Charles Reiffel (1862-1942) is widely regarded today as one of the foremost figures of the California plein air school of landscape painting. This book, accompanying an exhibition of the same name at The San Diego Museum of Art and San Diego History Center, aims to reevaluate Reiffel as a leading practitioner of Post-Impressionism in the United States.Charles Reiffel trained as a lithographer and traveled, worked, and studied in Europe before establishing himself as an independent artist in Silvermine, Connecticut. He finally settled in San Diego in 1925. There, he immersed himself for the remainder of his life in the landscape of Southern California, its coast and rolling hills, discovering in its unique contours new motifs for his striking mix of Post-Impressionist and Expressionist brushwork.Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist proposes a fresh assessment of the artist, firmly reestablishing his place as a national figure in the canon of American painting and shedding light on a splendid page in the history of American Post-Impressionism and Expressionism.
Autobiography Of An Artist: Charles R. Knight (Introductions by Ray Bradbury & Ray Harryhausen)
This book opens with a foreword by special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) and a biographical essay on Knight by William Stout (The New Dinosaurs). The autobiographical pieces feature illustrations by Mark Schultz (Xenozoic Tales). To round out the volume, it closes with memories from his granddaughter Rhoda Knight Kalt and appreciations from prominent names in the arts and sciences, from Ray Bradbury to Ian Tattersall. Though Knight once said "No one interests me less than Charles Knight," find out why artists such as Frank Frazetta, Mark Hallett, Doug Henderson, Joe Kubert, Al Williamson, and Bernie Wrightson have said that no one interests them more!

I have chosen these selections from the eight-volume collected works with an eye for the unity of Grafton's life and thought and, I must confess, with hopes that the same stories and theological formulations that have stoked the fire of my own faith will also enliven other flames as we continue the pilgrimage Godward. Grafton's descriptions of the history of Christianity in England, the life of E.B. Pusey, and his own testimony will be of interest to scholars of the Oxford Movement, Anglo-Catholicism, and the American Episcopal Church. His interpretation of God's providence moving in England and America shows Anglicans, Evangelical and Catholic, how to understand their place in the communion of saints, and demonstrates how to honor their fathers and mothers in the faith. As a theologian, Grafton draws on the Scriptures, Fathers, and Scholastics to contend for Anglican Orthodoxy, developing a theology which owes much to Richard Hooker, John Pearson, and E.B. Pusey in its articulation of classical theism, sacramental realism, Chalcedonian Christology, and a conciliar ecclesiology. As Anglo-Catholics receive refugees from the wastelands searching for the narrow path, I trust that Grafton's theology, an Anglicanism which participates in the consensual teaching of the saints and divines, will prove a useful guide.

In his sculptural practice, American artist Charles Ray (born 1953) has long been fascinated by the concept of representation, the depiction of the human form and questions of scale. Known for his keen sense of—and respect for—the uncanny, Ray has carved a widely admired path that crisscrosses the arenas of minimalism and conceptual art, while continually pushing the boundaries of visual perception. This book marks the long-term exhibition of works at Glenstone Museum selected by the artist, including Baled Truck (2013), a sculpture made of solid machined stainless steel, emblematic of the artist’s meticulous fabrication process. It also includes a conversation with—and text by—the artist and installation photography.

Charles Howard: A Margin of Chaos accompanies the first museum exhibition dedicated to American artist Charles Houghton Howard (1899–1978) since 1956. Howard, part of a circle of artists that included Alexander Calder, Gordon Onslow Ford, Grant Wood and Ben Nicholson, had an active and distinguished career in midcentury America and England. His enigmatic, meticulous paintings, often intimate in scale, bridge figurative, Surrealist and abstract currents in modern art. Though his work evolved over his career, Howard said that all of his pictures “are closely related … They are in fact all portraits of the same general subject, of the same idea, carried as far as I am able at the time.” The first scholarly publication on Howard, this fully illustrated volume includes essays by Apsara DiQuinzio, Robert Gober and Lauren Kroiz, a reprint of one of Howard’s own essays from 1946, an illustrated chronology and exhibition history.
