Miten ihmisen terveys, sairaus ja eliniän pituus riippuvat hänen yhteiskunnallisesta asemastaan? Miksi ihmiset eivät aina vaali terveyttään, vaikka pitävätkin sitä tärkeänä? Millaista on elää terveyttä ihannoivassa yhteiskunnassa sairauden tai mielen ongelman kanssa? Millaisia yhteiskunnallisia kytkentöjä liittyy sairauksien hoitamiseen? Terveys ja sairaus eivät ole ainoastaan biologisia ja lääketieteen keinoin ymmärrettäviä ilmiöitä, vaan niillä on sekä yhteiskunnallisia syitä että yhteiskunnallisia seurauksia. Näiden ymmärtämiseen tarvitaan muun muassa sellaisia käsitteitä kuin stressi, selviytyminen, toimijuus, tarina ja stigma. Kirjan "Terveys ja sairaus sosiaalitieteiden silmin" lähtökohtana on ajatus, että terveydessä kietoutuvat yhteen ihmisen ruumis, mieli, sosiaaliset suhteet, yhteiskunnallisesti muotoutuneet elinolot ja kulttuurin muovaama elämisen tapa. Kirja pyrkii rakentamaan eri tieteenalojen - erityisesti psykologian, sosiaalipsykologian ja sosiologian - tuottamista tutkimustuloksista yhtenäisen kokonaiskuvan siitä, miten yksilön elämäntilanne kaivertuu hänen ihonsa alle. Uusimman tutkimustiedon taustaksi kirjassa kerrotaan myös siitä, miten tieto on saatu ja miten kutakin aihetta koskeva teoreettinen ymmärrys ja käsitteistö on historiallisesti kehittynyt. "Terveys ja sairaus sosiaalitieteiden silmin" on perusteellinen ja selkeästi jäsennelty katsaus terveyteen ja sairauteen monitahoisina ilmiöinä. Se sopii oppikirjaksi monille aloille ja koulutustasoille, samoin kuin ammattilaisten ja päättäjien käyttöön. Teksti avautuu myös laajemmalle tietoa terveyden ja sairauden sosiaalisesta taustasta haluavalle lukijakunnalle. Kirjailija on sosiaalipsykologian professori emerita.
