Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984), an accomplished writer and director of television westerns, did not attract media attention until the release of his second feature-length film, the award-winning Ride the High Country. Peckinpah revealed in early interviews his deep knowledge of film history, an uncompromising aesthetic, and an intolerance for any crew members who did not share his capacity for hard work. As his career progressed, he began having increasingly difficult times with producers who did not share his vision. His problems with them emerge as a major focus of his interviews. Sam Peckinpah: Interviews features the combustible director discussing his best-known films, including the gory western The Wild Bunch, the unsettling and controversial Straw Dogs (which Pauline Kael described as ""the first American film that is a fascist work of art""), and the crime thriller The Getaway. In these conversations, Peckinpah's candor--about himself, filmmaking, studios, male/female relations, violence, and contemporary politics--provides a thoughtful portrait of a polarizing filmmaker. Kevin J. Hayes is professor of English at the University of Central Oklahoma. His previous books include Poe and the Printed Word, Folklore and Book Culture, and An American Cycling Odyssey, 1887, among others. He edited Charlie Chaplin: Interviews and Conversations with Jack Kerouac, both from University Press of Mississippi.

Sam Houston and His Republic

Let's start with the facts. This was the first biography of Sam Houston. It was published in 1846, just months after Texas entered the union and Houston took his seat in the United States Senate. It instantly became the go-to source for facts on his life and has provided much source material for nearly every Sam Houston biography since written. It's fair to say that a good deal of what the average Texan knows about Sam Houston originated within these pages. In 1846 there was speculation far and wide that Old Sam would run for President of the United States. The story goes that Dr. Ashbel Smith, who was pushing Houston to run, convinced him to hire a biographer in order to get his life story before the public, making this the father of a genre: the presidential candidate book.Sam Houston and His Republic was controversial from the day it rolled off the presses in 1846. Former Vice President David G. Burnet was a Tasmanian devil of indignation. Former President Lamar couldn't even get past the title, saying, "Houston and his Republic. HIS republic That is true; for I can regard Texas as little more than the Big Drunk's big ranch " So this is not only a biography, it is something of a historical artifact. There is much between the lines. In case you are wondering why Old Glory garnishes the cover instead of the Lone Star banner, it's to make the point that Sam Houston wish for his republic was always that it should become a state

This rhyming chapter book is CharLene Seay's first offering. Ocean currents pushed the large hermit crabs, Sam and Flam, onto the shore where they met. There Bob the Bucket Man found and captured them and delivered them to the Superstore. Fortunately a woman chose them from the large cage full of hermit crabs in the store and drove them home, with memorable adventures along the way. She'd created a crabarium in a 60-gallon glass tank. It held everything a hermit crab could want, including six inches of sand substrate for burrowing and a variety of climbing-apparatus items. She had done a lot of research and had provided the needed humidity, warmth, water bowls for the two kinds of water needed, a food bowl, fresh vegetables and fruits and protein sources, and an overstuffed chair and reading lamp for her. You can follow along on all of Sam and Flam's harrowing adventures and meet their friends throughout this exciting tale. You'll learn a great deal about hermit crabs, their claws and shells, their habits, and their care along the way.
Sam: A Mundane Love Affair Between Two Men
In an apartment with bars and a view of the backside of a fast food joint, Sam was written as an exploration of the inner tension between the common and the unusual.Within the hyperbolic depiction of a modern relationship between "a defect of the city" and a "sparrow who suffered simplicity of heart," the two men followed in this book unfold within a classic, yet tragic, love story. In a series of 125 poems, Sam is revealed through the lens of an invisible narrator and is written in such a way that the reader has access to the inner states of the two men throughout its entirety.
Sam Gilliam - Existed Existing
The latest paintings and sculptures from acclaimed color-field veteran Sam Gilliam Including paintings, sculpture and works on paper, this book documents new works by DC-based color-field painter Sam Gilliam (born 1933). A new interview with the artist brings insight into his life and practice, as well as the experience of making this body of work, which represents an aesthetic shift from Gilliam’s canonical “drape” paintings. Published for the artist’s inaugural 2020 exhibition at Pace Gallery, in advance of the artist’s solo exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in spring 2022—which will be Gilliam’s first retrospective in the US in over 15 years—the book also includes new scholarship by Courtney J. Martin and Fred Moten.
Sam Gilliam: The Last Five Years
Late works from the abstract painter devoted to pictorial disruption and vivacious color work DC-based painter Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) paved a distinct course through abstraction by way of tireless formal, material and tonal experimentation. During the late 1960s, Gilliam advanced the processes and aesthetics employed by the Color Field painters while radically disrupting the Greenbergian ideal of the contained picture plane. This robust period of output yielded his canonical Beveled-edge and Drape series, which he spent decades elaborating upon. Sam Gilliam: The Last Five Years presents a suite of works created by the late artist in the final years of his life, encompassing arresting variations on his iconic tondos, drapes and beveled-edge paintings. Replete with photographs and foldouts as well as an essay by acclaimed art historian Lowery Stokes Sims, this volume offers an all-encompassing look at Gilliam’s dynamic, vibrant compositions.

The author wrote this book in 1982 to give his students a training manual to supplement their pursuit of the martial arts. This book served as a prototype for his training manuals which go from Orange Belt to 10th Degree Black Belt. It is a progression which builds from one level to the next. This revised edition of Sam Pai Kenpo is being released for historical purposes. Our system has gone through many revisions since I began in February 1966. When I started, there were no names for the self-defense techniques. The instructor just had to call out a right punch or push, and the student at that level would respond with the appropriate technique. This book follows the class protocol step by step, so it will feel like you are attending an actual class in the Dojo. Of course, a book can only take you so far and you are encouraged to find a qualified Kenpo instructor and attend their school for further instruction.
