocks' (1906), 'Love's Blindness' (1926), and 'It' (1927), in which she coined the term 'It', meaning the animal magnetism that some individuals possess.
This is a new reading of this intensely private 20th century American poet's work. Linda Anderson explores Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, from her early days at Vassar College to her last great poems in Geography III and the later uncollected poems. Drawing generously on Bishop's notebooks and letters, the book situates Bishop both in her historical and cultural context and in terms of her own writing process, where the years between beginning a poem and completing it, for which Bishop is legendary, are seen as a necessary part of their composition.
