Sampling Theory

Sampling Theory

David G. Hankin; Michael S. Mohr; Kenneth B. Newman

Oxford University Press
2019
nidottu
Sampling theory considers how methods for selection of a subset of units from a finite population (a sample) affect the accuracy of estimates of descriptive population parameters (mean, total, proportion). Although a sound knowledge of sampling theory principles would seem essential for ecologists and natural resource scientists, the subject tends to be somewhat overlooked in contrast to other core statistical topics such as regression analysis, experimental design, and multivariate statistics. This introductory text aims to redress this imbalance by specifically targeting ecologists and resource scientists, and illustrating how sampling theory can be applied in a wide variety of resource contexts. The emphasis throughout is on design-based sampling from finite populations, but some attention is given to model-based prediction and sampling from infinite populations.^l Sampling Theory is an introductory textbook suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners in the fields of ecology, evolution, conservation biology, and natural resource sciences (including fisheries, wildlife, rangeland, ecology and forestry).
Toronto Edwardian

Toronto Edwardian

sidottu
Beginning his career as an independent architect in the mid-1870s, Frank Darling came to prominence as the principal of Darling & Pearson Architects, designing a plethora of delightful bank buildings in the early twentieth century. Darling’s work aligned with the national ambitions of his clients and gave shape to Britain’s global imperial project on Canadian soil. In Toronto Edwardian David Winterton positions Darling as a leading architectural figure of the era. He demonstrates that the Canadian Edwardian Grand Manner was not merely an architectural interlude: it was pivotal to the development of Canada’s cultural identity and of the possibility of a national architecture in the early twentieth century. Darling was the first Canadian architect with a truly national presence, with built projects in every province – over 360 known buildings – ranging from elaborate urban designs to prefabricated banks that rose up in many towns and villages west of Lake Superior. Winterton has drawn from institutional archives and consulted with local historians, heritage professionals, and scholars to meticulously reconstruct the story of Frank Darling and his work. First exploring biographical, cultural, and patronage contexts, then focusing on the design and construction of fine houses, academic buildings, banks, and even the country’s first skyscrapers, Toronto Edwardian features new and previously unpublished photographs that illuminate the firm’s considerable influence and provide a visual record of Darling’s approach to style. Toronto Edwardian richly illustrates the breadth of Darling’s architectural creation and compellingly articulates the Edwardian period’s importance to Canadian architecture.

Hadrosaurs

Hadrosaurs

David A. Eberth; Michael J. Benton

Indiana University Press
2014
sidottu
Hadrosaurs—also known as duck-billed dinosaurs—are abundant in the fossil record. With their unique complex jaws and teeth perfectly suited to shred and chew plants, they flourished on Earth in remarkable diversity during the Late Cretaceous. So ubiquitous are their remains that we have learned more about dinosaurian paleobiology and paleoecology from hadrosaurs than we have from any other group. In recent years, hadrosaurs have been in the spotlight. Researchers around the world have been studying new specimens and new taxa seeking to expand and clarify our knowledge of these marvelous beasts. This volume presents the results of an international symposium on hadrosaurs, sponsored by the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum, where scientists and students gathered to share their research and their passion for duck-billed dinosaurs. A uniquely comprehensive treatment of hadrosaurs, the book encompasses not only the well-known hadrosaurids proper, but also Hadrosaouroidea, allowing the former group to be evaluated in a broader perspective. The 36 chapters are divided into six sections—an overview, new insights into hadrosaur origins, hadrosaurid anatomy and variation, biogeography and biostratigraphy, function and growth, and preservation, tracks, and traces—followed by an afterword by Jack Horner.

