The Writing Wright: Notes, Essays and Ponderings on the Writing Life
* How did the poetic ending of Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address get written?* Why is William Tecumseh Sherman so much a part of the American psyche after more than a century since his death?* What is John Roberts in addition to being Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court?* How can you be an author and not write anything? These are just a few of the questions that get answered in this delightful second volume of Jim Stovall's The Writing Wright series. Stovall, a long-time journalism instructor from the days when newspapers were the chief conveyor of good reporting and editing (alas, no more ) discusses the elements of good writing, gives some tips on how to do it, and -- most importantly -- tells some rollicking good stories that sometimes go beyond the writing life.Sit back and read this delightful book, laugh at the stories and the illustrations (executed by the author himself), and maybe even learn a thing or two in the process.Jim Stovall is a retired journalism professor, beekeeper, woodworker, avid reader, and commentator on whatever interests him. His website is JPROF.com. His latest gig is writer-in-residence at the Blount County Public Library in Maryville, Tennessee.

Judith Wright (1915-2000) remains a giant figure within Australian art, culture, and politics. Her 1946 collection of poetry, The Moving Image, revolutionized Australian poetry. She helped to establish the modern Australian environmental movement and was a key player in early campaigns for Aboriginal land rights. A friend and confidante of artists, writers, scholars, activists, and policy makers, she remains an inspiration to many. And yet, as Georgina Arnott is able to show in this major new work, the biographical picture we have had of this renowned poet-activist has been very much a partial one. This book presents a more human figure than we have previously seen, and concentrates on Wright's younger years. New material allows us to hear-directly, thrillingly-the feisty voice of a young Judith Wright, and forces us to reconsider the woman we thought we knew. AYA Daniels is a thirty-six-year-old woman that has never recovered from the loss of the man who broke her heart several years before. She spends and eats to compensate; becoming overweight, depressed, bored, lonely and deeply in debt. She is offered a lifeline to return to the Caribbean island of her heritage and jumps into a marriage of convenience with Desmond "DESI" Franklyn who had been something of an uncle to her having been the best friend of her father for many years. Aya's family is shocked and appalled by this union. They are determined to break them up before Desi destroys Aya like he has done with his other women. Aya moves into the Franklyn estate and adjusts well enough to her new lifestyle that includes a mouthy maid. MARVA does not like having a new head of the house and works to secure her future with the family before Aya can take it away. The three Franklyn boys have no issue with their new step-mother. They are satisfied as long as their father remains happy. Desi spends most of his time working anyway, so Aya begins to thrive in their arrangement even though she struggled with alarming revelations regarding his past. She nonetheless ignores the warnings of her family and focuses on her craft. Enter MARLEY Wright, a successful local writer contacted to review Aya's work. His initial interest in her narrative develops into something much more as they spend endless hours together when Desi is too busy working. Over time the Franklyn marriage falls under strain as Aya's infatuation with Marley is clear for all to see and Desi uses his authority to keep his wife in line, with the full support of Marva. Aya's mother PEARL makes herself a nuisance as she has never gotten over Desi, who was once her lover and is the love of her life. Aya realizes that she is more troubled than ever before since most of her troubles seem to have followed her to paradise. Her bills are paid, she lives in a beautiful home with help, has a partner for unremarkable sex and children she does not have to do anything much with. It becomes clear that it is not nearly enough and she begins to discover what she truly needs. On the brink of finally having all that she could have ever wanted, Aya is conflicted by her responsibilities as a wife, her devotion to her career, and her escalating desire for the man that she has an intense connection with. Amid the manipulations of the Daniels family; her husband's schemes to control her and his wayward sons; the sneaky maid and gossipy villagers; Aya is desperate and frustrated by not living her own authentic life. After overcoming obstacles to find her "right" place, a devastating string of events force Aya to make the ultimate sacrifice and finally confront what she fears most.

The story of Frank Lloyd Wright’s life is no less astounding than his greatest architectural works. He enmeshed himself eagerly in myth and hearsay, and revelled in the extravagance of his creative persona. Throughout his long career, Wright strongly resisted the suggestion that his accomplishments owed anything to earthly influences. As much as he wanted his achievements to be recognised, he wanted them to be unaccountable – but they are not. This book reveals for the first time how his unbreakable self-belief and startling creative defiance both originated in the liberal religious and philosophical attitudes woven into his personality during his childhood – deliberately so by his mother and by his many aunts and uncles, to honour the fierce Welsh radicalism of their ancestors.

