In this first introduction to Plautus’ Trinummus, students and non-specialists alike are guided through the themes, context, and enduring humor of this Roman comedy. The play portrays the story of an elaborate game of keep-away involving a hidden treasure, a hot-blooded spendthrift youth, his pious sister, her would-be fiancee, a con-artist, and the most unlikely of comic schemers-a group of overly pious old men. The conflict of the plot focuses on whether a pair of old men can help their absent friend Charmides by getting a dowry to his daughter without Charmides’ wastrel son Lesbonicus first spending the money on the usual comic debauchery. The money is taken from a treasure hidden by Charmides when he left and a sycophant is hired to pretend to bring letters from Charmides along with the cash for the dowry. Comic confusion ensues when Charmides returns from abroad just in time to intercept the con-artist and overturn the scheming of his friends. Long neglected, Trinummus is one of many Plautine plays that is experiencing a resurgence. This volume elucidates the humor of the play, which is largely based on parody and clever inversions of typical characters and situations from Roman comedy. This discussion is accompanied by an examination of the religious, social, and historical context of the play, as well as its modern reception. The genuine humor of Trinummus has something to say to modern readers, as it showcases how parody can skewer those engaged in pompous moral posturing and presents readers with a playwright who astutely views issues of imperialism and moral justification through a comic lens.

Let Me Remember: the Poetry of Sara J. Leach
Let Me Remember: The Poetry of Sara J. Leach is a charming volume of verse penned by a young woman inhabiting the bustling New York City of the 1930s. Sara J. Leach (1893-1970) received her impetus to put pen to paper and express her poetic musings while taking a correspondence course from the Poet Laureate of Florida, Vivian Laramore Rader. At the time, Sara shared a cozy apartment in New York with her husband, Lester Leach, who was a university professor. Sara had met Vivian during a visit to in-laws in the South, and Vivian was encouraging of Sara's literary leanings. Sara J. Leach gained her inspiration from the beautiful mayhem of Manhattan, the wonders of nature, the mystery of love and the comforts of family and friends.

Pull back the curtain on the most powerful position in all of sports: the Quarterback, the American equivalent of royalty, long glamorized, mythologized and worshiped. The New York Times bestselling author of It's Better to be Feared examines football's QB lifecycle: high school, college, the NFL, retirement--and all that comes with it. Before the Super Bowl trophies, massive contracts, brand deals, and millions of social media followers comes the dream. From the backyard to Pop Warner to high school to college, becoming the ultimate American idol requires single-minded focus while navigating a maze of bad breaks, insecurities, jealousy, pressure, and fame. Wickersham's fresh reporting goes deep into that journey -- and beyond, measuring the distance between what the men who have done it expected and what they found. Through unprecedented access into the lives of dozens of quarterbacks and generational greats such as Johnny Unitas, John Elway, Peyton Manning, Warren Moon, Steve Young, Patrick Mahomes, and others, as well as those striving to be remembered, like Caleb Williams and Arch Manning, Wickersham reveals how this one position has become emblematic of success in American life. An inside look at the drama, demands, sacrifice and glory that comes with playing quarterback, American Kings is a must-read not just for sports fans but for anyone who wants to understand what the quest for achievement and status tells us about the price of ambition.

The Deconstruction of Chief Blackhawk is a qualitative critical analysis of the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks' mascot, Chief Blackhawk. Through a decolonizing deconstruction of various Indigenous stereotypes, this book examines the ethical and moral consequences of the continued use of disparaging Indigenous imagery for professional sports mascots, dominant White society's reliance on the Indian as the measure of American identity, and the ramifications of colonial control of Indigenous agency, thereby justifying Westward Expansion. The Deconstruction of Chief Blackhawk is appropriate for graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in rhetoric, visual rhetoric, communication, cultural studies, visual studies, art, critical theory, and psychology. It also serves as an insightful resource for researchers, scholars, and educators interested in visual, critical, and cultural studies.
