Mexican Americans and the Environment

Mexican Americans and the Environment

Devon G. Pena

Mexican Americans have traditionally had a strong land ethic, believing that humans must respect la tierra because it is the source of la vida. As modern market forces exploit the earth, communities struggle to control their own ecological futures, and several studies have recorded that Mexican Americans are more impacted by environmental injustices than are other national-origin groups. In our countryside, agricultural workers are poisoned by pesticides, while farmers have lost ancestral lands to expropriation. And in our polluted inner cities, toxic wastes sicken children in their very playgrounds and homes. This book addresses the struggle for environmental justice, grassroots democracy, and a sustainable society from a variety of Mexican American perspectives. It draws on the ideas and experiences of people from all walks of life activists, farmworkers, union organizers, land managers, educators, and many others who provide a clear overview of the most critical ecological issues facing Mexican-origin people today. The text is organized to first provide a general introduction to ecology, from both scientific and political perspectives. It then presents an environmental history for Mexican-origin people on both sides of the border, showing that the ecologically sustainable Norteno land use practices were eroded by the conquest of El Norte by the United States. It finally offers a critique of the principal schools of American environmentalism and introduces the organizations and struggles of Mexican Americans in contemporary ecological politics. Devon Pena contrasts tenets of radical environmentalism with the ecological beliefs and grassroots struggles of Mexican-origin people, then shows how contemporary environmental justice struggles in Mexican American communities have challenged dominant concepts of environmentalism. Mexican Americans and the Environment is a didactically sound text that introduces students to the conceptual vocabularies of ecology, culture, history, and politics as it tells how competing ideas about nature have helped shape land use and environmental policies. By demonstrating that any consideration of environmental ethics is incomplete without taking into account the experiences of Mexican Americans, it clearly shows students that ecology is more than nature study but embraces social issues of critical importance to their own lives.

After a security guard is found dead and another wounded at the Children's Museum of Science and History in Norman, Oklahoma, Detective Monique Blue Hawk and her partner Chris Pierson are summoned to investigate. They find no fingerprints, no footprints, and no obvious means to enter the locked building. Monique discovers that a portion of an ancient and deformed skeleton had also been stolen from the neglected museum archives. Her uncle, the spiritual leader Leroy Bear Red Ears, concludes that the stolen remains are those of Hatak haksi, a witch and the matriarch of the Crow family, a group of shape-shifting Choctaws who plan to reestablish themselves as the powerful creatures they were when the tribe lived in Mississippi. Monique, Leroy, and Chris must stop the Crows, but to their dread, the entities have retreated to the dark and treacherous hollow in the center of Chalakwa Ranch. The murderous shape-shifters believe the enormous wild hogs, poisonous snakes, and other creatures of the hollow might form an adequate defense for Hatak haksi. But what no one counts on is the unexpected appearance and power of the Old Ones who guard the lands of the Choctaw afterlife. Blending tribal beliefs and myths into a modern context, The Hatak Witches continues the storyline of Choctaw cosmology and cultural survival that are prominent in Devon A. Mihesuah's award-winning novel, The Roads of My Relations.

For over a century, the African American author has faced the challenge of writing for a racially dual audience and their often divergent expectations. This book explores the author's cultural and literary dilemma, using dialogical insights to examine two contrasting approaches the author may take toward each audience. The result is a groundbreaking new literary theory that identifies four distinct types of African American literature and redefines the concept of double consciousness for the African American writer.

I applaud Devon Mihesuah for successfully confronting the literature of false portrayal and negative images of Indian people." Dr. Donald L. Fixico, Professor of History Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo (Shawnee, Sac & Fox, Creek, Seminole) "A good sourcebook for dispelling misconceptions and negative stereotypes about American Indians. These beliefs and attitudes exist and these statements are made in academic settings. It is fortunate that there are professors like Devon Mihesuah in classrooms to present the "other side", perhaps only once in the lifetime of some students..." Dr. Karen Swisher, Director, Center for Indian Education Arizona State University (Standing Rock Sioux) "This book will be a very useful reader for anyone truly trying to understand who American Indians really are. There is no other book on Indian images that provides the Indian "voice" that Devon maintains throughout the text.
The World's Common Sense Challenges

The World's Common Sense Challenges

Since some of life's, and the world's greatest challenges can be solved with common sense, what is common sense? If the answer does not jump out of your mind, you are not alone. None of the hundreds of those surveyed by the author were able to answer with a high degree of certainty. So, this begs the question, why do we all agree that common sense is extremely important, yet so few of us can explain what it is? Since it is such a commonly used phrase, and many have accused others of lacking in it, it is reasonable to expect that we would all be able to explain what it is. It is reasonable, also, to assume that those of us who use it, but cannot explain what it is, could be using it incorrectly. Once you examine this phrase, "common sense", within the context of this research, you may agree that it is virtually a scientific principle, and that if it governs our ideas, knowledge, reasoning, and actions, it would guarantee that we would perform at our best. You may also conclude that common sense is far superior to academic learning and that, if it is applied, it can be the most effective tool for shedding light on all of life's challenges. Common sense is not a list of pronouncements to follow, but a logical process of thinking that lifted Western civilisation from its worse period of regression between 500 and 1000 AD, and is therefore instrumental to our current stage of advancement. Yet, despite this, we are far from being at our best, because we do not consistently use common sense to decipher our daily life challenges. This book takes the reader on a journey of how to navigate some of life's greatest challenges, and demonstrates how we can solve some of our seemingly intractable problems with the effective application of common sense.