Concise, engaging, and highly intuitive—this accessible guide equips you with an understanding of all the basic principles of forecasting Making accurate predictions about the economy has always been difficult, as F. A. Hayek noted when accepting his Nobel Prize in economics, but today forecasters have to contend with increasing complexity and unpredictable feedback loops. In this accessible and engaging guide, David Hendry, Michael Clements, and Jennifer Castle provide a concise and highly intuitive overview of the process and problems of forecasting. They explain forecasting concepts including how to evaluate forecasts, how to respond to forecast failures, and the challenges of forecasting accurately in a rapidly changing world. Topics covered include: What is a forecast? How are forecasts judged? And how can forecast failure be avoided? Concepts are illustrated using real-world examples including financial crises, the uncertainty of Brexit, and the Federal Reserve’s record on forecasting. This is an ideal introduction for university students studying forecasting, practitioners new to the field and for general readers interested in how economists forecast.

The simplest method of transferring data through the inputs or outputs of a silicon chip is to directly connect each bit of the datapath from one chip to the next chip. Once upon a time this was an acceptable approach. However, one aspect (and perhaps the only aspect) of chip design which has not changed during the career of the authors is Moore’s Law, which has dictated substantial increases in the number of circuits that can be manufactured on a chip. The pin densities of chip packaging technologies have not increased at the same pace as has silicon density, and this has led to a prevalence of High Speed Serdes (HSS) devices as an inherent part of almost any chip design. HSS devices are the dominant form of input/output for many (if not most) high-integration chips, moving serial data between chips at speeds up to 10 Gbps and beyond. Chip designers with a background in digital logic design tend to view HSS devices as simply complex digital input/output cells. This view ignores the complexity associated with serially moving billions of bits of data per second. At these data rates, the assumptions associated with digital signals break down and analog factors demand consideration. The chip designer who oversimplifies the problem does so at his or her own peril.

This is the largest seaweed, giant kelp (Macrocystis) is the fastest growing and most prolific of all plants found on earth. Growing from the seafloor and extending along the ocean surface in lush canopies, giant kelp provides an extensive vertical habitat in a largely two-dimensional seascape. It is the foundation for one of the most species-rich, productive, and widely distributed ecological communities in the world. Schiel and Foster's scholarly review and synthesis take the reader from Darwin's early observations to contemporary research, providing a historical perspective for the modern understanding of giant kelp evolution, biogeography, biology, and physiology. The authors furnish a comprehensive discussion of kelp species and forest ecology worldwide, with considerations of human uses and abuses, management and conservation, and the current and likely future impacts of global change. This volume promises to be the definitive treatise and reference on giant kelp and its forests for many years, and it will appeal to marine scientists and others who want a better appreciation and understanding of these wondrous forests of the sea.

With the remarkable expansion in the use of antipsychotics, concerns about their immediate, intermediate, and long-term adverse effects have intensified. Despite this, studies consistently show that monitoring of patients taking antipsychotics can be inadequate, haphazard, or worse. This book provides a comprehensive review of the adverse effects of this pharmacologically complex therapeutic class, covering all commonly used conventional and atypical agents. In the first section, each chapter provides background information about an adverse effect, reviews the evidence linking the effect to various antipsychotics, and provides specific detection and monitoring recommendations. The second section provides unique monitoring guides for each antipsychotic. The third section provides the clinician with a program to monitor patients over the long-term. By supporting rational treatment decisions and systematic adverse effect monitoring, Antipsychotics and Their Side Effects provides the clinician with the necessary information and tools for optimizing the safe and effective long-term use of antipsychotic drugs.

Transforming Catholicism

Transforming Catholicism

Lexington Books
2007
sidottu
The Constitution of Sacred Liturgy is widely regarded as the most significant among the sixteen documents produced by the Second Vatican Council. The constitution has radically redefined the methods and meanings of Catholic worship, including a shift from rote enactment of rituals, to the laity as a spiritual community. Transforming Catholicism offers the first social scientific analysis of these liturgical changes in worship and their implementations in local situations. Guided by a consistent theory of policy implementation, Michael J. McCallion and David R. Maines examine the growing emphasis placed on biblical interpretations of sacred meanings, interpretative homilies, and the production of mass in local languages. This book incorporates first-hand empirical data in studying the influence of professional liturgists on parish worship practices and the subsequent symbolic interactionist theories. Transforming Catholicism is a sophisticated and engaging read that will captivate seminary professors and those interested in policy analysis.
