Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension

Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension

M. Anne Britt; Jean-François Rouet; Amanda Durik

Routledge
2017
nidottu
Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension aims to systematically investigate how readers interpret reading tasks within a situation, and how that interpretation influences reading behavior and comprehension. Presenting a new model of REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV), the authors describe reading comprehension in terms of how a reader adopts goals within a particular situation that then guide what is read, when, and how. By applying the RESOLV model to a range of reading situations, this book provides evidence to suggest that there is no unitary understanding of a task, because individuals bring their own goals and characteristics to the situation; as such, it demonstrates the importance of understanding how a reader (e.g., student, test-taker, employee completing a work task) represents the context and the specific assignment. Written by internationally recognized learning sciences scholars, Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension advances the state of the art in reading research, but also seeks to inform a broader range of audiences, including those interested in the teaching and the assessment of reading.

In 1986 the Trustees of the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust decided to develop a major core programme of studies concerned with the organization, development and improvement of services for physically disabled and frail elderly people. This programme developed rapidly due to the enthusiastic response of those in the field; and by 1992 the total value of the programme was in excess of 2 million and currently totals over 3. 2 million. It comprised a cohesive matrix of grants commissioned throughout the United Kingdom for work in identified areas which, taken in conjunction with existing grants, formed a comprehensive programme of much-needed studies and research in this field. The whole was to be underpinned by a major study planned and financed by the Trust but conducted by the Royal College of Physicians to survey the existing services being provided by some 180 health authorities. This study, together with concern for the handicapped schoolleaver, information about the availability of disability services and the care of mild/moderate head-injured persons, formed the prime initial thrust of the programme. In the case of head injury, the Trust was particularly concerned that there was discontinuity of care for many patients and little evidence as to which treatments were effective. Once patients had stabilized in hospital they were discharged into the community under the care of their general practitioner often without a continuing responsibility from the hospital."

The Larder of the Wise: The Story of Vancouver’s James Inglis Reid Ltd. traces the history of the iconic store whose traditional Scottish fare and well-remembered hallmarks of “We hae meat that ye can eat” and “Value always” earned the following of devoted customers from inside and outside of the city for almost eighty years. Founded in 1908 and situated for most of its history at 559 Granville Street, Reid’s was a fixture in Vancouver’s downtown shopping district. Customers were drawn by the store’s cured and smoked hams and bacons, expertly prepared sausages and haggis, freshly baked meat pies and scones, and many other favorite items—almost all made on premises using recipes and artisanal techniques passed down for decades. When it closed in 1986 to make way for the Pacific Centre development, many thought an important part of Vancouver heritage was forever lost. But thanks to a treasure-trove of business records, letters, photos and objects preserved from the store, and drawing on her own personal memories and knowledge of the business as the granddaughter of company founder James Reid and the daughter of Gordon Wyness, who succeeded Reid as manager, author M. Anne Wyness brings this special store alive once again. Richly illustrated and engagingly told, this story of a unique family business is also a story of Vancouver itself. Through economic booms and declines, two world wars, shifts in consumer habits, the rise of the suburbs and the changing fortunes of the downtown Granville Street area, Reid’s enjoyed prosperity and endured challenges in step with a changing city.

Medieval Art 250-1450: Matter, Making, and Meaning is an innovative textbook for the undergraduate medieval art course. Using a case-study approach, the textbook engages students in close readings of medieval objects and buildings in their devotional and experiential contexts. It asks students to consider the fascinating trajectories of medieval images and objects, from invention to production and from reception to preservation. Building on the art historical traditions of iconography and social history, Medieval Art 250-1450 uses the critical methodologies of gender, race, class, queer theory, post-colonialism, narrative, embodiment, materiality, and eco-criticism to inform its case studies. These modes of analysis encourage debate and often demonstrate to students that ideas pertinent to contemporary issues are at stake in the study of medieval art. These critical methods support the image analyses in the text and intersect with the art historical content.

The Veterans Treatment Court Movement

The Veterans Treatment Court Movement provides a comprehensive, empirical analysis of the burgeoning veteran’s court movement from genesis through to operation, and concluding with comments on its societal relevance. Beginning with the unlikely convergence of therapeutic jurisprudence with the oft-misunderstood warrior ethos that undergirds the entire movement, the text examines every component of veterans courts, weighing the cultural, legal, and practical strengths and limitations of these programs. Each chapter assesses key components of the court, including the participants, law enforcement, judges, prosecution, defense counsel, court administration, data management, the Veterans Justice Outreach Officer (VJO), probation, mentors, and the community. The book concludes with recommendations on how these courts can further integrate with communities, maximize efficiency, and improve. The book shows how veterans courts seek to serve veterans’ legal, social, and psychological needs, and how they serve more than just offending veterans by allowing law-abiding veterans, many of whom suffered greatly when they transitioned out of military service, to exorcize their own demons and integrate their experiences into a socially recognized system of care. Incorporating program evaluation with sociological considerations, this monograph offers a comprehensive, considered examination of how – and why – these courts operate, and provides a foundation for future development. The volume provides essential background for scholars studying law and the criminal courts, as well as policymakers, judges, academics, students, and practitioners concerned with effective jurisprudence.

