Born in Manchester, England, in 1964, Sarah Michelson has lived and worked in New York since 1991, where she has become a fixture of the downtown dance community. Her works are known for their athleticism, rigor, beauty and attention to architectural space. Her choreography, she has written, "risks rejection" and "denies safety"; deliberately difficult, it inspires both adoration and debate. This book--featuring original essays, an interview with Michelson and a cultural history of her oeuvre written by her peers--explores the concepts and content of the choreographer's work, bringing it vividly to life.
The most comprehensive publication to date on Sarah Cain’s exuberant paintings and installations Los Angeles-based painter Sarah Cain (born 1979) works on canvases of all sizes, often modifying them by cutting and braiding, painting on all sides and installing the canvas with the back of the painting facing the viewer. She also paints on other surfaces, including interior and exterior walls, floors, furniture and dollar bills. Cain's process often involves altering and disfiguring a composition until the original image is no longer recognizable. Her process of creation and destruction frequently includes found objects and is steeped in the history of painting and feminist art practices. Cain's work is a challenge to the patriarchal hierarchies of painting. "Almost everything about Cain's paintings—their speed, their brashness, their noodling compositions, their splashes and spray-painted scribbles, their tacky accouterments, their sense of absurdity—seems to undermine the gravitas that large-scale painting traditionally projects," wrote Jonathan Griffin, in the New York Times. Sarah Cain: Enter the Center features new writings and previously unpublished photographs and documentation of dozens of artworks with a focus on the last decade of Cain's exuberant and unique paintings and installations.

How Oppenheimer’s complex artworks break down barriers between art, audience and architecture This publication documents the four interactive artworks by New York–based artist Sarah Oppenheimer (born 1972) created for the Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College in the context of her greater artistic oeuvre. Printed in five color with foil stamping, with striking reproductions and contributions by Tracy L. Adler, Suzanne Keen, Sarah Oppenheimer and Seph Rodney, the book explores the artist’s multifaceted approach to empathy, agency, audience and cocreation, among many other themes in her work. Oppenheimer considers the space of the museum as a site of experimentation, where visitors experience the curiosity and joy of transforming the artworks themselves. In Oppenheimer’s words, “You have to enter the temporal network in order for the work to exist.”
Commemorating Sarah Sze’s new permanent site-specific commission at Storm King Art Center Published to contextualize Sarah Sze’s (born 1969) outdoor work Fallen Sky and the accompanying installation Fifth Season at Storm King Art Center, this book includes an overview of the work in relation to Sze's larger practice. Also included is a discussion between Sze and artist Katharina Grosse to discuss Fallen Sky and thematic parallels in their respective work. Eight contributing authors from across disciplines of fiction, poetry, art history and cultural criticism contribute creative pieces in response to Sze’s work. The publication also includes photographs of Fallen Sky taken over the course of a full year, capturing the dynamic seasonality of the artwork and the context of Storm King’s environment. Installation photography illustrates Fallen Sky’s ability to reflect movement and to depict how the landscape behaves and changes over time, the work’s appearance shifting continuously depending on the season, time of day and weather.

A spare, sparkling tour de force about one woman's journey to becoming a cop, by master of noir James Sallis, author of Drive. Sarah Jane Pullman is a cop with a complicated past. From her small-town chicken-farming roots through her runaway adolescence, court-ordered Army stint, ill-advised marriage and years slinging scrambled eggs over greasy spoon griddles, Sarah Jane unfolds her life story, a parable about memory, atonement, and finding shape in chaos. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she is named the de facto sheriff of a rural town, investigating the mysterious disappearance of the sheriff whose shoes she's filling--and the even more mysterious realities of the life he was hiding from his own colleagues and closest friends. This kaleidoscopic character study sparkles in every dark and bright detail--a virtuoso work by a master of both and the tender aspects of human nature.

Sarah Goes Coastal is the second book by Michael Farley, continuing from The Skinny on Sarah. Sarah is a former lawyer and always an adventurous misfit. She and her deranged companion, Klepto Pearl, have stumbled from one misadventure to another. She uses her pseudo intelligence for financial gain and is constantly tempting the Fates. They and the natural law of reciprocity usually aren't too far away and always seem to catch up.About the AuthorMichael R. Farley was born in Charleston, SC, and has had the benefit of a twin brother. Their young family was constantly changing domiciles throughout their childhood. They were cycled and uprooted from South Carolina to Florida and eventually back to South Carolina. The most enjoyable period of their young childhood was the time that they lived in the Miami area. The twins had a wonderful subtropical world to explore and evolve in. Left to their own devices, the spirited boys were able to develop a world of vivid imagination and acquire lifelong survival skills. After moving back to South Carolina, they eventually became military cadets at Carlisle Military School in Bamberg and graduated from this high school with honors. The self-discipline acquired here and martial atmosphere instilled a sense of toughness and patriotism. Therefore, after graduation the brothers attempted to enlist into the U.S. Army. However, because the Vietnam War was raging and because they were just seventeen years old, the custodial-mother-parent would not give written approval. They consequently enlisted in the USAF and promptly volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam. A year later and after signing a waiver, due to more than one member of a family being in a combat zone, they were sent to Vietnam. They would go on to serve three tours of combat duty there. The profound experiences of this war left an indelible impression on both, as the atypical maturation process was expedited. With the military obligation over, both brothers went to college on the GI Bill and obtained degrees in engineering technology. Both continued in the military via the USAF Reserves and served during Operation Desert Storm, in the first Gulf War. Michael became a senior research analyst for a paper and chemical company. He retired from the military and his civilian job, moving to suburban Atlanta, Georgia, where he now resides. Having eventually lived on three different continents, he became interested in other world cultures and events. He now consumes voluminous daily information, travels, and enjoys the pleasures of therapeutic writing.
