This extraordinary book celebrates this luminous jewel of a church which once again welcomes the Greek Orthodox faithful, serves as a memorial to all those who tragically lost their lives on 9/11, and provides a place of quiet reflection open to all. The original Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1892 and sat at the foot of the World Trade Center in New York City. Tragically, the church was completely destroyed in the collapse of Tower Two during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Determined to rebuild, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese selected world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava to recreate the church near the original site. Using marble from the same quarries as the Parthenon, Calatrava developed his plan from a wealth of Byzantine precedents for the church’s structure, including the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The Shrine’s iconographic program was created by Bishop Joachim of Amissos (John A. Cotsonis) and brought to realization by the celebrated iconographer, Fr. Loukas of the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos. It is the only church in the United States whose complete iconography is painted by an Athonite monk. This luxurious volume, rich with stunning photography, is a comprehensive overview of the history, construction and iconography of the Shrine.
Stories of giving and helping Saint Nicholas is the delightful biography of a man who has become a legend, celebrating the wonder and kindness within the Christmas spirit and speaking to children of all ages. Originally published in German as Geschichten vom Schenken und Helfen des Sankt Nikolaus (9th, ed., Freies Geistesleben, 2007).

Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) was one of the most illustrious figures of the fifteenth century --a man whose imagination spanned the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance to point the way to modernity. Theologian, philosopher, canon lawyer, reformer, church statesman, and cardinal, Cusanus' ideas of learned ignorance and the coincidence of opposites still attract attention today across a wide variety of disciplines. However, there is no one book in the marketplace that explains to a general audience all the different facets of this Renaissance man. This book, which might be considered "Nicholas of Cusa 101," offers separate chapters for the non-specialist introducing the vocabulary, ideas, and works of Nicholas of Cusa on a wide variety of topics. The book also provides a guide to his works in Latin, English, and other languages; all the secondary literature on each topic treated; a glossary of Cusan terms and ideas; and a guide to Cusan societies, sites, libraries, and museums.

The Works of Nicholas Tarling on Southeast Asia
Routledge

The collection’s editor writes:Southeast Asian history and historiography would be greatly handicapped if the writings of Nicholas Tarling were removed from the increasingly expanding literature. The reading list has increased several folds since the early 1950s when Southeast Asian history was beginning to emerge as a serious area of scholarly research and writing. Nonetheless the works of the pioneering batch of scholars have remained relevant more than half a century since their publications. These books and articles have attained ‘classic’ status, never failing to be listed in students’ ‘required reading lists’.Peter Nicholas Tarling (b. 1931), currently emeritus professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, figured among those whose works possessed a long shelflife. By mid-2009, the indefatigable Tarling had authored or edited close to forty books and more than ninety scholarly journal articles. By critically scrutinizing and analysing British imperial designs on the region, Tarling has contributed significantly to the historiography of Southeast Asia as Great Britain was a major player, if not the dalang (puppeteer) of events and developments on the geopolitical stage.Tarling’s corpus of works, specifically his papers published in scholarly journals, is an essential guide to all those seeking to understand the politics and history of Southeast Asia.
