This twin study of Louis XIV of France and his father's one time collaborator, Cardinal Richelieu tells how these two important figures turned France into a global power and a global influence through their respective reforms to the country. Together they are two of the most important figures to have reigned in French history. Together in their own separate and unique ways they enacted policies that bequeathed a legacy that set the foundational principles and institutions that was to govern France and turn her into a successful country that enjoyed world-wide respect and affection. Taking into account new and recent archival evidence these two texts on Louis and Richelieu, respectively offer a fresh and new approach to the lives of these two monarchs as it were and key players in French history.

Louis I. Kahn: The Nordic Latitudes is a new and personal reading of the architecture, teachings, and legacy of Louis I. Kahn from Per Olaf Fjeld's perspective as a former student. The book explores Kahn's life and work, offering a unique take on one of the twentieth century's most important architects. Kahn's Nordic and European ties are emphasized in this study that also covers his early childhood in Estonia, his travels, and his relationships with other architects, including the Norwegian architect Arne Korsmo. The authors have gathered personal reflections, archival material, and other student work to offer insight into the wisdom that Kahn imparted to his students in his famous masterclass. Louis I. Kahn: The Nordic Latitudes addresses Kahn's legacy both personally and in terms of the profession, documents a research trip the University of Pennsylvania's Louis I. Kahn Collection, and confronts the affiliation of Kahn's work with postmodernism.

French playwright, novelist, activist, and journalist Louis Sébastien Mercier (1740–1814) passionately captured scenes of social injustice in pre-Revolutionary Paris in his prolific oeuvre but today remains an understudied writer. In this penetrating study—the first in English devoted to Mercier in decades—Michael Mulryan explores his unpublished writings and urban chronicles, Tableau de Paris (1781–88) and Le Nouveau Paris (1798), in which he identified the city as a microcosm of national societal problems, detailed the conditions of the laboring poor, encouraged educational reform, and confronted universal social ills. Mercier’s rich writings speak powerfully to the sociopolitical problems that continue to afflict us as political leaders manipulate public debate and encourage absolutist thinking, deepening social divides. An outcast for his polemical views during his lifetime, Mercier has been called the founder of modern urban discourse, and his work a precursor to investigative journalism. This sensitive study returns him to his rightful place among Enlightenment thinkers.

In 1928, Louis 'Louie' McBride was born into a life of grinding poverty and little future. But 'Louie' knew from a very early age that there was more to life than merely a continuation of what had gone before. He married the love of this life, Sally, and through sheer determination and persistence, he joined the great migration to the newly industrialized North and made a good life for himself and his family in New York. On retirement, he returned to South Carolina, where he continues to live with his dear wife. In the last 90 years of his life, many things have changed but in spite of the seismic political and social changes which have taken place in the United States of America, there are still too many reminders of how things used to be. This is the inspirational life of a man whose story spans the most critical time in American history and who has now finally found the peace, respect, and love he so richly deserves.

Fratino’s expressive style combines painting’s rich history with a sensibility that is unique to the present moment Since his critically acclaimed 2019 solo exhibition in New York, American painter Louis Fratino (born 1993) has been at the forefront of figurative painting’s international resurgence. This is the first major monograph for the artist, gathering more than 50 of his most important works to date. Although he has spoken of his admiration for modernist painters including Picasso and Marsden Hartley, Fratino's approach to the medium is highly personal, reconstructed from memories of his own fleeting perceptions. His figures radiate desire; whether poised in a moment of tranquility or entwined in a coital knot, he depicts them with a frankness that speaks to the intimacy of the artist’s tender gaze. For this publication, Fratino’s work is presented in a generously sized folio format inspired by 1930s avant-garde publications such as Minotaure and Verve, and its dust jacket features a new artwork by the artist.

Louis Vuitton: The Illustrated World of a Fashion Icon is an extraordinary illustrated biography of Louis Vuitton’s life, recounting his life and career and the birth of the Louis Vuitton brand, from the internationally renowned illustrator and author, Megan Hess. Louis Vuitton’s name is now synonymous with luxury, but the man behind the brand came from very humble beginnings, and his story is one of perseverance and vision: - Louis left his rural village at just 13 years old and took two years to walk to Paris, where he began learning the traditional craft of trunkmaking and packing. His particular skills in packing fashion eventually led to him becoming the personal trunkmaker for the stylish French empress. - He started his eponymous house in 1854 and quickly brought in the first of many innovations – the flat-top trunk, which became the must-have accessory in the golden age of travel. - While overcoming obstacles and achieving recognition in his lifetime, Louis also set up his son and grandson to take on the business with incredible success, bringing Louis Vuitton luggage to the world and developing further innovations, such as the unpickable lock and the iconic LV Monogram pattern. The brand’s expansion into bags was sparked by Coco Chanel ordering a custom handbag, and soon they were not just making innovative trunks for royalty and explorers but also handbags, loved by stars of stage and screen. - When the maison expanded into ready-to-wear under Marc Jacobs in the 2000s, the legacy of fashion and adventure was complete.

