Adventures in Feminist Dramaturgy

Adventures in Feminist Dramaturgy

Laura Hope; Philippa Kelly

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2026
sidottu
In their lively invocation of a feminist dramaturgy that can lead to innovative and challenging directions in modern theatre-making, Laura Hope and Philippa Kelly make use of first-hand interviews with directors, actors, designers, and critics, as well as their own experiences in the theatre, to open up feminist dramaturgy as a field of enquiry and performance possibility. The authors begin by discussing what happens when a dramaturg's performance strategies are vastly different from what a director envisions. This discussion moves naturally to Hope and Kelly's analysis of canonical plays they hope to re-think in terms of gender at the same time that they resist the implication that a feminist perspective is a prescription for a political and social agenda. Casting a critical eye on "mainstream" approaches to classical plays, the authors revisit casting practices, editing philosophies, and directorial concepts that provide thin, stereotypical depictions of male and female characters, arguing for closer textual and cultural analyses of misguided ventures such as the Lysistrata Project. Their commentary on appeals to audience involvement highlights the difficulty of challenging audience preconceptions and the possibilities for expanding audience reception, while the counterproductive rigidity with which organizations like the Beckett estate resist new approaches to theatrical production are exposed in a discussion of feminist dramaturgy's potential to reinvigorate a play like Waiting for Godot. Adventures in Dramaturgy concludes with the authors' personal journey to forge new directions within a specific theatre company and in the professional world at large.

Unsettled times can arise from a variety of causes, including ones that are environmental, climatic, economic, social or political in nature. They can result in citizens' loss of homes and possessions, jobs, health or mobility. Citizens move from above the level of consumption adequacy, where their behaviors reflect long-term and higher-order needs, to below the level of consumption adequacy, where they are forced into a short-term focus on simple existence. In parallel, services provided by various organizations - utilities, transportation, medical, maintenance, housing, education, broadcasting, national state and local governments - may become ineffective or unavailable under such conditions. This book explores the effect of unsettled times on spatial service systems. It describes the scope and breadth of the problem as well as providing solutions by offering original insights from managers of service organizations (especially public services), policy-makers and service system researchers and students. The book briefly introduces the related concepts of consumption adequacy and spatial service systems. The impact of these issues for spatial service systems is analyzed, implications discussed, the lessons to be learned and conclusions will be drawn on the actions needed to build spatial service system resilience for future occurrences. The potential for this book is interdisciplinary, and could be relevant not only for business/management courses, but also in the areas of public administration and also economic geography.

The surge of interest in psychological therapies in GP settings makes this book timely and important for the development of this field in the 21st century. As well as the suggested syllabus for training counsellors and psychotherapists (agreed by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Forum for Primary Care), the book deals with much wider issues. Chapters deal with practitioner issues - both student and professional - management issues, and the provision of supervision and mentoring for the new counsellor as well as planning Continuous Professional Development. Chapters dealing with the history of the remarkable rise in these services help set the context of the rapid development of primary care counselling. The term 'primary care counselling' denotes the context of primary care within which psychological therapies take place and encompasses practitioners from a wide variety of therapeutic traditions. The emphasis throughout is on thorough going preparation of the new counsellor/therapist to meet the proper counselling standards required in primary care practice. It will be of value to students, course providers, counselling practice managers, supervisors as well as those who commission services and general practice doctors.

Why is it that some companies/brands succeed with women and others don't? In sectors as valuable as telecoms, financial services, consumer electronics, cars, technology, gaming and utilities, women consistently report low levels of interest, and demonstrate lower levels of engagement than their male counterparts. Can companies really afford to miss out like this? Successful modern-day companies approach the male and female opportunity as equally lucrative and exciting. They involve and include feminine interests in the development of their products, services, brands and marketing to ensure they appeal to the entire mainstream audience rather than just one half of it. This book reveals why it is that some companies succeed with women and others don't. It outlines the key determinants that make up brands which appeal to both men and women, and the opportunities that presents.
Close Encounters of the Microbial Kind

Close Encounters of the Microbial Kind

Microbes – can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Increasingly, we’re finding out that our microbiota (the microbes that live on us) are essential for our wellbeing – they provide us with nutrients and vitamins and play a key role in developing our immune system. On the other hand, they are responsible for a great deal of misery, as they are major causes of death and debility around the world. As well as our own microbiota turning against us, there are lots of other microbes out in the wider world that can seriously damage, or even kill, those they infect. The current pandemic of COVID-19 shows the devastating effect that an infectious disease can have – our lives have been turned upside down.If you live in a developed country, you’re not likely to get killer diseases such as ebola and cholera, but you do have a high chance of catching other infections that can have a significant impact on your wellbeing. This book focuses on thoseinfections you’re most likely to go down with, and supplies the answers to the following questions about them:Which infectious diseases are we likely to come across? How common are they? What microbes cause them? What happens to our bodies during an infection? How are the resulting illnesses treated? How can we avoid getting them? This book covers nearly 60 infectious diseases that people living in developed countries are likely to experience at some point during their life. It also has an introductory chapter that describes, in everyday language, the basic principles of microbiology and infectious diseases. Each chapter is lavishly illustrated, has interesting, relevant inserts, and provides a list of web-accessible suggestions for further reading.
The 'Socially Networked' Newsroom

The 'Socially Networked' Newsroom

This book identifies discourses of digital communication through observations of online and offline newsroom interactions, interviews, and text analysis to provide insights into how journalists use digital technologies in story production and the impact this has on their journalism practice. Through discursive analysis of 300 hours of video-ethnographic material gathered in three newsrooms, the authors apply groundbreaking qualitative methodological approaches in unravelling the complex interactions of journalists. Incorporating a Social Media Critical Discourse Studies paradigm to journalism studies, they detail ways in which new technologies have affected both daily newsroom operations and the identities of newsworkers. Rare empirical insights are offered that enable a clearer understanding of the changing media landscape, the newsroom power relationships that emerge and the discourses surrounding the use of digital technologies that have become normalised in journalistic ‘talk’. The book clearly demonstrates how the techno-discursive architecture of the internet has not only impacted the production and style of news, but has also led to an acceleration of work intensification that pushes the boundaries of journalism practice and journalist identity. It will appeal to those interested in the workings of the contemporary news media and news discourse, and who are concerned about the future of news production.
The Divine Names

The Divine Names

?Afif al-Din al-Tilimsani; Philippa Byrne

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PRESS
2025
pokkari
A Sufi scholar's philosophical interpretation of the names of God The Divine Names is a philosophically sophisticated commentary on the names of God. Penned by the seventh-/thirteenth-century North African scholar and Sufi poet ?Afif al-Din al-Tilimsani, The Divine Names expounds upon the one hundred and forty-six names of God that appear in the Qur?an, including The All-Merciful, The Powerful, The First, and The Last. In his treatment of each divine name, al-Tilimsani synthesizes and compares the views of three influential earlier authors, al-Bayhaqi, al-Ghazali, and Ibn Barrajan. Al-Tilimsani famously described his two teachers Ibn al-?Arabi and al-Qunawi as a "philosophizing mystic" and a "mysticizing philosopher," respectively. Picking up their mantle, al-Tilimsani merges mysticism and philosophy, combining the tenets of Akbari Sufism with the technical language of Aristotelian, Neoplatonic, and Avicennan philosophy as he explains his logic in a rigorous and concise way. Unlike Ibn al-?Arabi, his overarching concern is not to examine the names as correspondences between God and creation, but to demonstrate how the names overlap at every level of cosmic existence. The Divine Names shows how a broad range of competing theological and philosophical interpretations can all contain elements of the truth. An English-only edition.
