This book considers the work of Erich Fromm as it can be applied to radical Left political strategy. It aims primarily to demonstrate the relevance of his ideas to contemporary radical Left strategy and to contribute to the revitalization of critical social theory and its relationship to radical praxis. Specifically, the case is made throughout this volume that Fromm’s humanist socialism offers a unique set of critical tools for impugning entrenched assumptions and ossified debates within the contemporary radical Left about what struggles against capitalist exploitation and myriad interconnected social oppressions can and should look like. Four vantage points are identified and explored to this end. The first focuses on the question of what Fromm’s theoretical contributions can teach us about what radical activism and resistance ought to look like across multiple terrains of struggle. The second asks what Fromm’s insights regarding social character can teach us about the forces that stifle productiveness and reproduce domination. In a more utopian vein, it asks what society might look like once domination has been eliminated. The third places Fromm in dialogue with diverse voices on the Left, including prominent psychoanalysts and social and political theorists, with an eye toward lingering tensions and disagreements about radical social change. The fourth asks why the Right has gained ground politically in recent years and what can be done to contain it, and offers psychoanalytically inflected reflections on the pernicious effects of group narcissism on individuals’ political agency.

In seiner Autobiographie beschreibt der Schweizer Dirigent und Komponist Erich Schmid (1907-2000) die Stationen seines Lebens: Seine Kindheit im reformierten Elternhaus in Balsthal, seine Ausbildung in Solothurn, Frankfurt am Main und Berlin - als Kompositionsstudent von Arnold Schoenberg -, sein Wirken als Musikdirektor in Glarus sowie als Leiter des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zurich. Schmid pragte das Glarner Musikleben wahrend uber funfzehn Jahren und spornte die Laienensembles zu erstaunlichen, national bewunderten Leistungen an. An der Zurcher Tonhalle pflegte Schmid nicht nur das klassisch-romantische Repertoire, sondern setzte sich im Rahmen von "Musica viva"-Konzerten auch fur das zeitgenoessische Musikschaffen ein. Als Chronist seiner Zeit erlautert Schmid nicht nur minutioes sein musikalisches Wirken und seine Kompositionstatigkeit, sondern beschreibt auch die kulturpolitische Situation der Schweiz der 1920er bis 1950er Jahre. Die Autobiographie endet 1958 mit dem Wechsel Schmids zum Radio-Orchester Beromunster. Die Briefe von und an Erich Schmid dokumentieren das weite Spektrum seines Wirkens. In den Briefen an die Eltern findet besonders die Studienzeit in Frankfurt am Main und Berlin Darstellung. Aus dieser Lebensphase stammen auch die Kontakte zu Erich Itor Kahn, Alexander Molzahn, Peter Schacht, Matyas Seiber und naturlich zum Berliner Lehrmeister Arnold Schoenberg. Als Musikdirektor in Glarus wandte sich Schmid an Schweizer Komponistenkollegen wie Paul Muller-Zurich oder Robert Blum und fragte um Werke an. Daneben trat er mit Werner Reinhart, Paul Sacher, Willy Reich und Anton Webern in Kontakt, um gemeinsame Projekte zu verwirklichen. Die Korrespondenz mit Luigi Dallapiccola, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Michael Mann, Rene Leibowitz, Hermann Meier und Wladimir Vogel zeigt ausserdem Schmids wachsende nationale und internationale Vernetzung. Als Dirigent des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zurich und des Radio-Orchesters Beromunster konnte sich Schmid schliesslich auch in groesserem Rahmen fur zeitgenoessische Komponisten wie Klaus Huber, Marcel Mihalovici oder Ernst Toch einsetzen. Die vollstandig edierten Konzertprogramme aller von Schmid dirigierten und gespielten Konzerte der Studienzeit, der Tatigkeit als Musikdirektor in Glarus und als Leiter des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zurich, die in der Autobiographie Erwahnung finden, bieten einen Einblick in das vielseitige Repertoire von Schmid. Dieses reicht von der Renaissance und Barockmusik uber die klassisch-romantischen Standardwerke bis zum zeitgenoessischen Musikschaffen und zur Harmoniemusik. Ein Verzeichnis samtlicher in Schweizer Radiostudios erhaltener Tondokumente unter der Leitung oder Mitwirkung von Schmid dokumentiert zudem Schmids reiches Schaffen am Radio. Die Konzertprogramme und Radioaufnahmen werden durch ein Personen- und Werkregister erschlossen.

A newly compiled catalogue raisonné lists all of his works. The publication also contains numerous new photographs by Carsten Krohn, newly drawn plans and historical illustrations.

Ericka Beckman (born 1951) makes films without plots in a conventional sense, constituting them instead from themes: socialization, acculturation, competition and the organization of thoughts and memory. Since they are largely structured like games, they do not have characters; they have players. Like everything else about the films--the scenery, the props, the animation--the players are representatives, stand-ins contributing to Beckman's abstract ruminations on culture in a time-based medium. This lavishly illustrated reference monographs documents every film Ericka Beckman has made since her days as a CalArts graduate in the 1970s, and includes storyboards, production stills and notes, the librettos of her musicals, as well as a thorough photo-documentation of her multimedia installations. Erich Kästner hat sich zeitlebens mit der historischen Aufklärung beschäftigt. Namen wie Lessing, Kant, Rousseau, Wieland oder der junge Goethe sind dem Autor Kästner stets präsent. So dürfte sein Roman Fabian ohne Reflexionen über Lessing schwer verständlich bleiben und auch Kästners eigene Dissertation über Friedrich II. ist ein noch weitgehend ungehobener Quellenfundus, dem die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes u.a. kritisch nachgehen.
