This book is a comprehensive study of more than 200 years of the shared and interconnected histories of Greek-Albanian relations, a field of inquiry that has not attracted the international scholarly attention it deserves. The book presents and analyses in detail topics including the contested borderland (1800–1912), the Greek Revolution (1821–1830) and Greek- Albanian entanglements during the Greek Revolution, Greek nationalism (identity and narrative), the Albanians (pre-modernism, belated nationalism, origin), the rise of Albanian nationalism, Albanian national identity and historical narrative, Greek-Albanian relations from the League of Prizren (1878) until Albania’s declaration of independence (1912), Greek irredentism (the "Northern Epirus Question", 1912–1920) and Albania’s precarious independence, Greek irredentism and Greek-Albanian relations (the "Northern Epirus Question", 1940–1971), the Greek minority in Albania, the Cham (Muslim Albanian) issue, the turbulent first part of the 1990s, the pending Greek-Albanian issues, and public opinion. It concludes with a road map for an eventual Albanian-Greek reconciliation. This volume will interest scholars and students of Southeastern Europe (Balkans), international relations and history, political science and sociology. It will also be a valuable resource for diplomats, journalists, think tanks and other organizations and institutions involved in the Balkans Greek-Albanian relations.
Identity and Communicative Competence in Spanish for Specific Purposes
Identity and Communicative Competence in Spanish for Specific Purposes analyzes the experiences of three Spanish for Specific Purposes (SSP) students, offering insight into the intersectionality of society, politics, identity, and linguistics in community-based settings.Analyses provide empirical evidence to a growing body of work about how experiential language learning (EX-LL) enhances student preparation to utilize target languages in professional services. Ethnographic portraits and discourse analysis also illustrate how EX-LL, such as internships, provides students with opportunities to position and protect their identities using linguistic and extralinguistic resources. Discussions are presented throughout the volume on how to implement EX-LL from a critical perspective that supports students while mutually benefiting community members. Harnessing community members’ stories to contextualise and illustrate the disparities U.S. Hispanic/Latinx communities face in accessing high-quality care and services, the volume proposes SSP as a form of advocacy to narrow this gap while simultaneously enhancing students’ skills in Spanish.Designed for graduate students, educators, researchers, and program developers in SSP, second language acquisition, heritage language pedagogy, and sociolinguistics, this volume will prompt the reader to (re)imagine how language learning traverses society, politics, and identity in community-based settings.

This accessible book shows how social structures and social norms shape both individual and collective health. It provides readers with an insightful understanding of the relationship between society, health and illness and highlights issues to inform a progressive, patient-centred approach to contemporary healthcare. The book begins by discussing how health has been defined and understood over the last century before examining how social issues such as deprivation, class, employment, housing, gender, ethnicity and policy shape health and contribute to health inequities. The book then discusses public health initiatives such as health promotion and screening programmes, the impact of resource allocation and the role that politics and policy play in supporting a healthy society. To bring concepts to life, the book uses case studies from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Guided by the fundamental principle that everything in a society has some effect or impact upon its health, and assuming no prior knowledge of the social sciences, this is the ideal book for healthcare students across nursing, medicine, midwifery and pharmacy, as well as anyone interested in the relationship between health and society.

Decolonizing Media Education Through Body and Performance

Decolonizing Media Education Through Body and Performance

Alexis Romero Walker

This book explores the ways in which educators in media programs at colleges and universities can work toward decolonizing the curriculum and implementing necessary practices of media literacy to help students become more responsible media practitioners. Taking an autoethnographic approach and reflecting on their experiences as a student and educator with an intersectional identity, the author proposes that for media education to instil positive change in the media industry, there must be a more direct objective of decolonizing media education. Looking specifically at how media education programs lack an understanding of how to make their courses more equitable, they propose an ambitious start to decolonize media education: by dismantling current classroom norms and rebuilding from the perspective of performance, as it is connected to the bodies of those in the classroom and the field, we can build a critical media literacy framework to make education equitable. This insightful book will support media educators in higher education, as well as k-12 media educators, instructional designers, and media researchers.

Thoughts and moods are chemical reactions in your brain that you might think you are powerless to control. But modern science has shown beyond doubt that changing your behaviour and thought patterns can rewire the neurological pathways of your brain to literally change how you think, feel and view yourself. Thought; moods; rewiwirning brain pattens; practical tools; exercises; positive thinking; exercise; meditation; In The Neuroscience of Self-Love, Alexis Fernandez-Preiksa takes the theory out of neuroscience and gives you practical tools and exercises to create a new self that is happier, more balanced and less dependent on others for validation. By re-engineering your habits, optimising your decision-making, curbing negative thoughts and harnessing the power of exercise and meditation, you will become more centred, connected and creative, and learn how to trust, prioritise and truly love yourself.
The Ethics of Digital Ghosts

The Ethics of Digital Ghosts

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are enabling the construction of “digital ghosts”: algorithmic reconstructions of deceased individuals based on patterns of interaction in their text messages, social media posts, and other personal data. This book develops an ethics of digital ghosts using resources from classical Chinese philosophy.Bereaved people have reported that conversations with digital ghosts can be surprisingly comforting and beneficial. However, there are concerns that they can be harmful, whether by preventing a hard but necessary acknowledgment of loss, producing ongoing dependence, or encouraging instrumentalization of our beloved dead. Building on some suggestive comparisons between digital remains and physical remains, this book uses resources from classical Chinese philosophy to connect concerns from funerary ethics to those presented by AI today. Confucianism, Mohism, and Zhuangism were remarkable for their rich, detailed discussions of the ethics of handling physical remains. This book updates and extends these concerns to apply to digital ghosts. It explores topics including the role of rituals and traditions in communal mourning, the epistemic consequences of fragmented standards for remembrance and data reuse, and the value of creative transformation and adaptation. The result is a psychologically plausible, culturally informed, and afterlife-neutral grounding for thinking about the ethics of digital ghosts. The Ethics of Digital Ghosts will appeal to researchers and graduate students working in applied ethics, moral psychology, philosophy of technology, technology and AI ethics, cross-cultural philosophy, and classical Chinese philosophy.

First published in 1899, with a second edition following in 1900 – just four years prior to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War – this in-depth study of Russia’s great expansion into Asia describes in detail the policies which brought it about. It is based on over 200 sources, both from Russian and British official documents. The accounts of the military expeditions have been drawn primarily from Russian sources whilst the part played by diplomacy is sourced from official correspondence and British government publications. Alexis Krausse saw Russian foreign policy as inherently expansionist and with Russia once again flexing its muscles in the war with Ukraine, this book has an enduring relevance and provides a comprehensive background to Anglo-Russian diplomatic history. It will be of interest to scholars and students in Asian Studies and those interested in 19th century colonial history in the region, as well as Russian Tzarist history.
