Five main topics are explored: the desire of many of his characters to ground their lives in traditional ethical values despite their realization that such values may no longer be certain; the opposition between pessimism and optimism throughout his films; gender issues relating to romantic love, sexual desire and the ongoing changes in our cultural expectations of both men and women; the idea that contemporary American society is rapidly descending into barbarism precisely because of societal failure to maintain a sense of individual moral responsibility; and a critique of psychoanalysis as a method for understanding human behavior. The Fugitives were an influential literary group that began at Vanderbilt University in the 1920s. Although the philosophically driven alliance was short-lived, two of its members, John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate, went on to become influential Southern poets and theorists. Although he retired as a University of Iowa professor of physics and astronomy in 1985, he remained an active researcher, using his campus office to monitor data from Pioneer 10 - on course to reach the edge of the solar system when its signal was lost in 2003 - until a short time before his death at the age of ninety-one. This book shows off the art of Elaine Allen who always use her maiden name Roennfeldt when signing her art. Elaine was a prolific painter, painting at every opportunity in water colours and during her 52 year stay in Kalamunda her husband estimates that she painted in excess of 1,000 paintings. Elaine married David Allen and they have three daughters. As well as attending to the needs of her family, she has managed to carry on with her painting and an active membership with the Kalamunda Arts and Crafts Group. Two or three times a week Elaine met up with fellow artists: Anne Silverton, Helen Sounness and Jean Mc Diamid and they visited numerous locations seeking out subjects of interest to paint: 'anything falling down or rusting away, very old homes and places with atmosphere like bush fires, water, mist and smoke'. Most of Elaine's art is of old houses and trees, bush scenes and landscapes of Kalamunda and surrounds and includes the vineyards in the Swan Valley, horses in local paddocks, the Swan River, views of Perth from Maylands and The Hills and beaches.
