Leo Fender: The Quiet Giant Heard Around the World

Leo Fender: The Quiet Giant Heard Around the World

Phyllis Fender; Randall Bell

Occasionally, the world produces one of those rare thinkers that alter the course of history. Disney reinvented entertainment, Einstein revolutionized science, Edison lit up our lives with the light bulb, Bell got the world talking with the telephone ... and Fender revolutionized music. If you think about it, Leo Fender has influenced every person on earth today - at least everyone who has ever heard a song. Guitar Player Magazine declared that Clarence Leo Fender is the father of the solid body guitar. Not only did he invent it, but Leo's guitars were used by everyone from Elvis Presley, to Eric Clapton and from Jimmy Page to Jimmy Hendrix. Indeed, Rolling Stone Magazine published a list of the world's top 100 guitarists, and 90 of them used one of Leo's guitars on stage, and the others used guitars that copied Leo's inventions and concepts. Leo Fender was shy, had one glass eye, and was nearly deaf. Yet, from the small town of Fullerton, California, he built an iconic worldwide empire that is worshiped by the rock stars themselves. The highest price ever spent for music memorabilia was not for Michael Jackson's glove, original Beatles' handwritten lyrics or even Elvis' killer pantsuit. It was for a Fender Stratocaster, which sold for a staggering $2.7 million. Written by the wife of the late Leo Fender, for the very first time, this book provides a rare look into the wonderful mind and world of this quiet genius.

Phyllis Neal Grashel's spent her early childhood in a big two-story farmhouse where the matriach, Granny Neal, had a room with a fireplace on her side of a hallway, Phyllis and her parents lived on the other side. and Aunt Dole and Uncle Courtland lived upstairs. That's the way families were then - they took care of the elders, and often three generations lived in one house. Playing in the woods with cousins, feeding chickens and farm animals, and attending church were all part of life in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Religion and education played a major role in the family, but, Phyllis was denied access to college because she was "a girl." Determination prevailed; Phyllis did get her degree, with honors, at age 48.

The Dire Wolf Alliance: A Native American Saga
"Go where?" Ping asked Chebucto. "You've been banished twice. You have nowhere to go." Growing up, no matter the era or place, can be terrifying. Chebucto understood what the medicine man told him to do, but couldn't do it himself on the ancient northeastern coast of North America. Meanwhile, adults in a local group called the Dire Wolf Alliance, tried to rescue and find homes for widows and orphans traumatized by the violent Death Runners who bludgeoned their way through Zana. The story, told by her spirits Baasee' and Grandfather Kwaiikit, helps Deloo, the protagonist of Phyllis Fast's two earlier books, 'Half-Bead of Fundy' and 'Midnight Trauma', come to grips with her own recent widowhood.

Women of Southie tells the story of six women, who grew up in and, in most cases, still live in their beloved town of South Boston, a place sadly and most notably recognized as the home of James “Whitey” Bulger, the organized crime boss captured in 2011 after 16 years on the run, and sentenced in 2013 to life in prison for 11 murders. But while Bulger might have been ruling the town with an iron fist, as depicted by Johnny Depp, in “Black Mass,” what the town ought to have been recognized for are the far braver women who ruled their own lives and their families with equally strong but far more beneficial hands. Six of these women are depicted in this book, each of whom faced hurdles more frightening than mobsters. Death of loved ones, suicide, murder, addiction, abuse, post traumatic stress disorder are some of the demons they faced. Yet, none of these women ever backed down from an important fight, each one emerging, on the pages of this book as a shining light of what love and courage and an indomitable spirit can accomplish. The stories of these women, whose ages range from 40-67, are filled with honest details, some heartbreaking but all ultimately courageous and inspirational. Talking always honestly, about their children, their men, their losses, and their successes, they are shining examples that, in today’s world, it is the words of strong women that offer the antidote to loss and pain.

Angel Morgan has served 25 years of a life sentence. This is the story of her journey from resentment of "the system" to recognition that God has a purpose for her life. Dr. Rosie Klein, Forensic Psychologist, was appointed to evaluate 21- year-old Angel for competency to stand trial on four counts of murder. Angel subsequently agreed to a plea deal in exchange for her testimony against the shooters she was with during the commission of the crimes. The plea deal, which got her life in prison, didn't seem like much of a "deal" to Dr. Klein. She wonders, to this day, if a jury trial might not have been a better choice for Angel. Would her abuse as a child have influenced the jurors? Would her only crime have been judged as "guilt by association? "Their relationship has continued to develop through emails, letters, phone calls, and prison visits. And now, Angel wants her friend to tell her story. It is hoped the reader will come to understand how and why some people choose the wrong path.