Frank Lloyd Wright And Japan Revisited: Traditional Japanese Culture As A Means To Modern American Architecture
Although it has long been accepted that America's most famous architect was influenced by Japanese culture, the nature of Frank Lloyd Wright's debt to Japan has remained unclear. This book argues that Japan had a more profound impact on Wright's approach to design, and in particular on his notion of the organic, than has previously been acknowledged. It suggests that the influence of Ernest Fenollosa (1853-1908), the leading American authority on Japanese art at the turn of the 20th century — who also happened to be the cousin of Wright's first employer in Chicago, the Shingle Style architect Joseph Silsbee (1848-1913) — was pivotal in bringing together what would become Wright's twin passions of Japanese art and the organic whole.Building on the success of the original book, which won the 1994 American Institute of Architects' International Architectural Monograph Award, this revised and expanded edition contains new sections on the Western image of Japan as other, the question of cultural appropriation, and Wright's translation of Japanese building forms into his own architectural language.
Engaging Erik Olin Wright
When the renowned social scientist Erik Olin Wright passed away in 2019 at the height of his intellectual powers, he left behind an unfinished project intended to forge a connection between class analysis and real utopias. In taking up this project, the essays in this volume pay tribute to his generative theory, crystalline thinking, inspirational teaching, and personal generosity.- "Friends of the late Erik Olin Wright celebrate his life and work with essays about his lifelong preoccupations with analytical Marxism and the transformation of capitalist societies. The result is a beautiful book that glows with intelligence, optimism, and love." FRANCES FOX PIVEN- "Erik Wright succumbed to cancer while he was advancing a decades-long project of envisioning real utopias-designs for a workable socialism. The essays in this superb volume recount this monumental undertaking and also advance it in significant ways." VIVEK CHIBBER- "Erik Olin Wright devoted his brilliant mind to the challenging task of rethinking and reimagining socialism after the fall of the Soviet Union and China's turn towards full-blown capitalism. In this tribute to his work, progressive intellectuals and activists bring forward and deepen Wright's trail-blazing Real Utopias Project amidst the current deep crisis of capitalism." WALDEN BELLO- "These rich and compelling essays testify to the power and actuality of Erik Olin Wright's thought, as well as to his dialogism, mentorship, and influence. A terrific read and a fitting tribute to a brilliant scholar and beloved comrade." NANCY FRASER

Frank Lloyd Wright is known as the architect of an enduring modern American vision, but was himself extremely well-travelled, with journeys to far-flung corners of the world serving as opportunities to develop and promote his globalising ‘organic’ philosophy. Visits to Japan and Germany informed his Prairie House period, his Usonian manifesto was presented in Russia and the UK, and later he spent time in Italy and the Middle East during his Legacy period. Gwyn Lloyd Jones retraces Lloyd Wright’s footsteps in a fascinating globetrotting narrative that reveals Lloyd Wright’s architectural legacy as having emerged from what was, at the time, a newly globalised era of architectural production. Along the way the author meets the people who are living with and experiencing Lloyd Wright’s ‘organic’ architecture today and asks whether the buildings remain true to Lloyd Wright’s intent and what it is that makes them unique. Beautifully illustrated with Lloyd Wright’s own sketches and photographs, as well as historical photographs of his original journeys and designs, this book offers an original and contemporary view of the ambitions and lasting legacy of the first ‘global architect’.

Artist Daphne Wright is fascinated with the collections of the Ashmolean Museum and the history of seeing they present. Her latest project grows out of a lifetime’s engagement with this theme. Much of Wright’s existing body of work is steeped in a deep understanding of the iconography and history of Western art, as represented in the Ashmolean’s extensive collection. This book establishes connections to the Ashmolean’s rich collection of 17th century Dutch Still Life paintings. These genre paintings portray a range of subjects from arrangements of flowers to fruit, fish and game. Sometimes the paintings include a symbolic reference to the transience of life, in the form of fruit that has begun to rot or flowers that are losing petals. In Fridge Still Life, the exposed body of a fridge, containing upon its shelves a raw chicken and bundle of asparagus, is topped with a vase of wilting tulips. This is a contemporary re-telling of a still life painting, with its various familiar elements, such as a brace of hanging pheasants, a bowl of fruit and a vase of blooms, with can connote status or vanitas. Wright has explored the transitory nature of life throughout her practice. In previous work, Wright has used plants and animals, with their shorter life spans, to stand in for the human. Wright’s work also resonates strongly with the Ashmolean’s extensive and celebrated cast collection. Prominent amongst the plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculptures are the gods and heroes of Homeric legend. These idealised images of men still form the basis of our ideas of masculinity today. With Sons on Couch Wright is seeking to capture the elusive moment of transition into manhood. The athletic figures in the cast court may have been updated to social media influencers, but the pressure young men face today to achieve a perceived ideal body type remain the same.
