A cross-country comparison of recent Labour Party governments in New Zealand, Britain, and Australia, and an exploration of how those countries' labour movements responded to their parties' neoliberal policies in power.
This painstakingly-researched book examines liberal predictions of the last generation to see what those predictions show about this important element of American political thought. The predictions do not fare well, for reasons that reveal crucial aspects of the thinking behind them. Writers forecast everything from the end of capitalism to twenty more Vietnams; some of the same people who now predict global warming were, in the 1970s, predicting global cooling; and many people expected the fall of the Shah would bring in an era of democracy in Iran. Academic researchers will find the book a unique examination of political theory; conservative readers will find it full of humorous debating points; and even liberals will be led to wonder what went wrong.

Studies the influence of the plastic arts on the major writers of Latin American modernism.Painting Modernism demonstrates the influence of painting and sculpture on the work of the major writers of Latin American modernism. Through his analysis, Ivan A. Schulman, a foundational figure in the field, offers a concise and new interpretation of works by José Asunción Silva, Julián del Casal, Rubén Darío, José Juan Tablada, and José Martí. Traditional critical discourse on modernism has emphasized the nature of this movement in terms of its self-referentiality, fragmentation, elitist/escapist concepts, and subjective notions of cultural and aesthetic authenticity. Schulman breaks from this approach and examines these works as products of subjectively generated social/artistic practices that are inseparable from socioeconomic transformations and the chaotic cultural crises of the modern world.
Providing a pragmatic approach to changing Internet protocols, this book introduces the SOCKS standard (Simple Solutions to Complex Problems). The SOCKS standard was originally developed as a generic proxy protocol, making it possible for network administrators to simply limit access to the Internet. The authors describe how to use an existing solution to problems within the Internet that would reduce rather than increase the complexity of an already complex system. The authors describe how to build a SOCKS-based solution as well as the tradeoffs with other approaches, such as IPv6.
This book introduces the theory of modular forms with an eye toward the Modularity Theorem:All rational elliptic curves arise from modular forms. The topics covered include• elliptic curves as complex tori and as algebraic curves,• modular curves as Riemann surfaces and as algebraic curves, • Hecke operators and Atkin–Lehner theory, • Hecke eigenforms and their arithmetic properties, • the Jacobians of modular curves and the Abelian varieties associated to Hecke eigenforms, • elliptic and modular curves modulo p and the Eichler–Shimura Relation, • the Galois representations associated to elliptic curves and to Hecke eigenforms. As it presents these ideas, the book states the Modularity Theorem in various forms, relating them to each other and touching on their applications to number theory.A First Course in Modular Forms is written for beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates. It does not require background in algebraic number theory or algebraic geometry, and it contains exercises throughout.Fred Diamond received his Ph.D from Princeton University in 1988 under the direction of Andrew Wiles and now teaches at King's College London. Jerry Shurman received his Ph.D from Princeton University in 1988 under the direction of Goro Shimura and now teaches at Reed College.
Forensic psychologists and psychiatrists are increasingly asked to provide expertise to courts and attorneys in the criminal justice system. To do so effectively, they must stay abreast of important advances in the understanding of legal standards as well as new developments in sophisticated measures and the methods for their assessment. Fundamentals of Forensic Practice is designed to address the critical issues that are faced by mental health experts in their role of conducting assessments, presenting findings, and preparing for challenges to admissibility and credibility. Uniquely practical and comprehensive, this volume operationalizes legal standards and describes empirically validated methods for their evaluation. Not only is this essential for mental health professionals, but it is equally valuable to criminal attorneys. Lawyers require both clinical knowledge and understanding of legal standards in order to prepare their own experts and to challenge those on the opposing side. For both clinical and legal experts Fundamentals of Forensic Practice offers a full view of all phases of criminal proceedings: - Pretrial—diversion, determinations of bail, waivers of Miranda rights, and the capacity to consent to searches. - Trial—competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility. Beyond insanity, the latter addresses mens rea, automatism, and psychological context evidence, such as battered-woman syndrome. - Post-trial—sentencing, capital sentencing, competency to be executed, and other post-conviction issues. Other key features include: - Chapters on specific criminal issues in a consistent format, with comprehensive coverage of legal standards and relevant clinical methods - Guidelines for conducting more effective forensic evaluations - In-depth coverage of specialized assessments, eg. malingering, sexual predator cases, and the insanity defense. - A detailed overview of direct and cross-examination strategies This book is the second collaboration between Rogers and Shuman. As individual authors, each received the American Psychiatric Association’s prestigious Guttmacher Award for their outstanding contributions to forensic psychiatry.
Life is filled with brilliance: tenderness, wonder, and joy. Life is also filled with uncertainty and ambiguity: trust fragile, boundaries frayed, and compliance too complete. It is only when we break the silence and bring our truth to light that we can become whole and present in each new day. In a poignant collection of poems and illustrations, Dee Basch and June Shuman combine creative talents to share a lyrical narrative that explores our universal vulnerabilities and the complexities of relationships: connections that nurture and illumine through care and kindness or hinder and impede through neglect and abuse. Bearing Witness gives language to the need to be seen, heard and acknowledged as we strive to become our authentic selves.
