"El joven rey" fue el primer cuaderno de poes a escrito por su autor mientras era estudiante de la Escuela de Letras de la Universidad de La Habana, en dos d as sucesivos separados por dos a os: el 14 de mayo de 1970 y el 14 de mayo de 1972. En copias mecanografiadas, fue conocido en la Facultad de Humanidades de dicha universidad, hasta ser seleccionado para aparecer en el primer n mero de una revista universitaria que tendr a por t tulo "Colina", en alusi n a la colina del barrio habanero de El Vedado donde se levanta la Universidad de La Habana. La censura "revolucionaria" imperante en Cuba durante la d cada de 1970 impidi la aparici n de la revista y, consecuentemente, la del poema, que el autor incluir a despu s en otras ediciones de sus libros.

La extra a fiesta fue el primer libro de poes a de Emilio de Armas, publicado en 1981 gracias al premio 13 de Marzo de 1979, convocado por el Departamento de Extensi n Universitaria de la Universidad de La Habana. Apareci durante el llamado "Quinquenio Gris" (o m s bien "Decenio Negro") de la literatura cubana, marcado por la represi n ideol gica y pol tica. El jurado lo integraron los poetas Eliseo Diego y ngel Augier, y el cr tico literario Jos Prats Sariol. La modesta edici n original, con un pr logo de Eliseo Diego, fue de escasos ejemplares que nunca llegaron a las librer as, y en la actualidad es casi imposible de encontrar. Los 21 poemas que integraron la ltima secci n de aquel libro, Semejanzas, se escribieron en 1975 y aparecen en esta edici n, realizada y revisada por el autor para conmemora los 35 a os de aquel premio, que fue tal vez el primer reconocimiento a una poes a cubana escrita por j venes que no estaban dispuestos a comprometerse con las exigencias ideol gicas y est ticas de la burocracia cultural del pa s.

Concebido a la manera del lbum de recortes que alg n meticuloso aficionado al b isbol cubano hubiera podido integrar en 1971, este cuaderno se propone reunir la informaci n estad stica y las im genes con que la prensa cubana de aquella poca present a los aficionados del pa s el XIX Campeonato Mundial de B isbol Amateur, en que Cuba participar a en 1971. Hoy aquellas p ginas, impresas en el m s pobre papel "gaceta", est n en peligro de perderse. Las "postalitas" con los retratos y los r cords de los jugadores, que en la Cuba anterior a 1959 hab an sido una tradici n inspirada en las "baseball cards" estadounidenses, pr cticamente desaparecieron, hasta su tard a manifestaci n en las p ginas que aqu se reproducen. A partir de dos deteriorados ejemplares del " lbum 40 Estrellas", que el semanario infantil "Pionero" distribuy gratuitamente entre los ni os cubanos, aqu se reproducen facsimilarmente las p ginas de aquella tirada, escogiendo en cada caso las de m s calidad, las menos da adas. Las roturas se han reparado digitalmente, pero las manchas se han conservado, en testimonio de los muchos a os y de las muchas manos por las que han de haber pasado estas hojas. El cuaderno se completa con los datos estad sticos del XIX Campeonato Mundial de B isbol Amateur.
