A Biblicist View of Law and Gospel

A Biblicist View of Law and Gospel

Lester L Stephenson

"A Biblicist View of Law and Gospel treats a most controversial theological subject thoroughly and scripturally. It underscores the value of Old Testament Law as a gracious revealer of divine character and an expose of human depravity as prerequisite to the gospel. The work provides a helpful critique of the two extremes that have plagued Christendom legalism and antinomianism."-Gerald Priest, Ph.D. Former professor of historical theology, Detroit Baptist Theological SeminaryPaul told the Romans "the Law is holy and the commandment is holy and righteous and good." Yet four times in three epistles he wrote, "We are not under law but under grace." Christians read these seemingly conflicting statements and are easily confused. They wonder if anyone can understand how the law and the Old Testament relates to their faith. Some take the easy way out and all but ignore the Old Testament calling it legalism. They prefer to concentrate on and enjoy the magnificent grace of God that comes with salvation. This limits their understanding of the Scriptures and indeed, restricts spiritual growth. Confusion further abounds because just about every denomination has a different interpretation of the law and the relationship between the testaments.Lester Stephenson proposes a different approach rooted in Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17-18, "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished." Those two verses call for Christians to look anew at the law and the rest of the Old Testament. Not one part of the law or what the prophets wrote will pass away until Jesus has completely fulfilled it. Stephenson stresses that Christians must recognize the importance of the Bible that Jesus and the apostles used. Each time Jesus and the apostles used the phrase, "it is written" they were using an Old Testament passage to illustrate a New Testament principle. In A Biblicist View of Law and Gospel, Stephenson advocates a biblicist view based on careful Bible study to explain how Christians are to view the law and the way the testaments fit together as an inspired whole.

The author demonstrates to the layperson how he uses various means to advance his own spiritual growth. The means are available to everyone. It is not exhaustive and includes: systematic Bible study, recording quotes from gifted Christian authors' works, exploring contemporary and theological topics with Christian ministries, and keeping a spiritual journal. The author makes the point that although he had been an ardent churchgoer for years and involved in many religious activities, he had never experienced a genuine conversion until his heart was regenerated by the Holy Spirit. By documenting this turning point of his spiritual journey, he stressed that it is crucial for one to ask God to bring about an authentic change in one's life. Given that he had to juggle supporting a family, keeping a job, and finding time for spiritual devotion, he also shows his readers that by recording his day-to-day experiences one can discover how God works in one's life. He then uses such recordings to measure his spiritual progress--steps as well as "missteps"--and place them in a grid framed by the word of God.

There was no place like Brooklyn in the 1950s or a better view than the one from the roof of author Lester Alan Kalish's 5-story apartment building. The streets were playgrounds. Only a parent's call for dinner could interrupt the joys of childhood. But, as in all stories, life cannot always be this idyllic.Years later a mother's premonition and a father's cancer diagnosis would create a fear of dying and a fierce determination to avoid mirroring his parents' fates. Embarking on a journey to discover who he was, Kalish broke away from conventional wisdom that suggests one's destiny is predetermined by genetics.Twenty five years after his father's diagnosis a renewed awareness of life and death gave birth to a significant file, one that continued to expand with the latest cancer research. Fate had made one thing abundantly clear for Kalish: it takes the greater part of a lifetime to find what one is looking for.
