Corporate Communications

Corporate Communications

Lars Thøger Christensen; Mette Morsing; George Cheney

SAGE Publications Inc
2008
sidottu
The field of corporate communications describes the practices organizations use to communicate as coherent corporate `bodies'. Drawing on the metaphor of the body and on a variety of theories and disciplines the text challenges the idealized notion that organizations can and should communicate as unified wholes. The authors pose important questions such as: - Where does the central idea of corporate communications come from? - What are the underlying assumptions of most corporate communications practices? - What are the organizational and ethical challenges of attempting truly `corporate' communication? Clearly written with international vignettes and executive briefings, this book shows that in a complex world the management of communication needs to embrace multiple opinions and voices. Rewarding readers with a deeper understanding of corporate communications, the text will be a `must read' for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars, in the arenas of corporate communications, organizational communication, employee relations, marketing, public relations and corporate identity management. Practitioners in these areas will be provoked to re-examine their assumptions and habits.

Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking, and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way
Lars Mytting's Norwegian Wood, a full-color practical book about the art and craft of handling wood for heating, is a gift-ready international bestseller. "You don't need to have a wood-burning stove or fireplace to be captivated by the craft and lore surrounding a Stone Age method of creating heat." ―Boston Globe Norwegian Wood provides useful advice on the hows and whys of taking care of your heating needs, but it's also a thoughtful attempt to understand man's age-old predilection for stacking wood and passion for open fires. Chapters include: The ColdThe ForestThe ToolsThe Chopping BlockThe WoodpileThe SeasoningThe StoveThe Fire The author, Lars Mytting, writes, "The factual material in this book represents the distilled wisdom of encounters with people who are passionate about wood, enthusiasts as well as professional researchers. I have benefitted greatly from my conversations with experts in the fields of combustion and silviculture. . . . Along the way I've tried out most of the techniques I've been introduced to. I've dried finely chopped oak in our kitchen oven, struggled to build a beehive woodpile, miscalculated the trajectory of a felled pine. And I've been on a quest to discover the soul of the wood fire." With his help, you'll begin your quest to discover the joys of wood and wood fire. An intriguing window into Scandinavian culture, the book also features interesting facts and anecdotes and inspired prose. The US edition is a fully updated version of the Norwegian original and includes an appendix of US-based resources and contacts.

The engrossing epic novel--a #1 bestseller in Norway--of a young woman whose fate plays out against her village's mystical church bells--now in paperback As long as people could remember, the stave church's bells had rung over the isolated village of Butangen, Norway. Cast in memory of conjoined twins, the bells are said to ring on their own in times of danger. In 1879, young pastor Kai Schweigaard moves to the village, where young Astrid Hekne yearns for a modern life. She sees a way out on the arm of the new pastor, who needs a tie to the community to cull favor for his plan for the old stave church, with its pagan deity effigies and supernatural bells. When the pastor makes a deal that brings an outsider, a sophisticated German architect, into their world, the village and Astrid are caught between past and future, as dark forces come into play. Lars Mytting, bestselling author of Norwegian Wood, brings his deep knowledge of history, carpentry, fishing, and stave churches to this compelling historical novel, an international bestseller sold in 12 countries. With its broad-canvas narrative about the intersection of religion, superstition, and duty, The Bell in the Lake is an irresistible story of ancient times and modern challenges, by a powerful international voice.