Population and Development in the Third World

Population and Development in the Third World

Allan M. Findlay; Anne Findlay

Routledge
1987
nidottu
Allan and Anne Findlay argue that a nation's human population is a vital resource in the development process. Changes in its composition - increased life expectancy combined with a falling birth rate, for example - can have profound effects upon a society. Warfare and mass migration of male workers also have long-reaching effects on those left behind. The rapid growth of Third World populations has often incorrectly been identified as the major force preventing more rapid economic development. Population pressure has been known to generate technological breakthroughs. Their final chapter examines family planning programmes, and concludes by asking who benefits most from population policies and questioning the right of developed countries to advocate family planning programmes for Third World nations.

Business is the largest undergraduate major in the United States and still growing. This reality, along with the immense power of the business sector and its significance for national and global well-being, makes quality education critical not only for the students themselves but also for the public good. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's national study of undergraduate business education found that most undergraduate programs are too narrow, failing to challenge students to question assumptions, think creatively, or understand the place of business in larger institutional contexts. Rethinking Undergraduate Business Education examines these limitations and describes the efforts of a diverse set of institutions to address them by integrating the best elements of liberal arts learning with business curriculum to help students develop wise, ethically grounded professional judgment.

Now in paper! The blueprint for instituting change used by America's top CEOs! THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER Lee Iacocca is one. So is GE's Jack Welch. And Unisys's Michael Blumenthal. They're "transformational" leaders—a special breed capable of managing the kind of massive turnaround most U.S. companies will have to undergo in the next decade to stay competitive. But what makes them able to steer their huge organizations down new paths? The Transformational Leader gives senior executives and managers the answers, not by profiling personalities, but by dissecting the process of transformational leadership and giving managers specific ideas for transforming their own companies. Praise for The Transformational Leader . . . "I hope executives everywhere take the time to learn from this valuable book." —Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard Business School author of The Change Masters and When Giants Learn to Dance "Takes its place in the first rank of books on leadership. It is a fascinating study of business leaders who actually accomplished major transformations. I learned a great deal from it." —John Gardner, founder of Common Cause and former Secretary of HEW
Genetics and the Logic of Evolution

Genetics and the Logic of Evolution

Darwinian theory, with genes at its center, still frames our discussion of evolution. Yet now the picture within the frame–a portrait rendered in detail at the cellular and molecular level–contains the real stuff of today’s big questions about living organisms. Genetics and molecular biology have revealed a new realm of complexity in life, with major implications for how we understand evolution. Genetics and the Logic of Evolution provides a much-needed overview and analysis of general principles and patterns of evolution in light of contemporary biology. Taking a functional approach to explain how genes are used across the diverse range of species, the authors consider: *Basic concepts and principles of biological complexity *Alternative and supplemental principles to Darwinian theory *Building blocks of life: how DNA, RNA, and genes work in single-cell and multi-cellular organisms *Communication within an organism *Detection and perception of the environment *Evolutionary order and disorder and the sometimes fluid relationships between phenotypes and genotypes Working outwards from the molecular level, Genetics and the Logic of Evolution moves its discourse towards a broader sense of life and how organisms live it. Written to be both scientifically rigorous and accessible to the layman, this treatment offers students and practitioners a refreshingly grand tour of the most important generalizations to emerge from recent biological research.

Examining the essential role—and exploitation—of frontline workers across the food chain. Food consumers are demanding a healthier and more sustainable food system. Yet labor is rarely part of the discussion. In Will Work for Food, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern and Teresa Mares chronicle labor across the food chain, connecting the entire food system—from fields to stores, restaurants, home kitchens, and even garbage dumps. Using a political economy framework, the authors argue that improving labor standards and building solidarity among frontline workers across sectors is necessary for creating a more just food system. What would it take, they ask, to move toward a food system that is devoid of human exploitation? Combining insights from food systems and labor justice scholarship with actionable recommendations for policy makers, the book is a call to action for labor activists, food studies students and scholars, and anyone interested in food justice.
