Ft. Benning and the Infantry School produced thousands of officers for the Vietnam War as it did in World War II and the Korean War. Scumbags, the Making of an American Officer recounts the experiences of John Oreskovich in Ft. Benning's Infantry Officer Candidate School Class 4-72. This class, which graduated 12 July 1972, sent 126 commissioned officers into the United States Army. He would later return to Ft. Benning to go through Airborne School, after attending Air Defense Officer training at Ft. Bliss. This book recounts those days of intense preparatory training, written with a touch of humor and sometimes distain for what was endured: the countless push-ups, running everywhere for six months in combat boots, and the attention to detail piled on by the ever-present tactical officers. Attention to detail was a course in verbal harassment applied by the TACS of 51st Company: "hey you, Scumbag" or "you Scumbag..."

"Abandoned in Berlin" is a true mystery story that explores what happens to a block of apartments in Berlin and the Jewish family that owned it during the 1930's, and the restitution efforts that take place in the 1950's. The leading characters are a widow and her two teenage daughters, with the story narrated in the third person on behalf of Hilda, the only child of the youngest daughter, and currently a resident of Novato, Marin County, California. Names are hidden or disguised to try and protect those involved. The novel begins in June 2016 when Hilda visits Berlin on an organized tour and discovers the property in which her mother lived as an adolescent. Through diligent research of earlier times, a tale of discrimination, fear, and perseverance emerges, followed by efforts to seek justice through the German legal system once the War is over. The reader can decide whether justice was served and how forgotten facts can twist people's decisions.

Abandoned in Berlin invites the reader to decide if anti-Semitism in Germany ended after the war or was simply concealed by a new set of West German laws. The story uncovers the history of a prestigious block of Jewish-owned apartments in West Berlin, expropriated under National Socialism at the end of March 1936. The leading characters are a widow and her two teenage daughters, with the story narrated in the third person by Hilda, the only child of the youngest daughter, who currently lives in Novato, northern California. Uncovering the family history begins during June 2016 when Hilda visits Berlin to discover the home where her mother lived as a child and teenager. Through diligent research and the help of people and organizations in Berlin, Britain, the United States, and Israel, a story of persecution, discrimination, courage, and survival emerges. Important events are exposed that begin in December 1929 when the father of the family dies suddenly of natural causes, and leaves his wife to bring up the two adolescent daughters and manage the apartment business in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district of Berlin. The youngest girl legally inherits a share of the property, but because she is under age-21 and has no father, she is placed under the "care" of a Nazi Guardianship Court during late 1933. As a consequence, the Court controls all financial matters affecting the property. Slowly its requirements squeeze Hilda's family out of their home and rental business, and then out of Germany. Not until during the early 1950s can the survivors pursue restitution under newly-created West German jurisprudence. What happens at this time is described in Abandoned in Berlin.
