Czech-born refugee Karel Reisz (1926-2002) is widely regarded as one of the seminal figures in post-war British cinema. Along with Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson, Reisz was a founder member of the independent Free Cinema ‘movement’ which attacked the parochial middle-class values of home-grown studio product with a vigorous commitment to everyday working-class subject matter and a poetically charged film style. This was immediately recognisable in the aesthetic of the international success of Reisz’s first feature, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). As the import of Free Cinema rapidly dissipated during the ‘Swinging London’ era, Reisz confronted the changing cultural mores of the 1960s and 1970s with a series of ambivalent films that critique the anarchic free spirit of the times, including Morgan (1966), Isadora (1968), The Gambler (1974) and Dog Soldiers (1978).Drawing on Reisz’s early film criticism for Sequence and Sight and Sound, as well as interdisciplinary methodologies, this first career-length study explores Reisz’s personal brand of character-based realism, offering the spectator a privileged insight into an artist’s developing response to subjective and historical dislocation. The book should thus prove invaluable to film scholars, cultural historians and the Reisz aficionado.

Designers' Guide to Eurocode 3: Design of Steel Buildings

This series of Designers’ Guides to the Eurocodes provides comprehensive guidance in the form of design aids, indications for the most convenient design procedures and worked examples. The books also include background information to aid the designer in understanding the reasoning behind and the objectives of the codes. All of the individual guides work in conjunction with the Designers’ Guide to EN1990: Basis of Structural Design. Eurocode 3 covers many forms of steel construction and provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date set of design guidance currently available. Throughout, this book concentrates on the most commonly encountered aspects of structural steel design, with an emphasis on the situation in buildings. Much of its content is therefore devoted to the provisions of Part 1.1 General rules and rules for buildings of EN 1993: Design of steel structures, however, this is supplemented by material on joints (Part 1.8), cold-formed design (Part 1.3), and loading (EN 1990 and EN 1991). For each of the principal aspects covered, the book provides background to the structural behaviour, explanation of the codified treatment including departure from existing practice (BS 5950) and numerous worked examples. The second edition of this popular guide has been fully updated for revisions to the code and the UK National Annex for EN 1993-1-1 (UK NA to BS EN 1993-1-1); this guide should serve as the primary point of reference for designing steel structures to Eurocode 3. This guide is essential reading for civil and structural engineerscode-drafting committeesclientsstructural-design studentspublic authorities

The list of excerpts below gives only a partial look into the stories. For a more detailed look at the stories, please visit Brian website at Shadowcasted Realities. So please continue on, I welcome you to my world where Nightmares become Reality and even the good have their bad days. But before you dive into the depths of the MultiVersal Void of my mind, let me at least give you a small clue to what you're about to experience. Ready, here you go: In Reborn in Blood (suspense horror), Rexington Bach must fight for not only his sanity and freedom, but the lives of his family who are at the mercy of his own adopted son, Andrew. What is it about this adopted one that makes him such a challenge you may ask. Let's just say he has a certain thirst for something that the Mortal world wishes that they could go without in life. Pigtails (suspense) is a story that returns you to eerie ways of school. Well, at least to a ten-year reunion, but before Kelly, Steve, Sela and Henisolo can even start the party off with a bang of joy; the unthinkable happens and sets the stage for a fall. Before the night of the reunion is over, a score will be settled that will make the bullies of the world realize; Torture of the weak is fun while it lasts, but revenge lasts forever and can only be bested by death itself. What is the Assassin's Tragedy (fantasy) you may ask. It's something that many, Maybe even someone like yourself, takes for granted, but believe that they feel all too often. And when they believe they feel it, it may be nothing more than a glow of falseness in their lives. Am I confusing you? Good. Enter the world of the past and follow the trail of the assassin named Emerald as he relays his life to a man known only as, Delroy. At the end of his story, you'll know the answer, but will it be worth it? The Room (horror): a rumored place where heaven, hell and the plane of earth collide and become one, but for one man, all of this is a fictional child's story. To prove his belief to all he knows, he now enters this place of prophesied hell and challenges all that he has heard and believes, but he will soon learn that even the strangest of tales could possibly have some truth to them. No matter how small or crazy they may seem. Total Insanity (mystery horror) is with us all, but who is truly insane and who is the totality of it all? Within this story, you will meet a murderer that kills like no other as he begs to his God and to the man bent on capturing him; Detective Matt McGhannon. With his friend, who no one else seems to care about or even notice, Matt plans on stopping the madness before it reaches its ending and swallows his grip on his own personal insanity. In For You (suspense horror), you will meet the race of our salvation and their search to find the one who will protect their secret and continue their line within the Order. Unfortunately, only two remain. Paul and his mother, who search with desperation for the single individual who can carry on their line as the evil race known as the Vipree hunt them down to claim their extinction. So what really makes this race so important. If they die, so do we Finally, in Reborn in Blood II (horror), the son of Rabjohanus learns of his place here and of another that to him is nothing short of an idol. Now, sit back, relax and pray. Oh yes, pray. For once you turn the page and begin to read what is contained within, you will be taken from this place and into another. A place where the imagination has a darkness that is ready to take you from the light and abandon you. But don't let this scare you. Just remember, it's all in my imagination. Or is it?
Germany's Foreign Policy of Reconciliation

