If you think you know F. Scott Fitzgerald, this book will come as a delightfully intimate surprise. Fitzgerald scholar Dave Page has meticulously scoured the letters, scrapbooks, and diaries of the great American novelist, offering a fresh look at the young writer and his St. Paul friends and neighbors. Readers will learn about-and recognize-the sources for the characters and the places he wrote about-as well as understand why St. Paul so inspired him. F. Scott Fitzgerald fans already know and love some of the enchanting and mischievous characters that populate his early novels and short stories. There was Bernice, who bobbed not only her hair but her cousins as well. And those pranksters who crashed the wrong party disguised as an exotic camel! And then there was the poor Southern belle who almost froze to death in the St. Paul Winter Carnivals ice palace. Many of Fitzgeralds characters and tales were based on real people and events from the young writers life, set against the socioeconomic times of the Jazz Age, where he perceived a great gulf between the haves and the have-nots in his hometown. F. Scott Fitzgerald in Minnesota combines insights into the writers early career with the rich architectural history of St. Paul, taking readers into the homes and places he frequented. Pages well-researched analysis is complemented by Jeff Kruegers sensitive color photographs of homes still standing, and supplemented by fascinating historic photographs of lives well lived in old St. Paul.

A comprehensive study of the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald, related in two-year chapters by twenty-three leading writers on the Jazz Age author “There never was a good biography of a novelist,” F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in The Crack-Up. “There couldn’t be. He is too many people, if he’s any good.” Fitzgerald, a good novelist by any measure, has tested this challenge to the biographer’s art. A new star illuminating the literary scene; a chronicler of the Jazz Age in all its brilliance and tarnish; a romantic symbol of the American century; an acute observer of society’s best and worst, and of his own star-crossed career; a midlife burnout at forty-four, leaving an unfinished masterpiece in his wake-he was a man of many aspects, a writer whose complexity and multitudes this composite biography finally aptly portrays. Bringing together twenty-three leading writers and scholars on Fitzgerald, each focusing on two years of his life, this volume takes its cue from Henry James’s remark, cited by preeminent Fitzgerald biographer Scott Donaldson: “The whole of anything is never told; you can only take what groups together.” F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Composite Biography presents a new way of “grouping together” biographical material and perspectives, considering from various angles the author's best-known works as well as understudied writings, including neglected stories and forays into autobiography such as “What I Think and Feel at 25” and “How to Live on $36,000 a Year.” The glamor and fame that made F. Scott and Zelda mythic figures of their time appear here alongside the personal experiences that he occasionally included in his writing: the beginnings as well as the poignant end; the literary relationships that informed and framed his work, set against solitary effort, fame, and failures. This remarkable study of F. Scott Fitzgerald reflects the multifaceted whole of a “life in many parts” in new and revelatory ways. Joe Wilder was a man for all seasons, an individual who will forever be an inveterate achiever, a man who has made this a better world by setting a high standard for others to follow. The New York Times hailed him as a "Renaissance Man." In this autobiography he encapsulated a half century as a committed doctor highlighting the powerful forces and actions which take place in a major hospital setting. This book combines the compassion of this exceptional and surgeon and his forceful paintings from inside the operating room to paintings of sports and still life paintings representing the beauty of nature. He brings to bear skills perfected as a surgeon, acute powers of observation, knowledge of anatomy, concentration and a delft bold hand. Joe was a "healer" every minute of his life and that is how he wanted to be remembered. He never refused help to anyone regardless of their ability to pay. He saved thousands of lives in the operating room and taught his skills to the thousands of surgeons he trained during his thirty five years as a Chief and Professor of Surgery. He said that he owed much of his success in life to his parents and to his education at Dartmouth where he became an All- American Lacrosse player establishing records that have never been broken. Joe was the all-time highest goal scorer per game against all opponents and in 1987 was inducted into The Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He was awarded many honors in his lifetime including the Markle Award, The Dartmouth College Presidential Medal for Leadership in Art and Science; he was honored as "Man of The Year" at The Yankee Stadium in New York along with Willie Mays and was elected to membership in the Dartmouth College Phi Beta Kappa. Joe Wilder understood what Hippocrates meant when he wrote "Wherever the art of medicine is loved there is also the love of humanity". This ethical statement is in effect the motto that explains the motivation of his surgeon paintings and this autobiography.
