The Alabama Knights of Pythias of North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia
Marilyn T. Peebles
University Press of America
2012
sidottu
The Knights of Pythias fraternal organization was founded in 1865 by an Act of Congress. When African American men were denied membership, they created their own organization in Vicksburg, MS, in 1880. Its founder, Thomas Stringer, believed that fraternal organizations could provide the black community with business networks, economic safety nets, and political experience at a time when Jim Crow laws were being constructed all around them. In Birmingham, Alabama, these Pythians became the cornerstone of an African American business community that included the first black-owned and operated bank in the state. They provided burial, life, and disability insurance for members and became a source of civic pride and racial solidarity. When their right to exist was challenged, they took the case to the Supreme Court in 1912 and won. This strategy would be used decades later in Brown v. Board of Education.

This new Pocket Guide to Lung Cancer addresses the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of lung cancer by oncology nurses. The text provides resources and information on understanding lung cancer, standard treatment modalities, symptom management, evidence-based guidelines, and clinical trials.
In the United States, lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. Even more devastating is its five-year survival rate of only 15.8%. Despite these dismal facts, lung cancer receives little national attention and research and funding for lung cancer lags behind other cancers. The intent of Contemporary Issues in Lung Cancer: A Nursing Perspective Second Edition is to provide oncology nurses and healthcare professionals with in-depth information on the issues that surround this disease, so that they might impact both education and research and provide better care for their patients.

Take a nostalgic tour of Tuckerton, New Jersey, a seaport town with history spanning back to the 1700s. Over 280 photos of black and white and hand-tinted postcards and memorabilia illustrate the town's history, including splendid buildings present and long gone, the 850-foot Transatlantic wireless radio tower erected in 1912, and the bone-jarring antics that took place at the Tuckerton and Manahawkin automobile racetracks. Explore the Four Corners, Main Street, the Tuckerton Railroad, and Lake Pohatcong. Local residents fill in the details of Tuckerton's history and people with tales as colorful as the postcards, including a story of the local shipyard owner who set up chairs across the creek from the launch point and invited folks from out of town to witness the boat launch in front row seats, where the unsuspecting tourists got soaked. For postcard collectors, historians, and fans of a good yarn, this book will be a wonderful addition to the library.

Media portrayals and diagnostic criteria convey an image of an addicted person as someone whose deficient coping skills and severely compromised functioning are readily apparent. Yet addictions remain some of the most frequently missed diagnoses in health and mental health care settings. This occurs, in large part, because most people with addictions do not fit the stereotype. In the context of psychotherapy, the typical patient with an addiction will present depression, anxiety, marital problems or a general sense that life is not working. This book addresses how addictions can be recognized more often and accurately assessed in the context of psychotherapy. Along with learning about the standard assessment instruments, the reader is introduced to methods for asking the appropriate questions and listening to the clinical dialogue for signs of a undisclosed addiction. This book provides a great deal of knowledge about addictions and their assessment in a way that is relevant to clinical practice.

Working with Trauma: Lessons from Bion and Lacan by Marilyn Charles takes concepts from the psychoanalytic literature and translates them into user-friendly language. In this book, Charles focuses on clinical work with more severely disturbed patients, for whom trauma has impeded their psychosocial development. Introducing ideas from Bion and Lacan, such as “empty speech” and “attacks on linking,” she shows the reader their clinical utility. Her use of clinical moments, rather than more lengthy vignettes, invites readers to recognize that type of dilemma and imagine how they might use the concept in their own work.
