Few pastors continue to read their Hebrew Old Testament after seminary. One reason is that it is too time-consuming, since many words have to be looked up in the dictionary. The Reader's Hebrew-English Lexicon of the Old Testament, now for the first time complete in one volume, enables the pastor and the student to read the Hebrew Old Testament with relative ease. Listed in sequence by chapter and verse are all words that occur fewer than fifty times in the Old Testament, complete with translation (based on Brown, Driver, and Briggs' Lexicon) and numbers indicating how often the word occurs in the particular book and in the Old Testament as a whole. At the end of each entry is the page number in Brown, Driver, and Briggs' Lexicon where a discussion of the word can be found. Appendixes list all Hebrew words occurring more than fifty times in the Old Testament and all Aramaic words occurring more than ten times.

This volume describes the traditional vocal and instrumental music of the Lao-speaking people living in Northeast Thailand. Beginning with a description of the cultural and historical contexts of this music, Miller continues with an overview of Northeast Thai music, its instruments, concepts, and certain proto-musical genres. Individual chapters deal separately with the non-technical aspects, including the history, texts, economics, and performance practices of both kaen playing and mawlum singing. Another chapter discusses all technical matters concerning the vocal genres, including the tonal nature of the Lao language, the relationship between melody and linguistic tone, scales, rhythm and meter, form, and tempo. The final two chapters deal specifically with the kaen--a bamboo mouth organ with 6, 14, 16, or 18 tubes, each with a free-reed. This volume is generously illustrated with musical examples transcribed from field recordings made in Northeast Thailand, numerous photographs, and line drawings. Miller concludes with a series of translations of texts from musical examples; an extensive glossary which includes two forms of romanization, the Thai spelling, and a brief description; and, finally, a bibliography, discography, and index.

Seventy-one of the 168 member nations of the UN were rocked by insurgency during the past decade. Among the most overwhelming of the conflicts were full-scale civil and separatist wars in Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Mozambique, Peru, the Philippines, Somalia, and the Sudan. In light of the fact that major civil wars also occurred in 21 independent countries during the 1970s, 13 countries during the 1960s, and 14 countries during the 1950s, it seems clear that the current prevalence of revolutions world-wide reflects a growing trend in world affairs.This volume grew out of the twelfth annual Political Economy of the World-System Conference, War and Revolution, held at Emory University. It consists of entirely original research from a variety of perspectives and disciplines and provides world- systematic, comparative historical and case study analyses of revolutions and the prolonged development of structural dynamics and political processes that give rise to these upheavals. The contributors emphasize the importance of viewing revolution from a global perspective with careful attention to the political and cultural dimensions as well as the economic factors involved. Following an introduction by editor Terry Boswell, the work is divided into four sections: world revolutions, comparative studies of revolution, case studies of social revolution in Nicaragua and Iran, and case studies of revolutionary situations in Poland, Chile, and South Africa.