Louis de Niverville (1933–2019) was a painter and collagist. His experimental and thought-provoking art, often mislabelled as “surrealist,” defied simple categorization. The ninth of thirteen children, young Louis was sent to a sanatorium in Ottawa for treatment of spinal tuberculosis at age six. He remained there for four and a half years. This long-term confinement would become a major influence on his art. Hired as an illustrator by the CBC in the late 1950s, de Niverville quickly immersed himself in the burgeoning Toronto art scene. His work relied heavily on his dreams and daydreams, and explored aspects of the individual, culture and nature, and often featured surreal “inside-outside” spaces. At a time when Abstract Expressionism and its offshoots were dominant in the international art world, Louis’s early exhibitions in Toronto quickly seized the attention of respected art critics, and de Niverville was flagged as an artist to watch. This reputation plus a number of private commissions, including large-scale murals for Pearson International Airport and Spadina subway station, both in Toronto, helped thrust de Niverville to the forefront of the Toronto scene in the 1960s and 1970s.Edited by Thomas Miller—de Niverville’s partner of many decades and an artist in his own right—and international art dealer Philip Ottenbrite, Louis de Niverville: Pentimenti includes texts from renowned art critics and curators Tobi Bruce, Ihor Holubizky, and E.C. Woodley, which trace de Niverville’s rise in the Toronto scene, and which also provide critical art historical context to the depth and breadth of his unique practice. Heather Bell’s biographical piece on de Niverville’s childhood illuminates a practice seemingly born of childhood trauma and whimsy. Featuring more than 140 art reproductions and archival images, this is an in-depth examination of an artist who, in his unique portrayals of the individual, encouraged the exploration of the universal.
Louis Sébastien Mercier, 'Comment fonder la morale du peuple? Traité d'éducation pour l'avènement d'une société nouvelle'
How might Republican France create the homme nouveau, or the ideal citizen, upon which the nascent republic placed its hopes? This is the question that Louis S bastien Mercier (1740-1814) asks in this 1801 treatise on moral education, which has remained unedited until the present day. In this treatise, the polymath, known for his urban chronicles as well as his political engagement during the Revolution, tackles a question that pervades revolutionary discourse beginning in 1789: how can institutions be reformed in such a way that they can sow the seeds for the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity in the heart of every citizen? His moral philosophy, such as it is presented in this text, was largely inspired by German critical philosophy and Kant's works in particular, which Mercier helped to make more widely known in France. This newly edited manuscript is thus particularly important for an understanding of both the author's intellectual trajectory and the history of ideas in the long eighteenth century. Written at the beginning of the Consulate during Napoleon's rise to power, this text offers scholars a retrospective look at the social and political upheaval that marked the last decades of the ancien r gime and the revolutionary period. Its content reflects both Mercier's personal experiences as a survivor of the Terror and the philosophical debates of his time.
Louis-René des Forêts and Inner Autobiography
Louis-Ren des For ts (1916-2000) devoted the last twenty-five years of his writing life to an innovative practice of autobiography, spanning poetry and fragmentary prose, and culminating in the key works Po mes de Samuel Wood (1987), Ostinato (1997) and the posthumously published Pas pas jusqu'au dernier (2001). Ian Maclachlan's study is the first to take this innovation in life-writing as its principal focus and to draw out the wider resonances of des For ts's distinctive project for the theory and practice of autobiography. Des For ts's unusual traversal of genres, formal experimentation, and sparseness of biographical detail give rise to a new mode of abstract, impersonal autobiographical writing. Echoing des For ts's own, earlier use of the term autobiographie int rieure in relation to his short-story collection La Chambre des enfants (1960), as well as his friend Georges Bataille's idiosyncratic notion of exp rience int rieure, this novel style of life-writing is explored here under the rubric of 'inner autobiography'.Ian Maclachlan is Professor of French Literature and Fellow of Merton College, University of Oxford.