The second novel in bestselling and award-winning author Lars Mytting's powerful and compelling Sister Bells trilogy, The Reindeer Hunters is an epic, moving, and gloriously told historical novel following The Bell in the Lake, an Indie Next pick. Set in fictional Butangen, Norway, where the story of the conjoined twin sisters Halfrid and Gunhild Hekne provides the mythical and mystical undergirding, The Reindeer Hunters unfolds around the extraordinary tapestry that portrays the sisters' vision of Doomsday. After their death in 1613, the tapestry was given to the village church and lost at some point over the centuries. The year is 1903. Twenty-two years after the events of The Bell in The Lake, Astrid Hekne's son, Jehans, is now a young man. Driven out by his family, he lives on a homestead in the mountains near the village of Butangen, where he relishes the freedom of his life apart, fishing and hunting for his livelihood. One August morning, Jehans kills a massive reindeer, and at the same moment encounters an enigmatic hunter . . . At the new church in Butangen, Pastor Kai Schweigaard is living with the consequences of his past betrayal--arranging the dismantling and sale of the stave church--including deaths and the loss of the church's mystical sister bells. Kai becomes obsessed with finding the ancient tapestry woven by the conjoined sisters in whose memory the bells were cast, with the hope that the tapestry will bring him redemption. Despite the unraveling legends from the past that continue to haunt these people, they must figure out how to look to the future. A magnificent story about love, sorrow, and courage, as well as taming waterfalls and the first flash of electric light in the village night, The Reindeer Hunters is a grand and thrilling novel about what it takes to live in and embrace a new era.

This is the fascinating story about the King of Matches, Ivar Kreuger, the Swedish genius, who pioneered the usage of corporate nance and management, international law, politics and nance, etc., for the establishment and management of corporations, their subsidiaries and divisions, on an international scale. During and after WWI, many countries had nancial problems, and turned to the big international banks for help, getting loans from American, British, Swedish and other banks. Interest rates were very high, almost to the point of bankrupting the borrowers. Ivar Kreuger's methods for survival in the "international theatre", included new ways for governments, to become supported by industry, internationally. This and other matters made him a competitor to the "Finance Industry". The Depression of the late 1920s became a nancial disaster for many. Ivar's activities and financial agreements with many countries, helped their governments, but hurt the international banks, which needed the business for their survival. In the US alone, shareholders, receiving handsome dividends continuously, all of a sudden lost some $ 500 million, after Ivar's death. Ivar Kreuger was found dead in one of his apartments, in Paris, on 12 March 1932, having been murdered. Lars-Jonas has succeeded in presenting the proof(s) of this, of who the opposition was who, while saying that it was suicide, succeeded in taking Ivar's life and plundering his empire. Ivar Kreuger was a tremendous asset to the World. He tried to help, where help was needed and did a spectacular job of it, to the end.

More than a decade has passed since the last comprehensive survey of U.S. journalists was carried out in 2002 by scholars at Indiana University—and the news and the journalists who produce it have undergone dramatic changes and challenges. The American Journalist in the Digital Age is based on interviews with a national probability sample of nearly 1,100 U.S. journalists in the fall of 2013 to document the tremendous changes that have occurred in U.S. journalism in the past decade, many of them due to the rise of new communication technologies and social media. This survey of journalists updates the findings from previous studies and asks new questions about the impact of new technologies and social media in the newsroom, and it includes more nontraditional online journalists than the previous studies.

Run-time Adaptation for Reconfigurable Embedded Processors

Run-time Adaptation for Reconfigurable Embedded Processors

Embedded processors are the heart of embedded systems. Reconfigurable embedded processors comprise an extended instruction set that is implemented using a reconfigurable fabric (similar to a field-programmable gate array, FPGA). This book presents novel concepts, strategies, and implementations to increase the run-time adaptivity of reconfigurable embedded processors. Concepts and techniques are presented in an accessible, yet rigorous context. A complex, realistic H.264 video encoder application with a high demand for adaptivity is presented and used as an example for motivation throughout the book. A novel, run-time system is demonstrated to exploit the potential for adaptivity and particular approaches/algorithms are presented to implement it.

Coordinative Practices in the Building Process: An Ethnographic Perspective presents the principles of the practice-oriented research programmes in the CSCW and HCI domains, explaining and examining the ideas and motivations behind basing technology design on ethnography. The focus throughout is on generating ethnographically informed accounts of the building process and discussing the concepts of cooperative work and coordinative practices in order to frame technology development. Lars Rune Christensen provides an invaluable resource for these communities in this book. Illustrated with real examples from the building process, he reports on the cooperative work and coordinative practices found, allowing readers to feel that they know, from the point of view of the people working in the building process, what it is like to coordinate and do this kind of cooperative work.
