Unlike most of the Naval Institute’s oral histories, which contain the recollections of seagoing line officers, this memoir is from a skilled artist who painted the portraits of many of the line officers. In addition to providing interesting anecdotes about the artistic process, Commander Murray also supplied candid insights into the personalities of the individuals. For instance, in painting Admiral William Halsey and Admiral Thomas Kinkaid, Murray rekindled their acrimonious feelings about the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Many of the other top naval leaders of World War II were the subjects of Murray’s brush: Chester Nimitz, William Leahy, Ernest King, James Forrestal, Marc Mitscher, Arleigh Burke, Thomas Sprague, Jonas Ingram, Arthur Radford, Charles McMorris, Richmond Kelly Turner, and Raymond Spruance. More recent leaders included Secretary of the Navy Thomas Gates and CNO Admiral Elmo Zumwalt. Copies of the Murray portraits of these individuals are included in the volume so the reader can compare the artist’s verbal descriptions with the images he created. In addition, Murray talked about his role as a combat artist, particularly in connection with the Allied invasion of southern France in August 1944.

This book, a volume in the Natural History Series by the Royal Society of South Australia, explores the natural history of the Coorong, Lower Lakes, and Murray Mouth (Yarluwar-Ruwe) region of South Australia (the CLLMM), a region that has been listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.The book is divided into four main themes: a historical overview of the region; its physical-chemical nature; its biological systems; and its management, resource use and conservation. The effects of large-scale anthropogenic change, climate change, global warming and sea level changes are discussed from multiple perspectives, as are the effects of acid sulfate soils and the overall consequences of the Millennium Drought on the CLLMM's water quality, biological life and food web.The discussion includes information from Ngarrindjeri leaders about the history and culture of the Ngarrindjeri people, the traditional owners of the region's land and waters. The book concludes by establishing the vision and framework required for the important and increasing role that the Ngarrindjeri Nation will play in the shared long-term management of the region.

This book explores the issue of salinization in the context of contemporary conflicts about irrigation, water, and the environment in Australia, considering the Murray-Darling Basin in particular. It provides an environmental and social history charting the transformation of rural communities in the basin through the salinization of soils and water. Focusing on the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation district in the southwest of the Murray-Darling basin – the largest irrigation district in Australia – it explores the history of state-directed, large-scale engineering in the district, where the environment has been altered dramatically to facilitate white agricultural settlement inland. Changes to the landscape led to extensive salinization, however – a significant environmental threat in Australia. This book traces the impact of these changes on rural communities, taking a ‘bottom-up’ approach, highlighting the connections between environmental, social, and political change. It provides animportant reflection on the importance of environmental history for facing the challenges posed by anthropogenic climate change.
