Old Testament Law

Old Testament Law

Dale Patrick

SCM Press

This book is a basic introduction to the study of Old Testament law, and assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. First, it examines when and where the series and codes of law in the Old Testament came into being, the literary conventions to which the authors were adhering and the social settings which cultivated these conventions and preserved them in writing. Then it goes on to expound the laws themselves, deciding what range of action is governed by a rule of law and what sort of enforcement is envisaged. Thirdly, it penetrates beyond the moral and judicial laws to the concepts and principles that inform them, and beyond that to the world-view underlying them. Finally, it relates the presentation of divine law to judicial law on the one hand and constitutional theory on the other. A postscript discusses the relevance of biblical law to the modern reader. Each chapter lists articles and books on the subjects covered in the text. There is no other book available quite like this. It not only outlines problems and suggests solutions, where there are any, but brings new life to what can often seem one of the more barren areas of the Old Testament.

Costly Discipleship

Costly Discipleship

True discipleship is not easy. Often a person's response to tough times and hard teachings reveals their actual motives in following Christ. Christian history is littered with those who could not or would not stay true to the end. But before we cast judgment on them we better take a long, hard look in the mirror and recognize the grace of God that stares back at us. It is only in his strength that we can stand firm. But stand firm we must, for God's glory and for the good of our world. While we become new creatures in Christ by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, following Jesus day in and day out is hard. That's why Jesus said we must first count the cost before we begin our pilgrimage with him. This is an expositional study of key texts of Jesus' teachings that remind us of what it truly means to follow him. This study is ideal for Bible studies, small groups, one-to-one discipleship, or personal use.

This book offers short devotional chapters covering key principles for men who desire to walk the right path of godly manhood. A godly man knows Christ, has a Christian worldview, lives under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, is aware of the temptations in his life and fights hard against them, desires to grow in his faith, exercises biblical wisdom and discernment, and follows his Lord wherever he may lead. These are the themes that run throughout these devotions. Before making it to this book, these chapters were sent out as devotional emails over the course of a year to encourage and equip men to walk the path of godly manhood. Each of these 52 chapters contains a devotional based on Scripture, questions for reflection and next steps, a prayer, and prayer prompts to help guide you in your prayer life for that week. This devotional can be used for personal time spent with God, as well as a resource for discipling other men, or to use in your small group.

This booklet is the fourth in a series on basic discipleship principles for men. In this booklet, we will look at what it means to bear witness for Christ in every sphere of life. If Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth, then we, as his ambassadors, will follow him wherever he leads us. We will want to represent him in the varied areas of our lives. In so doing, we will make an impact for him in our homes, workplaces, churches, neighborhoods, cities, and even our wider culture and world. This resource can be used for your personal devotional time with God. I hope, however, that you will also use it to disciple other men. It will also be helpful to use in your small group. It is my prayer God will use this booklet to equip and encourage you to faithfully represent our gracious Lord and extend his Kingdom into every sphere of your life.

I hope, however, that you will also use it to disciple other men. It will also be helpful to use in your small group. It is my prayer that God will use this booklet to equip and encourage you to meet with other men for the purpose of digging into God's Word together and watching over one another in love.

Written by respected authorities in the fields of education and literacy studies, Words: The Foundation of Literacy is a groundbreaking book for teachers, administrators, and education students. Dale and Bonnie Johnson present a fresh, inspiring reminder of why studying language (from word origins to word structure) is such a vital first step in the development of students' vocabulary, literacy, writing skills, and overall ability to learn. At a time when high-stakes testing has squeezed substance from many curricula, Johnson and Johnson provide ways to enhance students' understanding, interest, and appreciation of language and all its subtleties. Words explores how meaning in language is created by the use and interrelationships of words, phrases, and sentences, their denotations, connotations, implications, and ambiguities. From birth, most children exhibit a natural interest in language: its sounds, nuances, and unpredictable qualities. It is important to sustain, stimulate, and recapture that natural interest in the classroom, and Words provides a multitude of creative and practical techniques for doing so.

Practical Spreadsheet Modeling Using @Risk provides a guide of how to construct applied decision analysis models in spreadsheets. The focus is on the use of Monte Carlo simulation to provide quantitative assessment of uncertainties and key risk drivers. The book presents numerous examples based on real data and relevant practical decisions in a variety of settings, including health care, transportation, finance, natural resources, technology, manufacturing, retail, and sports and entertainment. All examples involve decision problems where uncertainties make simulation modeling useful to obtain decision insights and explore alternative choices. Good spreadsheet modeling practices are highlighted. The book is suitable for graduate students or advanced undergraduates in business, public policy, health care administration, or any field amenable to simulation modeling of decision problems. The book is also useful for applied practitioners seeking to build or enhance their spreadsheet modeling skills.Features Step-by-step examples of spreadsheet modeling and risk analysis in a variety of fields Description of probabilistic methods, their theoretical foundations, and their practical application in a spreadsheet environment Extensive example models and exercises based on real data and relevant decision problems Comprehensive use of the @Risk software for simulation analysis, including a free one-year educational software license
Spatial Linear Models for Environmental Data

Spatial Linear Models for Environmental Data

Dale L. Zimmerman; Jay M. Ver Hoef

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

sidottu
Many applied researchers equate spatial statistics with prediction or mapping, but this book naturally extends linear models, which includes regression and ANOVA as pillars of applied statistics, to achieve a more comprehensive treatment of the analysis of spatially autocorrelated data. Spatial Linear Models for Environmental Data, aimed at students and professionals with a master’s level training in statistics, presents a unique, applied, and thorough treatment of spatial linear models within a statistics framework. Two subfields, one called geostatistics and the other called areal or lattice models, are extensively covered. Zimmerman and Ver Hoef present topics clearly, using many examples and simulation studies to illustrate ideas. By mimicking their examples and R code, readers will be able to fit spatial linear models to their data and draw proper scientific conclusions. Topics covered include:Exploratory methods for spatial data including outlier detection, (semi)variograms, Moran’s I, and Geary’s c.Ordinary and generalized least squares regression methods and their application to spatial data.Suitable parametric models for the mean and covariance structure of geostatistical and areal data.Model-fitting, including inference methods for explanatory variables and likelihood-based methods for covariance parameters.Practical use of spatial linear models including prediction (kriging), spatial sampling, and spatial design of experiments for solving real world problems. All concepts are introduced in a natural order and illustrated throughout the book using four datasets. All analyses, tables, and figures are completely reproducible using open-source R code provided at a GitHub site. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter, with full solutions provided on an instructor’s FTP site supplied by the publisher.
