Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse KBE (15 October 1881 - 14 February 1975) was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Born in Guildford, the third son of a British magistrate based in Hong Kong, Wodehouse spent happy teenage years at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life. After leaving school, he was employed by a bank but disliked the work and turned to writing in his spare time. His early novels were mostly school stories, but he later switched to comic fiction, creating several regular characters who became familiar to the public over the years. They include the jolly gentleman of leisure Bertie Wooster and his sagacious valet Jeeves; the immaculate and loquacious Psmith; Lord Emsworth and the Blandings Castle set; the Oldest Member, with stories about golf; and Mr Mulliner, with tall tales on subjects ranging from bibulous bishops to megalomaniac movie moguls. Most of Wodehouse's fiction is set in England, although he spent much of his life in the US and used New York and Hollywood as settings for some of his novels and short stories. He wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies during and after the First World War, together with Guy Bolton and Jerome Kern, that played an important part in the development of the American musical. He began the 1930s writing for MGM in Hollywood. In a 1931 interview, his na ve revelations of incompetence and extravagance in the studios caused a furore. In the same decade, his literary career reached a new peak.Wodehouse worked extensively on his books, sometimes having two or more in preparation simultaneously. He would take up to two years to build a plot and write a scenario of about thirty thousand words. After the scenario was complete he would write the story. Early in his career he would produce a novel in about three months, but he slowed in old age to around six months. He used a mixture of Edwardian slang, quotations from and allusions to numerous poets, and several literary techniques to produce a prose style that has been compared to comic poetry and musical comedy. Some critics of Wodehouse have considered his work flippant, but among his fans are former British prime ministers and many of his fellow writers. (wikipedia.org)

This early novel, written in collaboration with a friend, is a fascinating curiosity which suggests that Wodehouse might have become a very different, experimental sort of writer, had he continued to write in the same vein.Using multiple narrators, playing with literary stereotypes and identities, it tells the story of an aspiring young writer, James Orlebar Cloyster, prepared to do almost anything, first for success and then for gratification. By making Cloyster a mild, affable young man of the sort so familiar in his later novels, Wodehouse creates a comic disparity between the character’s lofty professions of virtue and his unscrupulous behaviour. As the story progresses, we realise that he is not unusual: all the main characters are unscrupulous in one way or another, ready to cheat and lie in pursuit of their ends, hence the title of the book. Not George Washington contains many fine scenes, and Cloyster’s narrative displays the calm mastery of story-telling Wodehouse had already made his own. If awkwardly executed, it is cleverly plotted, springing several surprises along the way. Clearly autobiographical in origin, it also invites readers to reflect on the nature of talent, fame, failure and success, villainy and honour - themes which continued to recur in the author’s work for another sixty years.

This rollicking semi-autobiographical novel weaves a tale of Wodehouse's early days as a writer, romance gone awry, and the colorful characters he encountered. James Orlebar Cloyster, in order to marry his true love, embarks on a scheme of such clever deception that he very nearly manages to ruin both his romance and his career. Told from multiple viewpoints-that of James, his fianc e, and friends-Not George Washington lampoons London society, literary pretension, the West End stage, playwrights, playgoers, bohemian life, and the newspapers of the day.

Fixed Point Theory In P-vector Spaces

Fixed Point Theory In P-vector Spaces

This monograph provides an updated development of fixed point theory under a unified framework of the 'best approximation approach' in p-vector spaces, a core component of nonlinear analysis in mathematics, where p?(0,1] (the same for p below unless specified). This book exposes some important contents of the new fixed point theory, with highlights in four parts.Specifically, the book focuses on the development of general new fixed point theory for both single-valued and set-valued mappings under the framework of p-vector and locally convex spaces for p?(0,1], including topological vector spaces and locally convex spaces as special cases. It provides affirmative answers to the Schauder conjecture under the general setting of p-vector spaces and locally p-convex spaces. The book establishes best approximation results for upper semicontinuous and 1-set contractive set-valued mappings, which are used as tools to establish new fixed point theorems for non-self set-valued mappings with either inward or outward set conditions under various situations. These results improve or unify corresponding results in the existing literature for nonlinear analysis and lay the foundation for the development of fixed point theorems in topological vector spaces since Schauder's conjecture was raised in 1930. In addition, this book demonstrates the power of the fixed point theorem by showing the equivalence among the Ekeland variational principle, Takahashi minimization theorem, Oettli-Théra theorem, Caristi-Kirk type fixed point theorem, and related principles in nonlinear functional analysis.Overall, this book provides an accessible way to establish the new theory in the development of fixed point theorems and results. It is designed to be understandable for senior undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, and related fields. We expect that this monograph will serve as a staple textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students, a reference book for researchers in the field of fixed point theory in nonlinear functional analysis, and an accessible resource for general readers in mathematics and related disciplines.

Henry George the greatest, most famous and most rejected of early American economists who trained himself in classical economics and developed a theory of a 'single tax'. There is much literature on many specific facets and aspects of George's work, but we lack a book which provides an overview of George's economics... until now!
