"A Man in Saffron Robes" offers a unique Thai perspective on the tradition of entering the monkhood for the rainy-season retreat called "phansa". It is also the story of one man's journey of exploration to the far north of Thailand and his reflections on the culture and people of the North as seen through the eyes of this southerner from Nakhon Si Thammarat then living near the bustling metropolis of Bangkok. In 1974 Maitree Limpichart, author, newspaper columnist and government official, temporarily left a wife and two children behind to put on the saffron robes of a Buddhist monk. He traveled from Bangkok to Thailand's northwestern-most province of Mae Hong Son, situated not far from the frontier with Burma (Myanmar). There, along with the other monks at the hilltop temple of Wat Phrathat Doi Kong Mu, he joined in the daily activities of the brotherhood of monks, the sangha. Maitree Limpichart's story, however, is not a scholarly explication of what it means to study the Dhamma, the Buddha's Teachings, in the contemplative environment of the temple. Rather it is the story of a lay individual's experiences with Buddhism and the sangha. Those who have visited or lived in upcountry Thailand will find sketches of life, characters and events that will no doubt trigger more than a recollection or two. Those who have no or only a passing acquaintance with Thailand or Buddhism will find stories here that are accessible, engaging, sometimes humorous, always curious and illuminating. Readers will take pleasure in this book for its humor, its poignancy, its exotic and wondrous setting, and for the likeable and interesting characters one meets along the way.

Included here are the story of a 30-something New Yorker who was unable to stop fantasizing about suicide until he conveys healing words from her dead fiance; an account of an encounter with a grieving young woman in a drugstore--and the message he conveys from her dead six-year-old son; and a disturbing story of an unsolved murder case solved by information he received from the other side.Above all, this is a book filled with comfort, love, forgiveness, and hope. For Thomas John, death is not the end, it is just the beginning. Our friends and relatives are still with us. They care for us. They watch over us. And, in times of particular need, they offer us their help."

Beauty, professional baseball, and homicide...Baltimore in the spring of 1897: the lovely and enigmatic young actress, Fanny Darlington, discovers a corpse sprawled across the back alley stage door of the Academy of Music. The victim, a large man dressed in spats and an expensive overcoat, has been bludgeoned in the head and shot. The reason for the two different forms of attack is unknown, and so is the motive for the killing, because the body is still wearing a gold stick pin and watch chain. Whatever this might be, it's not a robbery gone wrong. When Fanny is identified as a prime suspect, Frank Van Sant steps in to help. Manager of the famous Diamond Caf and a devoted fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Frank likes to imagine himself as a bit of an amateur detective. He'll need more than an amateur's skill though, as he's drawn into a bloody mystery interwoven with the desperate life of a runaway slave.Set against a punishing baseball season with the Dead Ball Era's brightest stars, John Thomas Everett takes us back to the turbulent city of Plug Ugly Ball with a follow-up novel that knocks one out of the park.
