Re-Creating Primordial Time

Re-Creating Primordial Time offers a new perspective on the Maya codices, documenting the extensive use of creation mythology and foundational rituals in the hieroglyphic texts and iconography of these important manuscripts. Focusing on both pre-Columbian codices and early colonial creation accounts, Vail and Hernández show that in spite of significant cultural change during the Postclassic and Colonial periods, the mythological traditions reveal significant continuity, beginning as far back as the Classic period. Remarkable similarities exist within the Maya tradition, even as new mythologies were introduced through contact with the Gulf Coast region and highland central Mexico. Vail and Hernández analyze the extant Maya codices within the context of later literary sources such as the Books of Chilam Balam, the Popol Vuh, and the Códice Chimalpopoca to present numerous examples highlighting the relationship among creation mythology, rituals, and lore. Compiling and comparing Maya creation mythology with that of the Borgia codices from highland central Mexico, Re-Creating Primordial Time is a significant contribution to the field of Mesoamerican studies and will be of interest to scholars of archaeology, linguistics, epigraphy, and comparative religions alike.

For forty years, as New York’s Lower East Side went from disinvested to gentrified, residents lived with a wound at the heart of the neighborhood, a wasteland of vacant lots known as the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA). Most of the buildings on the fourteen-square-block area were condemned in 1967, displacing thousands of low-income people of color with the promise that they would soon return to new housing—housing that never came. Over decades, efforts to keep out affordable housing sparked deep-rooted enmity and stalled development, making SPURA a dramatic study of failed urban renewal, as well as a microcosm epitomizing the greatest challenges faced by American cities since World War II. Artist and urban scholar Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani was invited to enter this tense community to support a new approach to planning, which she accepted using collaboration, community organizing, public history, and public art. Having engaged her students at The New School in a multi-year collaboration with community activists, the exhibitions and guided tours of her Layered SPURA project provided crucial new opportunities for dialogue about the past, present, and future of the neighborhood. Simultaneously revealing the incredible stories of community and activism at SPURA, and shedding light on the importance of collaborative creative public projects, Contested City bridges art, design, community activism, and urban history. This is a book for artists, planners, scholars, teachers, cultural institutions, and all those who seek to collaborate in new ways with communities.

This cookbook features recipes for German-Jewish cuisine as it existed in Germany prior to World War II, and as refugees later adapted it in the United States and elsewhere. Because these dishes differ from more familiar Jewish food, they will be a discovery for many people. With a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, this indispensable collection of recipes includes numerous soups, both chilled and hot; vegetable dishes; meats, poultry, and fish; fruit desserts; cakes; and the German version of challah, Berches. These elegant and mostly easy-to-make recipes range from light summery fare to hearty winter foods. The Gropmans have honored the original recipes, while updating their format to reflect contemporary standards of recipe writing. Six recipe chapters offer easy-to-follow instructions for weekday meals, Shabbos and holiday meals, sausage and cold cuts, vegetables, coffee and cake, and core recipes basic to the preparation of German-Jewish cuisine. Some of these recipes come from friends and relatives of the authors; others have been culled from interviews, prewar German-Jewish cookbooks, nineteenth-century American cookbooks, community cookbooks, memoirs, or historical and archival material. The introduction explains the basics of Jewish diet (kosher law). The historical chapter that follows sets the stage by describing German-Jewish cuisine in Germany and then offering a look at life in the vibrant émigré community of Washington Heights in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. With more than fifty drawings and photographs that show the cooking process as well as the delicious final product, this cookbook will appeal to readers curious about ethnic cooking and how it has evolved, and to anyone interested in exploring delicious new recipes.

This book sets out to answer the call for the historic turn in organization studies through the development of an alternative methodology for history, one that we call ANTi-History. In responding to that call, this book contributes generally to the broad critique of the ahistorical nature of management and organization theory, but more specifically it sets out to address the need for more historicized research and in particular, alternative ways of writing and conceptualizing history. The application and theoretical development of ANTi-History is explored through the performance of a series of histories of Pan American Airways.

Writing has been a direct connection from me to God. When a friend saw my poetry book she started reading it and said she couldn't put it down. She encouraged me to do something with it; I was seventeen then. Now that I have several more poetry books, I prayed and feel that this is what the Lord wants me to do. It's one of my greatest passions, next to ministry and cooking. I pray this book ministers to you and helps you heal, restore, encourage, motivate and captures attention. Let the words sink and revive you, so that after you're done reading this book, it will feel like you have just taken a breath of fresh air. There is something in here for everyone. If you enjoy reading "A Word Fitly Spoken", there is more to come. One thing I have noticed about poetry is writers create it when they're in deep depression and those poems end up making you feel the same way you felt when you started reading them. So I have decided I would never end a poem or song on a down-beat, but always on a high note. Being the praise and worship leader, I find that sometimes in order to get to the next level, we have to encourage ourselves in the Lord. As you read my book, please don't just browse it -- think and ponder on it and remember it. Let the joy of the Lord be your strength. There's something in here for every mood I'm in, and if you can apply it to your life it will help you just the way it helped me. I hope and pray you enjoy it and will be looking for my other books. Thank you for supporting me and my dreams
