Meadows Taylor, nincteenth-century British administrator worked in India as a political agent from 1824-1860. His works, published between 1839 and 1878, belong to the period of Anglo-Indian literature when popular fiction reflected the beliefs of British rule in India. A work of historical fiction set amidst the time of the Battle of Plassey in 1757 that follows the fortunes of its protagonist, Ralph Darnell, is reflected in this novel published in 1865. It also examines Meadows Taylor's connection between British conceptions of India and its people and the historical development of British rule in India. All his works present Indian customs vividly and strongly, and are characterised on themes such as interracial marriage, race relations and Indian religious practices. Other themes include his use of Victorian concepts of domesticity in Indian settings, his presentation of strongly idealised Indian characters, and his frequent use as the subject matter of ""pre-colonial"" Indian history.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of the great minds of the mid-nineteenth century. His thoughts and views led the Transcendentalist movement, and his writings?especially Self-Reliance?taught people to ?trust thyself” and see how their self-worth was more important than anything else. Emerson on Self-Reliance is a wonderful collection of writings that will teach not only how to have a better perception of the world, but also how you are capable of having a better perception of yourself. ?To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men?that is genius.” With quotes and excerpts from Emerson’s poems, essays, and other writings, Emerson on Self-Reliance will not only open your eyes to the brilliant mind that he was, but hopefully help you look inside to see how great you really are and, as stated before, to ?trust thyself.”
Ralph Strode, Obligationes

Ralph Strode studied and taught at Merton College Oxford in the 1350s and ’60s. Later, he lived in London near Geoffrey Chaucer, who dedicated his poem Troilus and Criseyde to “philosophical Strode”. While in Oxford, Strode wrote six treatises on logic, including one on obligationes, a unique logical genre probably designed to train students in logical inference. Obligationes are logical disputations between an Opponent, who poses a proposition, usually false, against a background scenario, and a Respondent who, having accepted the Opponent’s proposal, must respond by granting, denying or doubting the propositions put forward by the Opponent in accordance with certain rules. Various rival sets of rules were proposed. Strode’s treatise argues against three such theories including Swyneshed’s and Dumbleton’s, and develops Walter Burley’s theory further. Jennifer Ashworth began her edition of Strode’s Obligationes in the 1980s, and began an English translation late in life, but was unable to finish the work before her death in 2024. Stephen Read has completed the translation, and added a history of theories of obligationes and the place of Strode’s theory in it. Apart from a doctoral dissertation presenting Strode’s Consequences, it will be the first of Strode’s treatises to appear in print.
