Something for the Pain

Something for the Pain

"It turns out there are all kinds of things about working in an ER that most of us haven't learned from TV or having sat in one. In Something for the Pain, Paul Austin—the ER doc you'd hope to get if something really bad happened—tells us, vividly and with uncommon candor, how, if you aren't careful, saving people's lives can make you sick."—Ted Conover, author of NewjackIn this eye-opening account of life in the ER, Paul Austin recalls how the daily grind of long, erratic shifts and endless hordes of patients with sad stories sent him down a path of bitterness and cynicism. His own life becomes Exhibit A, as he details the emotional detachment that estranges him from himself and his family. Gritty, powerful, and ultimately redemptive, Austin's memoir is a revealing glimpse into the fragility of compassion and sanity in the industrial setting of today's hospitals.

For more than two decades, Austin Bush has travelled across Thailand, collecting recipes, observing cooking techniques, shooting photographs and recording stories as he documents the rich culinary traditions of this country. He follows his acclaimed debut cookbook, The Food of Northern Thailand, with a deep dive into the food of yet another region: the cities, towns and islands (including Phuket) of the country’s south. The diversity of southern Thai food, with influences that stem from Chinese, Malay and Muslim cuisines, is apparent in dishes like Pork Braised with Soy Sauce, Pepper and Brown Sugar; a Rice Salad with Budu Dressing; a Spicy Dip of Smoked Shrimp; and Simmered Black Sticky Rice with Taro and Jackfruit. With gorgeous food and location photographs also by Bush, The Food of Southern Thailand offers a bold, beautiful portrait of one of the world’s most vibrant, colourful and full-flavoured cuisines.

This book explores the writings of Gadamer and Habermas on hermeneutics and the methodology of the social sciences. By re-examining their views of earlier interpretive theorists, from Wilhelm Dilthey to Max Weber and Alfred Schutz, it offers a radical challenge to their idea of the 'dialogue' between researchers and their subjects.

Fifteen years ago, Susan Morrow left her first husband, Edward Sheffield, an unpublished writer. Now, she's enduring middle class suburbia as a doctor's wife, when out of the blue she receives a package containing the manuscript of her ex-husband's first novel. He writes asking her to read the book; she was always his best critic, he says. As Susan reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings, a math professor driving his family to their summer house in Maine. And as we read with her, we too become lost in Sheffield's thriller. As the Hastings' ordinary, civilized lives are disastrously, violently sent off course, Susan is plunged back into the past, forced to confront the darkness that inhabits her, and driven to name the fear that gnaws at her future and will change her life. Tony and Susan is a dazzling, eerie, riveting novel about fear and regret, blood and revenge, marriage and creativity. It is simply one of a kind. "A superb and thrilling novel...extrodinary." -- Ian McEwan "Compelling...mesmerizing...absolutely irresistible."--New York Times "A perfect and literary puzzle, an irresistible tale anout marriage and murder, both thriling and moving." -- Scott Turow "A page-turner of a literary thriller." -- Sara Waters "Beautifully written, perfectly paced, impressively clever, and ultimately shocking in a way you never see coming." -- Nelson DeMille "Absolutely terrifying, beautiful, and appalling. Parts of it shocked me, and I am not easily shocked." -- Ruth Rendell

The Food of Northern Thailand

Austin Bush

Food of Northern Thailand is a beautiful deep dive into the regional cuisine of northern Thailand with a documentarian's approach and a photographer's eye. The food of northern Thailand is a world away from the highly refined, royal court- and Chinese-influenced style of cooking in Bangkok--the Thai food that most of us are familiar with. It's a cuisine with its own distinct identity, one that is rustic and earthy, meaty and fragrant; one with roots in the Thai repertoire but with branches that extend into unfamiliar areas; a cuisine that feels ancient, but is ever evolving. A writer, photographer, and travel-guide writer, Austin Bush has lived in Thailand for nearly 20 years. In this book, Bush travels across northern Thailand to talk to the region's home cooks, academics, restaurateurs, writers, and hawkers. Their recipes and stories, along with Bush's photographs, capture the people, countryside, markets, and of course, dishes and cooking techniques of northern Thailand. Each of the chapters in the book will focus on a single province, giving a snapshot of the dishes, staple ingredients, cooking methods, and people specific to that area.

Curing the Mischiefs of Faction: Party Reform in America offers a profound exploration of the history and challenges of political party reform in the United States. Originating from the Jefferson Memorial Lectures at UC Berkeley, the book examines pivotal moments of transformation, from the end of congressional caucuses for presidential nominations in the 1820s to the groundbreaking McGovern-Fraser reforms of the 1970s. By intertwining historical narrative with insights from the author’s direct involvement in party reform efforts, the book illuminates how these changes have shaped—and been shaped by—the broader dynamics of American democracy. Rather than following a strict chronological approach, the book organizes its discussion around recurring themes and enduring debates in party reform. This structure highlights the persistent tensions between inclusivity, governance, and representation that have influenced reform efforts throughout history. By examining these recurring issues with both scholarly depth and practical perspective, the book provides a rich resource for understanding the complexities of reforming political institutions in a way that balances democratic ideals with functional governance. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1975.

The Framework of Judicial Sentencing

The Framework of Judicial Sentencing

Austin Lovegrove

Cambridge University Press
2006
pokkari
Austin Lovegrove examines the sentencing of offenders appearing on multiple offences and how judges, having fixed a prison sentence for each offence, determine an overall sentence for each offender. Analysing judges' verbal protocols for sentencing problems and sentences for fictitious cases, he is able to offer, first, a model of judicial sentencing in the form of a decision strategy comprising working rules deduced from the given responses of judges as they attempted to apply sentencing law, and, second, a numerical guideline in the form of an algebraic model quantifying the application of the working rules. On the basis of this empirical data, Dr Lovegrove furthers understanding of the nature and place of intuition in sentencing and of how the cumulation of sentence can be integrated into a system of proportionality related to the seriousness of single offences.
