Must rural Americans pay the price of urban progress and modern lifestyles? How will the increased pressures of the 1980s affect those who live and work in rural communities? In addressing these overriding questions the authors of this book take a serious look at such issues as who will operate our farms and how those farms will meet rising demands for food, how higher energy costs will change life in rural areas, the current and future needs of rural families and their communities, who in fact lives in these communities, and what can be done about escalating rural crime and recent social changes that have disrupted the traditional patterns of rural society. Because the United States is an interdependent system of rural and urban, of providers and consumers, these issues are vitally important to all-scholars, policy makers, and citizens alike. The contributors bring us up to date on the contemporary rural scene and offer suggestions for research essential to intelligent decision making about the challenges and problems the 1980s hold in store for rural America.
Every successive generation finds fresh reasons for the study of natural law. Current interest in the natural law may well be due to a pervasive moral pessimism in the Western cultural context and wider contemporary geopolitical challenges. Those geopolitical challenges result from two significant and worrisome global developments – unprecedented violent persecution of religious minorities on several continents and a growing climate of secular hostility toward religious faith in Western societies. Natural Law and Religious Freedom aims to address what is relatively absent from the literature by demonstrating the importance of natural law ethics in both establishing and preserving basic human rights, of which religious freedom has pride of place.Probing contemporary challenges to natural law thinking that are both internal and external to religious faith, and examining the character and constitution of natural law ethics, Natural Law and Religious Freedom will be of interest to theologians, ethicists and philosophers as well as policy analysts, politicians and activists who are concerned to anchor religious freedom and human rights policy considerations in an enduring way.
We live in a society with ever-changing needs and expectations. Education practitioners and policy makers need therefore to face the challenges of new economic, social and technological conditions in their work. There is a global concern to develop forms of education and training which are open to the demands of needs of learners, and which are accessible at times and places suitable to those learners. Governments, institutions and practitioners are developing and implementing policies which reflect these trends. The overall theme of this book is the relationship between government and organizational policies and the work of practitioners in open and distance learning. The book does this by exploring a selection of international examples. The authors, many of them recognized experts, write from a wide range of international and organizational perspectives. Each one draws on significant experience within his or her field. Terry Evans is Head of the Graduate School of Education at Deakin University. He was the foundation director of the Master of Distance Education course there and has extensive experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. Daryl Nation is Deputy Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monash University. He is Associate Professor in the School and divides his time between policy development, research and teaching.

The full history of St. Patrick's day is captured here for the first time in The Wearing of the Green.Illustrated with photos, the book spans the medieval origins, steeped in folklore and myth, through its turbulent and troubled times when it acted as fuel for fierce political argument, and tells the fascinating story of how the celebration of 17th March was transformed from a stuffy dinner for Ireland's elite to one of the world's most public festivals.Looking at more general Irish traditions and Irish communities throughout the world, Mike Cronin and Daryl Adair follow the history of this widely celebrated event, examining how the day has been exploited both politically and commercially, and they explore the shared heritage of the Irish through the development of this unique patriotic holiday.Highly informative for students of history, cultural studies and sociology, and an absolute delight for anyone interested in the fascinating and unique culture of Ireland.

As culturally relevant psychiatry becomes common practice, the need for competent and culturally relevant forensic psychiatry comes to the forefront. This volume, written by one expert in cultural psychiatry and another in forensic psychiatry addresses that need. By combining their expertise in these areas, they are able to develop and create a new body of knowledge and experiences addressing the issue of the cultural aspects of forensic psychiatry. Beginning with an introduction to cultural and ethnic aspects of forensic psychiatry, this volume will address basic issues of the practice, as well as more detailed areas ranging from the various psychiatric disorders to intensive analysis and discussion of how to perform forensic psychiatric practice in a culturally relevant and competent way. Also the book suggests methods for continued awareness and sensitivity to issues of cultural and ethnic diversity in the field.

COGNITIVE SELF CHANGE “The consensus amongst the leading researchers in the offender treatment area is that the comprehensive and sophisticated clinical methods the authors have derived for offender treatment are unsurpassed. Indeed, they have formed the basis for what is known as the core correctional practices for reducing anti-social behavior.” Paul Gendreau, Professor Emeritus, University of New Brunswick “Bush and colleagues’ phenomenologically based approach to offender rehabilitation is based explicitly on the stories they have collected from prisoners and probationers and is a welcome contribution to an academic literature that too often obfuscates the actual work involved in delivering help to the hardest to reach in the criminal justice system.” Shadd Maruna, Ph.D., Dean of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice Cognitive Self Change presents a practical guide to rehabilitation based on understanding the way individual offenders experience themselves and the world around them at the moment they offend. De-incentivizing criminal behavior and replacing it with self-empowered change are the keys to upending the traditionally antagonistic relationship between criminals and those meant to help them change. The authors, with their experience of working with offenders and implementing rehabilitation programs, have drawn together clinical and academic perspectives on the treatment of high-risk offenders, analyzing current approaches to treatment and the problems encountered in their application. Cognitive Self Change rejects the traditional dichotomy of control versus treatment, devising instead a strategy that integrates both. Focusing on high-risk and “hard-core” offenders, not just those that are “ready to change,” they discuss why offenders offend, why they are seldom motivated to change, and why they often fail to engage in treatment. This leads to a strategy of communication that teaches offenders a set of skills they can use to change themselves, and that motivates them to do so.

