Putin's Third Term as Russia's President, 2012-18
This book provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of Putin’s third term as Russia’s president. It covers political, international relations, economic and social issues, and provides a balanced assessment of Putin’s successes and failures. These include the conflict in Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea, scandals associated with the Olympics, Russia’s increasing involvement with Asia, including with the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, and shifts in the economy away from huge reliance on energy resources. The book sets Putin’s activities as president in their wider context, discussing his overall popularity, the weakness of potential opposition and the development of the Russian Federation as a relatively new state.

Much has rightly been written about the physiological and psychological symptoms, known as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suffered by combat veterans, and their treatment. Much less has been written about the moral, spiritual and existential pain that soldiers experience as a consequence of carrying through the stated purpose of war for the common soldier - kill the enemy until the war is won. Based on his 20+ years' experience of treating combat veterans, Dr Larry Dewey explores the war trauma and life adaptation of combatants over two decades of intensive treatment. He addresses moral, spiritual and existential issues while also attending to the important physiological and psychological symptoms. Using case material, thoughts, experiences and, literally, the words of 65 veterans of various wars, he portrays in depth and with meaningful detail the process of successful treatment and the eventual positive adaptation for these veterans. The volume explores the deep pain and burden of killing and the role of propaganda and love in starting and maintaining war. Through the veterans' stories the author portrays the personal war of the ordinary combatant and the burden of guilt, grief and pain they often carry afterwards. The second part tackles the actual healing process, and part three explores the concepts of sin, confession, mercy, forgiveness, redemption and love, and how veterans have used them in aiding their own recovery from war's grief and moral pain. War and Redemption provides an invaluable tool in the understanding and treatment of PTSD for therapists, veterans and their families. It will also be a fascinating and valuable resource for all those interested in PTSD more generally.

The Mood Elevator Take Charge of Your Feelings, Become a Better You We all ride the Mood Elevator up and down every day. How well we do it impacts our relationship, our personal effectiveness, our career and our experience of life. Most people take that ride for granted and don't think it can be influenced. But what if we knew the right buttons to push to move to the top of the Mood Elevator. Wouldn't it be useful if there were proven ways to make visits to the lower floors less frequent and less intense? In this very practical guide, Larry Senn provides an operating manual to keep you out of the emotional basement. He shows how to recognize when you've become so accustomed to being stuck on a lower floor-depressed, stressed, anxious, judgmental-you don't even realize it and what to do to interrupt those negative thought patterns and start going up again. He urges us to cultivate mental attitudes like curiosity and gratitude that will keep us on the higher floors and explains how to quiet the mind and nurture positive thoughts without succumbing to Pollyannaish denial. And as someone who took up triathalons at the age of seventy, he speaks from experience when he emphasizes the inseparable connection between physical health and mental health. Through Senn's decades of work as a consultant, the Mood Elevator has been enthusiastically embraced by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. It symbolizes our moment-to-moment experience of life, encompassing a wide range of feelings. Together, these emotions play a major role in defining the quality of our lives and relationships and our effectiveness on the job. By sharing his work with a wider audience, Senn hopes to help all of us live life at our best.

His real name is not "Poppa John." His life has been built upon a variety of disguises. Close to seventy, wise, crotchety, troubled, outspoken, he is one of those elusive individuals whose very shifts and turnings serve to make him more himself and entirely unique. Compressed, music-like, lit with humor, "Poppa John "is a small book of awesome content and dimension.

Forty years after the suicide of his best friend's father, a writer revisits the tragedy and tries to unravel the mystery behind one man's inexplicable actions on that icy January day in 1961. Through his own recollections and his fiction-sometimes impossible to separate-he attempts to make sense of a senseless act and, in the process, to examine his youth, his connection to his best friend, Gene, and the enigma of Marie, a beautiful girl whose heart once belonged to both of them and whose spell still lingers through the decades. Spare, haunting, lyrical, Sundown, Yellow Moon is a piercing study of love and betrayal, grief and desire, youth and remembrance. Larry Watson not only brings to life a distinct period in history but, most affectingly, reveals the interplay of memory, secrets, and the passage of time. Praise for Sundown, Yellow Moon "Watson succeeds impressively, especially in deepening our understanding of first love."-Alan Cheuse, Chicago Tribune "A marvelous evocation of a time and place and of high school existence when it was considerably less ferocious than it is today . . . Sundown, Yellow Moon] twitches aside the curtain to reveal the menace and mendacity lurking behind placid and mundane lives."-Minneapolis Star Tribune " An] oddly heartbreaking story: allowed to run amok, the past becomes a monster capable of devouring the present."-Booklist "Larry Watson takes the less-traveled roads, through landscapes and heartscapes vaguely familiar, intensely poetic and always jangling. . . . He has established himself as one of the leading poetic realists, painting his stories across the canvas of interiors: small-town America and the human heart."-San Jose Mercury News, on Orchard

For several decades, bacteria have served as model systems to describe the life p- cesses of growth and metabolism. In addition, it is well recognized that prokaryotes have contributed greatly to the many advances in the areas of ecology, evolution, and biotechnology. This understanding of microorganisms is based on studies of members from both theBacteria andArchaea domains. With each issue of the various scienti?c publications, new characteristics of prokaryotic cells are being reported and it is - portant to place these insights in the context of the appropriate physiological processes. Structural and Functional Relationships in Prokaryotes describes the fundamental physiological processes for members of the Archaea and Bacteria domains. The - ganization of the book re?ects the emphasis that I have used in my 30 years of teaching a course of bacterial physiology. The philosophy used in the preparation of this book is to focus on the fundamental features of prokaryotic physiology and to use these features as the basis for comparative physiology. Even though diverse phenotypes have evolved from myriad genetic possibilities, these prokaryotes display considerable functional similarity and support the premise that there is a unity of physiology in the prokaryotes. The variations observed in the chemical structures and biochemical p- cesses are important in contributing to the persistence of microbial strains in a speci?c environment.

There are many books on various aspects of nonparametric inference such as density estimation, nonparametric regression, bootstrapping, and wavelets methods. But it is hard to ?nd all these topics covered in one place. The goal of this text is to provide readers with a single book where they can ?nd a brief account of many of the modern topics in nonparametric inference. The book is aimed at master’s-level or Ph. D. -level statistics and computer science students. It is also suitable for researchersin statistics, machine lea- ing and data mining who want to get up to speed quickly on modern n- parametric methods. My goal is to quickly acquaint the reader with the basic concepts in many areas rather than tackling any one topic in great detail. In the interest of covering a wide range of topics, while keeping the book short, I have opted to omit most proofs. Bibliographic remarks point the reader to references that contain further details. Of course, I have had to choose topics to include andto omit, the title notwithstanding. For the mostpart,I decided to omit topics that are too big to cover in one chapter. For example, I do not cover classi?cation or nonparametric Bayesian inference. The book developed from my lecture notes for a half-semester (20 hours) course populated mainly by master’s-level students. For Ph. D.
