Based on the true story... Detective Colin Fitzgerald, only recently returned from World War I, with scars inside and out, is back in New Orleans and chasing the killer the newspapers call The Axman, a ruthless predator who has plagued the city for years, breaking into people's homes in the middle of the night and murdering them in their beds. The killer even writes a letter to a local newspaper--echoing Jack the Ripper from three decades earlier--and claims to be a "demon from hell." The top brass at the Police Department says the killer is a madman, but Colin suspects there is more to these brutal killings than madness, perhaps much more. But even Colin is shocked when he discovers the murders are linked to City Hall and a vast corruption scheme, with roots that reach back decades, to the assassination of a legendary police chief and to the murder of Colin's own father, the former chief of detectives.

While on jury duty in Wichita, Kansas, Brandon Clay suddenly figures out exactly where the bank robber on trial made his mistake. It was so obvious that he couldn't believe that no one had ever thought of this before. Brandon decides to use the cover of a hurricane to rob a bank. But, when four hurricanes hit the Florida coast in forty days, the temptation to rob just one more bank is too great to resist. Brandon enlists the help of Chance Adams and the two men put into motion an unprecedented string of bank robberies that the FBI never envisioned. This book is fast paced and contains everything a good crime novel should: Cops, robbers, disasters, heroes, and love at first sight. Author Chuck Koehler uses his vast knowledge of security systems, vaults, and disaster planning and response, to take the reader on a wild ride through multiple disasters and robberies. This novel also offers in-depth insight...often humorous...into the very serious business of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

I have met, spoken to, and shared stories with Vietnam veterans. Most were combat troopers and warriors. Some combat veterans are now authors and have written books about their war. They lived it and survived it. Theirs are war stories. Mine are stories set in that place during that time. In these stories, you will meet soldiers, deserters, truckers, dopers, drinkers, veterans, and Teamsters. You'll find them to be philosophical, erudite, crude, likeable, and possibly despicable. They are all these things and more. Few are identified by their real names and many are a composite of more than one person. The stories are my fiction, the characters are not.

Here is the unsung and all but forgotten story of a major failed mission of the American Civil War. Undertaken at the request of the President, the Navy dedicated a dozen gunboats (including the ironclads Monitor and Galena) and an untried secret weapon to the destruction of the railroad bridges connecting Petersburg with Richmond. Success would not attend their efforts, but the attempt was well worth the risk. Had it succeeded, the naval expedition might well have brought about or at least hastened the end of the Rebellion. That most of the squadron escaped unscathed was due entirely to the battles raging on the peninsula to the north. Southern leadership was necessarily focused on the Union army sitting but a few miles from their capitol--and missed the opportunity to capture or destroy a dozen of the Yankee ships on the James River.

Based on copious documentation and eyewitness accounts, this is the long-awaited book on the U.S. Navy's first submarine and its designer, Brutus de Villeroi, whose long career of accomplishments as a respected civil engineer was to be capped by his greatest creation, a working submersible for the navy of his adopted nation, with which it could sink the feared rebel ironclad, Virginia. The project did not go as planned, however, and it is difficult to explain the actions of the aging French inventor--actions that led to his dismissal. His boat would be taken over by the Federal Navy and become known as Alligator.

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE, BUT KNOWING WHERE YOU WANT TO GO IS NOT ENOUGH. YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW HOW TO GET THERE. The Power to Change shows how to use Stoic principles to create a successful life and provides a clear road map and directions to get there. It will guide you in designing a life that flows well and dealing with problems that arise in everyday living.More than two thousand years ago, a group of philosophers known as the Stoics analyzed life's predicaments and came up with simple solutions. The principles they identified were so profound that they formed the basis of many major modern psychotherapies. They are easy to use and powerful, and they can be applied to modern life and its problems. Often we don't pay much attention to simple principles because we don't believe simple things can be effective, but when understood and consistently practiced, simple principles can have a profound effect on our lives. The problems are real. The solutions are accessible. Each chapter in The Power to Change is bite-sized and actionable, focusing on common, day-to-day challenges - from anxiety, self-sabotage and overthinking to resilience, habits and productivity - and giving you easy-to-apply tools to overcome them.Practicing them is not difficult. But practicing consistently is where most of us fail. The Power to Change is packed with tools and exercises to help you practice consistently, bypass every motivational plateau and reach the big payoff.
