Naturally '70s Fabric

Naturally '70s Fabric

Constance Korosec

Fabric of the 1970s was as distinct as the clothing into which it was made. Bold colors and patterns that dominated fabric design ranged from flamboyant to garish. Dizzying complementary color and pattern combinations, called psychedelic, were adapted from sources as diverse as non-Western folk art and Western technology. The fibers of the 1970s were made of materials in two general groups: the naturals and the synthetics. This book concentrates on the natural materials and presents a visual sampling of silk, cotton, flax, and wool. The prints include solids, stripes, plaids, geometrics, florals, paisleys, and much more to offer a pictorial reference for future designs while providing a visual record of the fashions and fabric trends that shaped the decade. This book is a delight for historians, designers, and all with an eye for fashion, fabrics, and fun. A glossary, index, bibliography, and informative captions included.

Challenging Times

Challenging Times

Constance Backhouse; David H. Flaherty

McGill-Queen's University Press

By allowing the reader to draw comparisons between women's movements in Canada and the United States, Challenging Times shows that certain political and theoretical issues transcend international borders, ebbing and flowing between the two countries symbiotically. Topics discussed include the origins of "second-stage feminism," the strength of the women's movement within academic structures, and the challenges posed by racial, ethnic, and class diversity; violence against women; the promise and limits of legal reform; reproductive technology; and economic discrimination. Readers who are interested in the recent history of the North American women's movement will find answers to many of their questions about the victories, defeats, and fundamental challenges facing modern feminism. Those who have been active in the current wave of feminism, either as central participants or serious critics, will find Challenging Times equally fascinating because it endeavours to provide answers to pressing questions about the nature of feminism, the inter-relationships and tensions between different sectors of the movement, and the prospects for future growth. Many of the contributors to this volume have lived through and personally shaped the unfolding of the rich history of North American feminism. In addition to Backhouse and Flaherty, the contributors are Catharine A. MacKinnon, Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, Monique Begin, Mariana Valverde, Naomi Black, Marjorie Griffin Cohen, Micheline de Seve, Micheline Dumont, Margrit Eichler, Sara M. Evans, Marianne A. Ferber, Lorraine Greaves, Marjorie Heins, M. Patricia Fernandez Kelly, Patricia A. Monture-Okanee, Arun Mukherjee, Jean F. O'Barr, Christine Overall, Glenda Simms, and Jill Vickers.

In 1922, Elizabeth Bethune Campbell, a Toronto-born socialite, unearthed what she initially thought was an unsigned copy of her mother's will, designating her as the primary beneficiary of the estate. The discovery snowballed into a fourteen-year-battle with the Ontario legal establishment, as Mrs. Campbell attempted to prove that her uncle, a prominent member of Ontario's legal circle, had stolen funds from her mother's estate. In 1930, she argued her case before the Law Lords of the Privy Council in London. A non-lawyer and Canadian, with no formal education or legal training, Campbell was the first woman to ever appear before them. She won.Reprinted here in its entirety, Campbell's self-published account of her campaign, Where Angels Fear to Tread, is an eloquent first-person view of intrigue and overlapping spheres of influence in the early-twentieth-century legal system. Constance Backhouse and Nancy Backhouse provide extensive commentary and annotations to lluminate the context and pick up the narrative where Campbell's book leaves off.Vibrantly written, this is an enthralling read. Not only a fascinating social and legal history, it's also a very good story.

Both lionized and vilified, Claire L'Heureux-Dubé has shaped the Canadian legal landscape – and in particular its highest court. The second woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, and the first from Quebec, she was known as "the great dissenter" on the bench, making judgments that were applauded and criticized in turn.L'Heureux-Dubé's innovative legal approach was anchored in the social, economic, and political context of her cases. Constance Backhouse employs a similar tactic. Rather than focusing exclusively on her high-profile cases and jurisprudential legacy, sheexplores the socio-political and cultural setting in which L'Heureux-Dubé's career unfolded, while also considering her personal life. This compelling biography covers aspects of legal history that have never been so fully investigated, enhancing our understanding of the judiciary, the creation of law, the distinctive socio-legal environment of Quebec, the experiences of women in the legal profession, and the inner workings of the top court.

In 1997, complacency about the racial neutrality of a predominantly white judiciary was shattered as the Supreme Court of Canada considered a complaint of judicial racial bias for the first time. The judge in question was Corrine Sparks, the country's first Black female judge.Reckoning with Racism considers the RDS case. A white Halifax police officer had arrested a Black teenager, placed him in a choke hold, and charged him with assaulting an officer and obstructing arrest. In acquitting the teen, Judge Sparks remarked that police sometimes overreacted when dealing with non-white youth. The acquittal held, but most of the white appeal judges critiqued her comments, based on the tradition that the legal system was non-racist unless proven otherwise. That became a matter of wide debate. This book assesses the case of alleged anti-white judicial bias, the surrounding excitement, the dramatic effects on those involved, and the significance for the Canadian legal system.

The connections between biblical characters and these empty spaces in our lives are the focus of three dramatic sketches. By revisiting the stories of Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection through interviews with the innkeeper's wife, the centurion, and Mary Magdalene, "Empty Spaces, Empty Places" shows us the lives Jesus touched then (and continues to touch today). The centurion who witnessed the crucifixion tells how he became convinced that Jesus was the Son of God in the monologue "Filling In The Empty Spaces: The Soldier." And the Apostle Paul's life and Christian witness is depicted in "Filling In The Empty Spaces: Saint Paul." Each presentation confronts audiences with the same question: "What do you fill your empty spaces with?" Constance Sorenson, the Director of Christian Education at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Fountain Valley, California, holds a B.A. degree in psychology from California State University (Fullerton) and an M.A. degree in Reformation Theology from Concordia University in Irvine, California. Ron Lavin has pastored congregations in Indiana, Iowa, Arizona and California -- and the churches where he has served have experienced remarkable growth. Membership in his Davenport, Iowa parish increased by over 2,000, while more than 1,000 new members were baptized during his pastorate in Tucson, Arizona. A popular speaker at major conferences and a prolific writer, he is especially well-known for his understanding of the dynamics of small groups and evangelism. He is currently the senior pastor at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Fountain Valley, California.
