Crown ethers and calixarenes - the latter ones discovered only recently - are powerful complexing ligands for alkali and alkaline earth metals. This led to their immediate and wide-spread application in biosciences. This book is exclusively devoted to the very promising applications of these compounds in analytical chemistry. It focusses on solvent extraction, chromatography, spectroscopy and electroanalytical methods.

This English translation of my book "PribliZenie Funkcir Mnogih Peremennyh i Teoremy Vlozel1iya" is identical in content with the Rus- sian original, published by "Nauka" in 1969. However, I have corrected a number of errors. I am grateful to the publishing house Springer-Verlag for making my book available to mathematicians who do not know Russian. I am also especially grateful to the translator, Professor John M. Dan- skin, who has fulfilled his task with painstaking care. In doing so he has showed high qualifications both as a mathematician and as a translator of Russian, which is considered by many to be a very difficult language. The discussion in this book is restricted, for the most part, to func- tions everywhere defined in n-dimensional space. The study of these questions for functions given on bounded regions requires new methods. In. connection with this I note that a new book, "Integral Represen- tations of Functions and Imbedding Theorems", by O. V. Besov, V. P. Il'in, and myself, has just (May 1975) been published, by the publishing house "Nauka", in Moscow. Moscow, U.S.S.R., May 1975 S. M. Nikol'skir Translator's Note I am very grateful to Professor Nikol'skir, whose knowledge of English, which is considered by many to be a very difficult language, is excellent, for much help in achieving a correct translation of his book. And I join Professor Nikol'skir in thanking Springer-Verlag. The editing problem was considerable, and the typographical problem formidable.

Technical improvements over the past twenty years have made endos copy the procedure of choice for examination of the hollow organs of the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts. The development of electro surgical techniques, laser technology, injection therapy, and a wide variety of other modalities now allow the endoscopist to treat many problems that in the past required open surgery. The simultaneous development of transcutaneous abdominal sonography has had an equally dramatic impact on the practice of gastrointestinal and geni tourinary surgery. The marriage of these proven technologies, known as endoscopic sonography, provides an exciting new modality that promises to further revolutionize the diagnosis and management of many intraabdominal diseases. Endoscopic sonography opens new frontiers by overcoming the primary limitations of its parent technologies. Fiberoptic endoscopy is limited by the inability to see beyond the luminal surface, this is particularly important when considering neoplastic disease because depth of wall invasion is a key factor in determining treatment. The limiting factor in transcutaneous sonography is the distance between the transducer and the target organ. With endoscopic sonography, the transducer is placed in close proximity to the target organ. This allows the use of high frequency waves (greater than 5 MHz), which provide better tissue resolution and eliminates the image distortion caused by overlying structures.

The book is the outcome of a study for exploration the role of education in motivating and empowering young people to participate in community development activities in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. It also discusses the current practices of youth work in community development. Problems faced by the students and young people in participating community development works have also been discussed briefly. The book is an attempt to bridge the gap between education system, youth empowerment and community development activities in Bangladeshi context.

This volume of the series gives an overview on Rigid Polymer Networks written by two reputed experts in the field. A broad range of densely-branched, highly-crosslinked aromatic networks and gels of increasing rigidity are discussed, with special emphasis on aromatic rigid liquid-crystal polymer networks. The synthetic procedures to create the networks are briefly described and extensively referenced. Features of one-step and two-step rigid networks in their pre-gel and post-gel states are discussed. Some first steps are then taken in the theoretical treatment of LCP networks with long aromatic segments of decreasing stiffness. The current state of theory dealing with the broader class of highly-crosslinked rigid aromatic networks and gels is finally mentioned.
