An immediate best-seller on publication, Ben Hur remains a dazzling achievement by any standards. A thoroughly exhilarating tale of betrayal, revenge and salvation, it is the only novel that ranks with Uncle Tom's Cabin as a genuine American folk possession. This was the book that finally overcame the inherent suspicion of fiction that still prevailed in much of america in the late nineteenth century. Wallace writes with a freshness and immediacy that brings every action-packed scene to life and illuminates the geography, ethnology and customs of the ancient world.

An intimate look at Ben Nicholson's everyday inspirations Throughout his career, Ben Nicholson (1894–1982) transformed everyday homewares into extraordinary experiments in abstract art. Nicholson’s studio was filled with objects that inspired him. From patterned mocha-ware jugs and cut glass goblets to spanners, hammers and chisels, these ordinary personal possessions were a source of almost endless inspiration to the artist. This book brings together for the first time Nicholson’s paintings, reliefs, prints and drawings alongside his rarely seen personal possessions and studio tools. It traces how the artist’s style developed, from his early traditional tabletop still lifes to his later abstract works. Still life was at the heart of Nicholson’s artistic practice. Through these humble items, he began to experiment with form and color. His early works in particular owed inspiration to his father, the painter William Nicholson. The book traces the artistic and personal influences on Nicholson’s evolutionary still life style from the 1920s to the 1970s. It explores his time with Winifred Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, as well as his encounters with other Modernist greats, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian. Distributed for Pallant House Gallery
Ben Nicholson: Intuition and Order
Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) is a pioneer of abstract art in Britain. An equal if younger colleague of Mondrian, he carved reliefs in an austere geometric style, working toward a pure abstraction that culminated in his celebrated "White Reliefs." These works placed Nicholson as a leader of the Constructivist movement in London during the 1930s and 1940s. It was during the 1950s that Nicholson achieved real fame; his paintings of this period owe much to older art, particularly the works of the early Italian Renaissance painters such as Giotto and Piero della Francesca. After being commissioned to make a mural for the Festival of Britain in 1951, he had his first retrospective outside Britain at the Detroit Institute of Art in 1952. Retrospectives at the Tate and a first prize at the Sao Paulo Biennale followed. This volume offers a concise survey of his career.

Ben Nicholson: Distant Planes provides a succinct and insightful introduction to a little-known period of the artist's career: his years in Switzerland. Nicholson is one of the great British modernists of the twentieth century and this publication includes contributions from the leading specialists in the field, with original essays by Dr Lee Beard, director of the Ben Nicholson catalogue raisonné project, Peter Khoroche, author of Ben Nicholson: Drawings and Painted Reliefs (2002), and Chris Stephens, Director of the Holburne Museum, Bath.In 1958, at the height of his creative powers and buoyed by recent accolades at the Venice Biennale and elsewhere, Nicholson left behind the coastal wilds of Cornwall for the serene beauty of Lake Maggiore. With a seemingly inexhaustible index of formal ideas, in Switzerland he returned with renewed vigour to the carved relief.Piano Nobile's publication is richly illustrated and includes several major reliefs which are presented alongside landscape drawings, both of which explore a poetic sense of place that was crucial to Nicholson's work during the period. It also includes previously unpublished material relating to Nicholson and his Swiss period.

This is not just the story of another Holocaust survivor. There is nothing about Ben Helfgott that is usual. After all, very few survivors would, just a few years after liberation, become Olympic athletes. He did exactly that. He was a boy growing up in a small Polish town, Pietrkow, when his whole life changed as the Nazis moved in during the first week of the Second World War. As a small child he was top of his class - everything he did was of a standard beyond that of any of his classmates. He learned languages so that he spoke and understood at least three of them before he was eight years old. He read newspapers and watched films that were beyond his years. His sister, the only other member of his family to survive, says that if she or anyone else needed a protector, Ben was the one to call in. Above all, he excelled in sports. He had a wiry frame and was small in stature, but no one else could match him in any game he played. When the Nazis came to Pietrkow, his mother and a sister were shot. He and his father managed to live a kind of life in the ever shrinking ghetto in the town. Both worked in a glass factory and a woodwork plant. Before long, they would be transported to the infamous Buchenwald concentration camp where his father subsequently died. Taken to Thereisenstadt, a centre that had served as a kind of way station for Jews on the way to death camps, it was there that he was liberated by the Red Army. Before long, he was one of 'The Boys' who came to England, which became his home. His sporting excellence was recognised when he was selected for two Olympic Games in which he represented Britain as a weightlifter. He became a successful businessman and retired early so that he could make a personal crusade of bringing together other survivors. He founded the famous 45 Aid Society, worked with the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Holocaust Educational Trust. On the international scene, he, in his mid 80s, is a prominent figure in the Claims Conference, which has awarded billions of dollars to needy survivors. In a way, it is a controversial book. He is a great believer in reconciliation with both Germany and his native Poland - and both nations have made him awards in recognition of his work. It is a story Michael Freedland tells after dozens of interviews with Ben himself, as well as with members of his family, fellow survivors and residents of his old home town in Poland. Ben was only 27 when he and his girlfriend, Jazz, were hit by a car while on holiday in the Dominican Republic. Jazz was killed instantly. Ben suffered a severe head injury which left him in a coma and at the mercy of third-world hospital care. His family swung into action and, thanks to their persistence and the support of Ben’s £10 travel insurance policy, he eventually received good treatment and a few weeks later was flown back to the UK by private air ambulance. He was still in a coma and, the physical and mental prognosis was very uncertain.During a month in intensive care he slowly emerged from the coma - with no memory and little physical control or ability.Expectations for recovery were low, yet Ben, with the help of his family and friends, defied medical opinion and, within a few short months he was out of hospital and embarking on an intensive self-directed rehabilitation programme.Key milestones included going to the Glastonbury Festival six months after leaving intensive care, much to the dismay of the medical support team. A mere nine months after release from hospital, and less than a year out of intensive care, he was studying full-time for a Master’s degree, striving to regain his cognitive abilities with a view to resuming his career in international development.Ben Again tells the story of how Ben determinedly recovered from a near-vegetative and amnesiac state to regain his sense of self, pass a second Master’s, run a half-marathon and learn to live a normal life again. This book is unusual in that Ben’s story is told not only by himself, but through the contributions of 25 others.

"Pearson's a common name.""It can't be him.""God wouldn't be that cruel."A painful historyWalking into the job interview confirms Ben White's worst fears. It's been eight years since high school, yet he can still recall Wade Pearson's taunts. There's always a chance Wade isn't the same homophobic asshole Ben knew. Yeah right.Except the boy Ben remembers has grown into one seriously hot, brooding man. In another life, Ben would have climbed him like a tree. Wade's gaze still makes Ben shiver - although now for entirely different reasons.A secret longingAs soon as Wade read Ben's application, he knew he had to see him. Ben's still as gorgeous as Wade remembers. It's obvious he doesn't expect to get the job, given their history. But Wade has an agenda. He has to make it up to Ben for treating him so badly - not that Ben will ever know why he acted like he did. Seeing him every day only heightens Wade's regret. If he'd had more courage back then, maybe he and Ben could have been something. The least he can do is show Ben he's changed. There's no way Wade can get what he really wants - Ben's heart.
