In the Shadow of the Magic Mountain

In the Shadow of the Magic Mountain

A biography of Thomas Mann's two eldest children that provides intriguing insight into both their lives and the political and cultural shifts at the same time. Thomas Mann’s two eldest children, Erika and Klaus, were unconventional, rebellious, and fiercely devoted to each other. Empowered by their close bond, they espoused vehemently anti-Nazi views in a Europe swept up in fascism and were openly, even defiantly, gay in an age of secrecy and repression. Although their father’s fame has unfairly overshadowed their legacy, Erika and Klaus were serious authors, performance artists before the medium existed, and political visionaries whose searing essays and lectures are still relevant today. And, as Andrea Weiss reveals in this dual biography, their story offers a fascinating view of the literary and intellectual life, political turmoil, and shifting sexual mores of their times. In the Shadow of the Magic Mountain begins with an account of the make-believe world the Manns created together as children—an early sign of their talents as well as the intensity of their relationship. Weiss documents the lifelong artistic collaboration that followed, showing how, as the Nazis took power, Erika and Klaus infused their work with a shared sense of political commitment. Their views earned them exile, and after escaping Germany they eventually moved to the United States, where both served as members of the U.S. armed forces. Abroad, they enjoyed a wide circle of famous friends, including Andre Gide, Christopher Isherwood, Jean Cocteau, and W. H. Auden, whom Erika married in 1935. But the demands of life in exile, Klaus’s heroin addiction, and Erika’s new allegiance to their father strained their mutual devotion, and in 1949 Klaus committed suicide. Beautiful never-before-seen photographs illustrate Weiss’s riveting tale of two brave nonconformists whose dramatic lives open up new perspectives on the history of the twentieth century.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has undergone wide-ranging changes since 2006, when it was given a new maritime warning mission and the NORAD Agreement was signed in perpetuity. Andrea Charron and James Fergusson trace NORAD’s recent history, marked by innovations in technology and in command and control, but also by unprecedented threats. The shared defence of North America remains an important issue that should extend to other areas, such as the joint defence of the maritime and cyber domains. Fuelled by a deep curiosity about the command and its decisions made in the face of inevitable geopolitical and technological changes, this book uses a functional lens to evaluate NORAD’s options and the technological and organizational solutions needed to defend North America. The authors investigate the ways in which the NORAD command might adapt in the future as it struggles to modernize and keep ahead of new threats. This book comes at a critical time. The rise of new peer competitors requires a fundamental reconsideration of North American defence. As one of very few contemporary analyses of the command and its future, NORAD will be a vital tool for scholars and practitioners.

Since the year 2000, millions of hectares of land in the Global South have been acquired by foreign investors for large-scale agricultural projects, displacing and disrupting rural communities. Women are especially disadvantaged by the global land grab: they are less likely to inherit, control, or make decisions over land, but often need land to support themselves, their families, and their communities. While international organizations have developed global guidelines to improve land governance, tensions still run high as the current policies fall short.Gender and the Global Land Grab introduces a feminist conceptual framework to analyze land governance policy around the world. Andrea Collins shows how gender norms, biases, and expectations shape land politics at different levels of governance. Drawing on examples from sub-Saharan Africa and with an in-depth case study of land politics in Tanzania, the book assesses guidelines developed by institutions such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Bank to highlight essential considerations for developing and implementing gender-sensitive policy.Illustrating how gender shapes resource policy across all levels of political activity, Gender and the Global Land Grab provides valuable tools for transforming global policymaking.

Flawed is a true story of self-acceptance, adapted from the Emmy nominated film of the same name. In Flawed, author Andrea Dorfman tells the true story of how she falls head over heels for Dave, “the nicest guy in the world.” But she is conflicted about her feelings for her new love. He’s a plastic surgeon; she hates plastic surgery and its power to make people feel flawed. Dorfman joins Dave in the operating room to watch him fix a man’s badly injured hand. She sees for herself the difference between plastic reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Dave truly is an artist. She knows she’s falling in love. But when Dave performs a cosmetic surgery on a healthy boy so he won’t be teased at school, Dorfman questions everything she thinks she loves about him. Her discomfort with Dave’s decision to operate on the boy sends her on a journey of self-reflection that forces her to confront her own fears about the way she looks. She feels flawed. Dorfman’s playful and colourful illustrations along with her deeply personal writing takes readers through the genesis of her self-image — from the carefree days of her childhood to the gut-wrenching awkwardness of her adolescence, and beyond. When she realizes that her negative self-perception is stopping her from being happy, Dorfman makes the bold move to accept herself as she is — imperfections and all. As Dorfman concludes, it’s our flaws that make us extraordinary.

This is a memoir of my personal and professional experiences working with seniors and their families. As a social worker I've worked with individuals with both physical and cognitive impairments in both the community and various long-term care settings. Although lots of supports exist for primary caregivers, little time is geared towards helping children make sense of what is happening. Children are expected to go along with the process and their observations, fears, and anxieties are unintentionally ignored. Parents often say they will explain everything later, as they try to maintain their own health and sanity in the midst of never ending caregiver duties. Children are sometimes the first to recognize that things are not as they should be. This book was designed to shed light on why long-term care or home supports are needed when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. It is a glimpse into what families may experience and one viable solution to keep their loved ones safe. It is an effort to acknowledge that quality care facilities do exist and serve a purpose. It highlights the loving bond between a grandparent and child, while promoting the value and need for more intergenerational programs. We as a society have so much to learn from our elders. Cherish them when they are here. My wish is for all seniors to be happy and safe and most of all age with dignity and grace. For everyone who has had a friend or family member diagnosed with dementia, and to all the health care professionals that provide compassionate care: you are not alone in this journey. With the appropriate help and supports we can ensure that our loved ones maintain their dignity and quality of life. To my parents and my children: I commend you for you for your courage and strength. To all health care providers and my colleagues whom I've laughed and cried with: your empathy and daily efforts are above and beyond ministry standards. To my clients past and present: you inspire me and motivate me to keep going.