An acidic lifestyle-consuming sugar, dairy, excess animal proteins, processed food, alcohol, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, refined grains - along with lack of exercise, food allergies, and food sensitivities-causes inflammation. And inflammation is the culprit behind many of our current ailments, as well as causing weight gain and preventing weight loss. It's a vicious cycle-being acidic and inflamed makes you fat, and being fat encourages inflammation. Modern diets are so acidic that our bodies must work overtime to neutralize the excess acid. Darryl Gioffre is a chiropractor and raw foods chef who discovered the healing power of foods after his own battle with sugar addiction and highly acidic foods. Now, his chief passion is getting people to remove these toxic foods from their diet-and that's exactly what he does in Get Off Your Acid. Dr. Gioffre's signature program shows you how to alkalize your diet and balance your pH, which frees up your body's resources to not only fight the bad stuff, but promote the good stuff that happens naturally once your body is in balance. You'll find that you have more energy, less pain, a stronger immune system, better focus, deeper sleep, improved digestion, your skin begins to glow, and-bonus-the fat literally melts off of your body.
In his first book, Dr. Daryl Gioffre showed readers how to kick processed and highly acidic foods to lower inflammation and increase health. Now, a former sugar addict himself, he's taking on the sweet stuff. Starting with all the reasons we are addicted to sugar (hint: it's not our fault!), to the very real dangers of a sugar-heavy diet (chronic ailments, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer; deficiency in crucial minerals; brain fog; obesity; and more), Dr. Gioffre shares his life-changing plan to kick sugar for good. And there is a lot of good: Dr. Gioffre doesn't believe in taking away; his program is based on adding more of the good stuff--delicious nutrient-dense foods. What you will lose is your dependence on sugar, the attendant sugar crashes--and unwanted weight. With a simple 8-minute Belly Fat Burning Workout, and 65 delicious, easy recipes, plus meal planning tips and ideas to get you going and keep you on track, Get Off Your Sugar gives you the tools to take control of your health and your future.
Where Is God in All This?

Dr. Tony S. Everett provides us with a series of life-related sermons on the Old Testament lessons... the sermons are biblically and theologically responsible, not sacrificing the message for relevance... If I were in the pew I would be drawn to listen to this preacher and his examples and words would follow me into the week (from the Foreword) Dr. H. Fredrick Reisz Jr. President, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary Columbia, South Carolina Tony Everett's stirring messages are as interesting to read as they would be to hear. He is a brilliant wordsmith with a keen insight into the needs of people and the ability to address God's word to those needs. It is easy for us to seek "quick-fix" solutions to challenges of declining attendance, shrinking income, and disappearing volunteers. We search in futility for simple techniques that promise the moon. Unfortunately we soon discover that these gimmicks are like the River Platte in Nebraska; a mile wide, but only an inch deep. Invariably such feeble solutions flash for a brief time, then crash in chaos. (from the Introduction) Among the seventeen sermons in this book are: Why Did Pastor Hypnotize Jenny? -- Advent 1 Anticipation Proclamation -- Advent 3 Unexpected Joy; Undeserved Gift -- Christmas Eve/Day Reach For The Light -- Epiphany New Name, New Status -- Epiphany 3 Who's In Charge Here Anyway? -- Epiphany B Looking Back, Moving Forward -- Transfiguration Tony S. Everett is a summa cum laude graduate of Youngstown State University. He earned an M.Div. degree from Hamma School of Theology and a Th.D. degree from Boston University School of Theology. He served in the parish ministry for eighteen years in Ohio and Massachusetts, and was also the director of a community health center in Angola, New York. He is currently the Dewey F. Beam Professor of Pastoral Care at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina, where he also consults with congregations in spiritual growth, leadership training, and conflict management.
Restating what all people intuit and what this means in moral, specifically bioethical, discourse is theraison d'etre for this volume. J.aDaryl Charles argues that a traditional metaphysics of natural law lies at the heart of the present reconstructive project, and that a revival in natural-law thinking is of the highest priority for the Christian community as we contend in, rather than abdicate, the public square. Nowhere is this more on display than in the realm of bioethics, where the most basic moral questions -- human personhood, human rights versus responsibilities, the reality of moral evil, the basis of civil society -- are being debated. With his timely application of natural-law thinking to the field of bioethics, Charles seeks to breathe new life back into this key debate.
This reference examines the properties, conditions, and theoretical principles governing the safety and efficacy of various food preservation, storage, and packaging techniques. The book analyzes methods to predict and optimize the nutrition, texture, and quality of food compounds while reducing operating cost and waste. The Second Edition contains new chapters and discussions on non-thermal processes; the mechanisms of heat transfer, including conduction, convection, radiation, and dielectric and microwave heating; the kinetic parameters of food process operations; freezing technology, using illustrative examples; recent breakthroughs in cryochemistry and cryobiology, and more.

Pacifism, jihad and militarism--are these the only alternatives to global injustice? J. Daryl Charles considers the "just war" teaching of the church throughout history, comparing it with both pacifism and jihad/militarism and addressing the unique challenges of international injustice and global terrorism.

Peter empowers believers to be communities of hope, not retaliating for the abuse they suffer, but bearing witness of their Lord by word, lifestyle, and doing good.J. Daryl Charles shows how 2 Peter and Jude are relevant since the church still faces ethical compromises and pastoral dilemmas. Their apocalyptic imagery stresses that the concerns of Christian faithfulness and faith are absolutely crucial. The church needs such moral exhortation.Table of Contents (PDF)Read the Introduction to 1-2 Peter (PDF)Read the Introduction to Jude (PDF)Check out other commentaries in this series
