REPAY NO EVIL WITH EVIL...They say new beginnings bring opportunity. But no one is as evil and blinded by rage than Gabriel Grant. His quest for power and wealth have set his sights on the Creek family. After Leonard Creek failed to pay a $2,000 loan, Gabriel Grant collected with a lead bullet. One thing he didn't count on, Leonard's son, Jacob Creek...VENGEANCE IS MINE...It had been six years since Jacob stepped foot in Purgatory, Wyoming, but when the former Reverand suddenly died, Jacob took the opportunity to bring his family back to take over the mining community's church. But when Gabriel Grant demands that Jacob pay his father's debt, he'll stop at nothing to protect his family-but at what cost? Does Jacob Creek strap on his .45 Colt revolver, seeking vengeance, or will he watch everything burn?
In 1875, Clem Jenkins purchased a farm along the banks of Spencer Creek, just outside the town of Lebanon, Tennessee. The property bordered the farm of Thomas Masters, and, at least initially, the relationship between the two families, remained cordial. But once they disagreed concerning withdrawal of water from the creek, it seemed every conversation between the two men created an additional basis for an argument. Two men-each successful in getting exactly what they wanted, but doing so using two completely different methods. Clem achieved his desired result with force, using either his .45, or some other strong-arm method. George was successful while using his intellect, and his ability to persuade. Both approaches were successful in prior dealings with others. But neither method worked when it came to the issues involving each other. Whatever the issue might be-whether it involved water rights, their crops, their children, or their women-they simply could not agree on anything. So began a never-ending deadly game of conflict, litigation, and murder, involving the families, their spouses, their children and their grandchildren. Even as both families grew through the years and eventually moved to Nashville, the conflict continued, spilling out into the streets through four generations, until finally coming to a completely unpredictable ending in 2016.
Quentin Dettweiler or 'Q' as he's more commonly known, is a man of intense curiosity, passion, and taste. A man who finds himself living a life that is in direct antithesis of what he seeks. After migrating from his hometown in the Midwest, Q lives in Alma Perdida, a coastal inlet in sunny Southern California. He lives a sordid, robotic life - the life sold to many as the pathway to the American Dream. A 26-year old healthcare consultant by day, and uninspired by night, he passes day after day in tedium yearning for adventure he figures long lost, his only solace to put his thoughts and pains to paper. Directionless and achingly comfortable in a complacency beckoning him to dive in, Q is on the edge when he first encounters a man unlike any other: Jersig. Jersig is in his mid-thirties, the kind of man with airs about him, a man who seems to hold the key to the secrets of life. A wealthy, "self-made" native Californian son who prides himself on being able to spot innate talent hidden below the surface, Jersig quickly see's something in Q that piques his interest, and subsequently befriends him. As a friendship is forged, Q slowly starts to learn to actualize what he internally believed always to be true, but never dare voiced aloud: he possesses greatness inside him. More importantly, he can learn to draw it out, and use it to impact others. Perhaps Jersig does hold the key to the secrets of life...Or perhaps in all his mystery, he just holds secrets...potentially dangerous ones.
Writing and Victorianism asks the fundamental question 'what is Victorianism?' and offers a number of answers taken from methods and approaches which have been developed over the last ten years. This collection of essays, written by both new and established scholars from Britain and the U.S.A, develops many of the themes of nineteenth-century studies which have lately come to the fore, touching upon issues such as drugs, class, power and gender. Some essays reflect the interaction of word and image in the nineteenth-century, and the notion of the city as spectacle; others look at Victorian science finding a connection between writing and the growth of psychology and psychiatry on the one hand and with the power of scientific materialism on the other. As well as key figures such as Dickens, Tennyson and Wilde, a host of new names are introduced including working-class writers attempting to define themselves and writers in the Periodical press who, once anonymous, exercised a great influence over Victorian politics, taste, and social ideals. From these observations there emerges a need for self-definition in Victorian writing. History, ancestry, and the past all play their part in figuring the present in the nineteenth-century, and many of these studies foreground the problem of literary, social, and psychological identity.
