The Amish Girl: A Novel of Death and Consciousness

The Amish Girl: A Novel of Death and Consciousness

The Amish Girl is the second volume of the Michael Gillespie Mysteries. A young Amish girl disappears, and no one knows what happened or where she is. When all else fails, out of desperation the authorities turn to Michael Gillespie and his remote viewers. The story they tell is one of a girl who has been kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered. Even worse they believe the killer is planning to strike again, and the countdown clock is ticking. In the middle of all this, Gillespie is approached about a national emergency and he and his team are brought into a secret government project to predict the firing date and the location for recovery of a North Korean missile. The Amish Girl takes the reader into a world where nonlocal consciousness is not only recognized but used to solve problems that no other approach has been able to solve. Like all the Michael Gillespie mysteries, The Amish Girl, is based on the real science of remote viewing, describing exactly how it has been used by the CIA, the Army, universities, and laboratories to give the reader a sense of verisimilitude quite different than is usual in novels involving the paranormal. The author is one of the founders of remote viewing, and his novels have a level of insight and reality not seen elsewhere.

'tonight is the longest night of them all' is Stephan Silich's second collection of poetry in which he once again captures the ordinary and extraordinary moments of living and loving. His poems are as much stories and observations as they are lyrical interpretations of the human condition. In these pages, he stretches his muse beyond reflections on love, family and human mortality and pays tribute to the streets of his native New York and to the artists and writers who have offered inspiration. But most of all, Silich's words offer and eternal song of longing and hope. The perfect remedy for those of us who fail and dare to try and try again. -Marina Aris, Brooklyn Writers Press

Included in the 2018 summer reading list by New York Times BooksA modern-day glimpse into the surprising reality of life in Iran.Iran: A destination that is seldom seen by westerners yet often misunderstood. A country that simultaneously “enchants and enrages” those who visit it. A place where leading a double life has become the norm.In Couchsurfing in Iran, award-winning author Stephan Orth spends sixty-two days on the road in this mysterious Islamic republic to provide a revealing, behind-the-scenes look at life in one of the world’s most closed societies. Through the unsurpassed hospitality of twenty-two hosts, he skips the guidebooks and tourist attractions and travels from Persian carpet to bed to cot, covering more than 8,400 kilometers to recount “this world’s hidden doings.” Experiencing daily what he calls the “two Irans” that coexist side by side—the “theocracy, where people mourn their martyrs” in mausoleums, and the “hide-and-seek-ocracy, where people hold secret parties and seek worldly thrills instead of spiritual bliss”—he learns that Iranians have become experts in navigating around their country’s strict laws.Though couchsurfing is officially prohibited in Iran—the state fears spies would be able to travel undetected through the country—more than a hundred thousand Iranians are registered with online couchsurfing portals. And thanks to these hospitable, English-speaking strangers, Orth gets up close and personal with locals, peering behind closed doors and blank windows to uncover the inner workings of a country where public show and private reality are strikingly opposed.
