Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management: A New Approach to Innovation for GCC Entrepreneurs provides insight into the GCC business system and practices, a discussion of the entrepreneurial and SMEs activities, cases of innovation and startups, an overview of the challenges to create an innovative environment, and explains the steps that are needed to create a new venture. When we speak of small businesses in the GCC region, we are referring to more than one million small firms. Business education, innovation, and entrepreneurial development, however, fall short of what exists in other developed economies. As the authors engaged in the practice of small business management as well as education about small business management at the university level in the GCC, they felt that more specific tools were needed to make business education relevant to this region. One of these tools was a textbook that applies a more regionally appropriate approach to the activities, examples, cases, roles, and laws of the GCC. In particular, this textbook discusses: A conceptual framework for entrepreneurship and innovation development globally as well as specifically in the GCCThe GCC business system from a historical and economic perspective (Islam & Oil, GCC Trade Integration, Labor Markets, and Demographics)The challenges facing innovation in small business in the GCC: Legal, Education, Culture, managerial development, corporate governance, and financing. The legal environmentThe regulatory environment for small businesses (Obtaining a business license, approval of special requirements, IP, Etc)How to create a business planDefinition of entrepreneurship: characteristics and qualitiesExplanations of critical business functions to develop an enterprise

This insightful Handbook focuses on behavior, performance and relationships in small and entrepreneurial firms. It introduces a variety of contemporary topics, research methods and theoretical frameworks that will provide cutting edge analysis, stimulate thought, raise further questions and demonstrate the complexity of the rapidly-advancing field of entrepreneurship. With an extensive introduction, logical sequencing and a collection of interesting and original contributions from across the globe, the Handbook commences with two thought-provoking chapters, which raise issues of theoretical framing and highlight the importance of paradigm choice, methodology and method. After considering different disciplinary approaches to entrepreneurship and small business, various issues are raised about entrepreneurship education and learning and the application of entrepreneurship to various sectors and sectional interests. For example, what conceptual framework is available for entrepreneurs and small businesses? How does innovation relate to entrepreneurship and small business behavior? And what evidence is there of the links between better performing firms and effective learning? These issues are debated before the authors consider the future application of entrepreneurship research to different sectors. Both scholars new to the area, as well as established academics looking to extend their research scope to encompass the field of entrepreneurship and small business will find this work to be an invaluable and timely resource.Contributors: A. Small business leaders (SBLs) underutilize billions of dollars of US government funding for small business subcontracting. The role of small business in the United States is important to local economies as well as a major contributor to the US economy. Using the resource-based view as the conceptual framework for this study, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the strategies five government support sector SBLs in the mid-Atlantic region used to obtain US government subcontract awards to remain sustainable. The selection criteria for this study consisted of small businesses in the mid-Atlantic region that have obtained subcontracts on prime government contracts. The data-collection process included a review of the small business documents and participants' responses to semistructured interviews. The data analysis process included case study analysis and cross-case comparisons using methodological triangulation. Based on the data analysis, themes that emerged from the results of this study included education, experience, and networking related to strategy creation and implementation by the SBLs to obtain subcontracts on prime contracts. The findings of this study may contribute to social change by providing SBLs an opportunity to learn strategies to obtain subcontracts, which could increase organizational opportunities, promote job creation, and help to improve local economies through increases in tax revenues that could help the elderly, children, and others within the community.

"Business school can teach you accounting, finance, economics or even business law, but not how to start a small business. I realized it more after reading this book. There are just so many steps one has to take before he or she opens up a small business none of which are taught in a school. Unless you have a mentor who knows all the steps, you will need a guide like this as your go-to reference guide." - J. Jack From Idea to LaunchHow to Write an Effective Business Plan Step By StepAn accountant can tell you when you structure a business, how to file for your EIN with the IRS, or how to set up your single member LLC to S crop so you are not getting double taxation while enjoying the protection of a corporation. An attorney can guide you on how to properly draft the LLC operating agreement or articles of incorporation; they can also help you draw up partnership agreements where you have legal protections against all kinds of fraud and theft. But only a veteran business owner can show you when starting a business what you should do and what you should not. What to do first and what not do first.Only a business owner who has opened, closed or sold over a dozen businesses in the last 24 years. You can call me a serial entrepreneur. But no I am not in the habit of starting a business and then closing its doors and moving on to the next shiny thing. No, I opened many locations of the similar type of businesses for the most part. But I also did venture into a few different ones like wholesale, exporting, dropshipping and once I even started a service related business, but mostly I have always been in retail business. In my quarter century experience, I have made more mistakes than I want to admit, but looking back, I believe that each and every one of those mistakes made me a better person in business and in my personal life. I call it the personal growth learning curve. We all have to climb over that curve at one point in our life.Only a business owner can tell you what insurance to buy and what not to buy, what and how to apply for your licenses, how to negotiate with your vendors and suppliers, how to promote your business, how to hire, train and fire employees, how to catch a thief, how to secure your business, how to spot a fraud.
