“I’d rather win a Pulitzer Prize than be President of the United States,” John F. Kennedy confided to author Margaret Coit shortly after his election to the Senate in 1953. Kennedy got his wish four years later, when his book Profiles in Courage was awarded the Pulitzer for biography—even though it wasn’t among the finalists for the prize. Furthermore, the role of Ted Sorensen in drafting the main chapters in the book was never acknowledged by Kennedy’s inner circle, and Kennedy himself was hyper-sensitive until his dying day about rumors that cast doubt on his ownership of Profiles in Courage. Still, Jack Kennedy the writer is part of the Kennedy narrative that helped propel his political career. And he did indeed work for a time as a journalist, and brought a measures of erudition, wit, and charm to his speeches. But if the rumors surrounding authorship of Profiles in Courage were proven to be true prior to his ascendance to the Presidency, there might have been no brief and shining moment in America called Camelot.
Management of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children

A substantial body of literature exists on functional gastrointestinal disorders in children and on the bio-psycho-social model of clinical practice. However, the integration of these concepts into the management of children with functional disorders remains poorly defined. A satisfactory clinical outcome often depends on the clinician's ability to discern not only the biological factors in illness, but also the unique cognitive and emotional needs that pediatric patients bring to the task of healing. This book further defines bio-psycho-social theory with respect to six groups of functional disorders and illustrates, through clinical examples, concepts of management developed during 45 years of practice. This book is aimed at pediatricians, family practitioners, pediatric mental health practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners and pediatric gastroenterologists.

In his famous poem, "IF", Rudyard Kipling extolled the virtue of knowing how to "keep your head when all about you are losing theirs--and blaming it on you." This book is for people who want to be like that. The principles shared are derived from the writings of Simon Peter, an early follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus saw Simon's potential from the beginning. That's why he gave him such an ironic nickname -- ROCK (Peter). Simon was anything but "solid" for quite awhile. But God knew what he would become. And when Simon Peter was much older, it fell to him to comfort and calm thousands of Christians who lived in fear of harassment, persecution, and even death. The affirmation "Keep Calm and Carry On" originated in a morale campaign in Great Britain in the build up to World War Two. These days, however, the phrase has become part of popular culture. This book describes ancient concepts that are ever new. Practical, in-depth, and thoroughly biblical, "How to Keep Calm and Carry On" will challenge your mind and comfort your heart.
Unfair Labor? is the first book to explore the economic impact of Native Americans who participated in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. By the late nineteenth century, tribal economic systems across the Americas were decimated, and tribal members were desperate to find ways to support their families and control their own labor. As U.S. federal policies stymied economic development in tribal communities, individual Indians found creative new ways to make a living by participating in the cash economy. Before and during the exposition, American Indians played an astonishingly broad role in both the creation and the collection of materials for the fair, and in a variety of jobs on and off the fairgrounds. While anthropologists portrayed Indians as a remembrance of the past, the hundreds of Native Americans who participated were carving out new economic pathways. Unfair Labor? breaks new ground by telling the stories of individual laborers at the fair, uncovering the roles that Indians played in the changing economic conditions of tribal peoples, and redefining their place in the American socioeconomic landscape.
Arizona has become a swing state in recent national elections, the source of controversial policies and policy proposals, and the home of well-known political personalities. In this new edition of Arizona Politics and Government, David R. Berman examines contemporary issues in a broad historical, comparative, and theoretical context to identify the mixture of ideas, activities, and events that have helped shape the essential character of the Arizona polity. Beginning with an overview of continuities and changes in Arizona politics, Berman then discusses more specific topics such as immigration and water issues, cultural wars, political extremism, voting rights, and political reform, as well as intergovernmental relations, judicial elections, the place of rural Arizona and organized labor in state politics, and the state’s treatment of Natives, Mexican Americans, and African Americans. Above all Berman considers the values, beliefs, and behavioral patterns reflected in the state’s political life that have fueled Arizonans’ quests for autonomy, democracy, and development.

In Bribed with Our Own Money David R. M. Beck analyzes the successes and failures of Indigenous nations’ opposition to federal policy in the 1950s and 1960s. Focusing on case studies from six Native nations, Beck recounts how the U.S. government coerced American Indian nations to accept termination of their political relationship with the United States by threatening to withhold money that belonged to the tribes. Termination was the continuation-and, federal officials hoped, the culmination-of more than a century of policy initiatives intended to end the political relationship between Indian tribal nations and the federal government. Termination was also intended to assimilate American Indian individuals into the country’s social and economic culture and to remove the remainder of reservation lands from federal trust. American Indians hoped to gain greater opportunities of self-governance and self-determination, but they wanted to do so under the protection of the federal trust relationship.Bribed with Our Own Money analyzes both successful and unsuccessful efforts of Native nations to oppose this policy within the larger context of long-standing federal abuse of tribal funds. It is the first book to view federal termination efforts grounded in bribery for what they were: a form of coercion.
