Creator of television series such as Shameless, Clocking Off, State of Play, Reckless, Linda Green and Children’s Ward, Paul Abbott is a British 'showrunner' and writer whose name and reputation for edgy, intelligent, successful and socio-political programmes holds significant weight both in the contemporary television industry and with the public. This is the first book-length academic study of the television programmes created, written by, and/or executive-produced, by Abbott. It is also the first academic study to attempt to consider his complete oeuvre. Within a broadly chronological structure this book elucidates, decodes and evaluates key examples of Abbott’s output, exhibiting a vital evaluation of Abbott’s work over the past three decades and assessing his contribution to British television. Engaging with thematic and ideological notions of the personal, the autobiographical, the honest, the shameless, the pleasurable and the painful recourse of the specificity of ‘ordinary life’, the volume seeks to combine close textual analysis of Abbott’s work with archival research and specially commissioned interviews with Abbott and other important industry practitioners.

Fairfield, including its village of Southport, is steeped in tradition and is rich in history. Many people who call this coastal Connecticut community home already know that Fairfield was founded in 1639 by Roger Ludlow and was visited in 1789 by Pres. George Washington, who actually spent the night at the Sun Tavern. However, do they also know the history of Pulpit Rock or for that matter, could they locate it? What about the granite planter at the junction of Main Street, Center Street, and Harbor Road--do they know the story behind that? Those residents who "remember Fairfield when . . .," as well as those with a desire to learn more about "Fairfield when . . .," will be fascinated by Fairfield and Southport.

Evolutionary Pragmatism and Ethics

Evolutionary Pragmatism and Ethics

Beth L. Eddy

Lexington Books

In the late nineteenth century, culture critics who were readers of Darwin’s work on evolution pondered what the implications of natural selection might be for human culture, religion and ethics. American pragmatists, by and large, rejected a social Darwinian spin on ethics, economics, and theology in favor of a less determinate humanist version of the ethical implications that emphasized contingency and meliorism. The early arguments between T. H. Huxley and William Sumner over the issues mirrors the contemporary arguments between Stephen Jay Gould and others against “the New Atheists’” determinate interpretation of cultural implications which largely echo the social Darwinists’ position but in the current language of sociobiology. The work of pragmatists such as William James, George Santayana, Jane Addams, and John Dewey detail an evolutionary perspective that rejects the moral implications of social Darwinism.