Germany's Foreign Policy of Reconciliation

Lily Gardner Feldman

Rowman Littlefield Publishers
2012
sidottu
Since World War II, Germany has confronted its own history to earn acceptance in the family of nations. Lily Gardner Feldman draws on the literature of religion, philosophy, social psychology, law and political science, and history to understand Germany's foreign policy with its moral and pragmatic motivations and to develop the concept of international reconciliation. Germany's Foreign Policy of Reconciliation traces Germany's path from enmity to amity by focusing on the behavior of individual leaders, governments, and non-governmental actors. The book demonstrates that, at least in the cases of France, Israel, Poland, and Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic, Germany has gone far beyond banishing war with its former enemies; it has institutionalized active friendship. The German experience is now a model of its own, offering lessons for other cases of international reconciliation. Gardner Feldman concludes with an initial application of German reconciliation insights to the other principal post–World War II pariah, as Japan expands its relations with China and South Korea.

Katy Gardner’s account of her fifteen-month stay in the small Bangladeshi village of Talukpur has become a classic study of rural life in South Asia. Through a series of beautifully crafted narratives, the villagers and their stories are brought vividly to life and the author’s role as an outsider sensitively conveyed in her descriptions of the warm friendships she makes. Above all Songs at the River's Edge is written from a deep respect of Bangladesh and its country.

What happened when Chevron, a multinational mining company, opened a gas plant right next to densely populated villages in rural Bangladesh? This book reveals contradictory ways that local people attempt to connect to, and are disconnected by, foreign capital. Commentators on the situation have different frameworks, whether of dispossession and scarcity, the success of Corporate Social Responsibility, or imperialist exploitation and corruption. Yet as Gardner argues, what really matters in the struggles over resources is which of these stories are heard, and the power of those who tell them. Based on the narratives of dispossessed land owners, urban activists, mining officials and the rural landless, Discordant Development shows the real picture behind the effect multinational capital has on indigenous communities.

Western aid is in decline. Non-traditional development actors from the developing countries and elsewhere are in the ascendant. A new set of global economic and political processes are shaping the twenty-first century. This book engages with nearly two decades of continuity and change in the development industry. In particular, it argues that while the world of international development has expanded since the 1990s, it has become more rigidly technocratic. The authors insist on a focus upon the core anthropological issues surrounding poverty and inequality, and thus sharply criticise what are perceived as problems in the field. Anthropology and Development is a completely rewritten edition of the best-selling and critically acclaimed Anthropology, Development and the Post-Modern Challenge (1996). It serves as both an innovative reformulation of the field, as well as a textbook for many undergraduate and graduate courses at leading international universities.

Traditionally, Devon was seen as unimportant because of its distance from London and its bad roads – lesser, it was thought, than the historical capital or culturally rich home counties. How wrong could non-Devonians have been? The county is all about its splendid prehistoric and historic remains, its myths, and its maritime legacy. That's not to forget the tenacious people who have lived there for thousands of years: wreckers, misbehaving clergymen, eccentrics and determined women who bucked the trends. From stories of early man right up to modern times and every period in-between, Devon (and this book) has it all.

Carriages pulled by headless horses, a ghostly Viking longship poised to reinvade, modern-day people transported momentarily back to the brutal Middle Ages and spooky creatures so horrible that catching sight of them could kill – no wonder Exeter is considered to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. As well as looking at ghostly sightings in the historic centre, Haunted Exeter uncovers little-known, yet still spine chilling events in other areas of the city. Extensively researched by a local professional historian and tour guide using previously unpublished material, this book will appeal to both serious ghost hunters and those who simply fancy a fright!
