Religion, Tradition, and Restorative Justice in Sierra Leone

Religion, Tradition, and Restorative Justice in Sierra Leone

Lyn S. Graybill

University of Notre Dame Press
2017
sidottu
In this groundbreaking study of post-conflict Sierra Leone, Lyn Graybill examines the ways in which both religion and local tradition supported restorative justice initiatives such as the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and village-level Fambul Tok ceremonies. Through her interviews with Christian and Muslim leaders of the Inter-Religious Council, Graybill uncovers a rich trove of perspectives about the meaning of reconciliation, the role of acknowledgment, and the significance of forgiveness. Through an abundance of polling data and her review of traditional practices among the various ethnic groups, Graybill also shows that these perspectives of religious leaders did not at all conflict with the opinions of the local population, whose preferences for restorative justice over retributive justice were compatible with traditional values that prioritized reconciliation over punishment. These local sentiments, however, were at odds with the international community's preference for retributive justice, as embodied in the Special Court for Sierra Leone, which ran concurrently with the TRC. Graybill warns that with the dominance of the International Criminal Court in Africa—there are currently eighteen pending cases in eight countries—local preferences may continue to be sidelined in favor of prosecutions. She argues that the international community is risking the loss of its most valuable assets in post-conflict peacebuilding by pushing aside religious and traditional values of reconciliation in favor of Western legal norms.
Film Semiotics, Metz, and Leone's Trilogy
Semiotics offers a systematic approach to analysing the stylistic structure of film. When this study was originally published in 1983 this was a recent addition to the methods of film study and it presents an explanation of film semiotics with direct application to comparative film research. It takes as its representative subject one trilogy of films and applies semiology, with careful textual analysis. The book begins with a basic introduction to semiotics and the ideas of Christian Metz on cinesemiotics. It then presents a syntagmatic analysis of each of the three Dollars films, with an outline of autonomous segments for each and a discussion of the findings before undertaking a wider analysis of the trilogy as a whole with commentary on the stylistic unity of the director’s work. This book, an enduring detailed study of these three films, also outlines clearly this method of classifying the formal structuring codes of film communication.
H. C. Bankole-Bright and Politics in Colonial Sierra Leone, 1919–1958
This substantial and thoroughly documented book is a political biography of an important figure in Sierra Leone. It is also a comment on two of the major themes of the country’s history - the relations between the Colony (Krio society) and the Protectorate (the earlier inhabitants of the territory) and, more importantly, the position of the imperial regime vis-á-vis its colonial subjects. The author, a Sierra Leonean and a Krio himself, skilfully examines the country’s recent history through the life of Dr H. C. Bankole-Bright, an important leader of the Krio people. The Krio, descendants of the freed slaves, were the elite of Sierra Leone for more than a century, but ultimately they failed to master mass electorial politics during the period of decolonization leading to independence. Dr Bankole-Bright’s failure is seen as emblematic of the disappointed hopes of the Krio as a political group in Sierra Leone. An underlying theme of the book is the misrepresentation of the Krio people in Sierra Leone historiography.

Civil Society in Africa: Models, History and Explosions of Civic Action in Sierra Leone
Civil Society in Africa is a testament to Sesay's brilliance and mastery of the pen. Erudite, engaging, and gracefully written, this brilliant book takes us through a tantalising journey of Sierra Leone's complicated political terrain and its histories, the sophistication of its everyday street lingo, and the conditions and predicament of democratic accountability in the West African state. Anybody interested in the quotidian banality of Sierra Leonean political life and the forces that shape it will do well to read this book.Zubairu Wai, Lakehead University, Canada.Dr. Sesay has traced the history of, and untangled the intricate workings of civil society, undertaken by student activists, ordinary citizens and other groupings in a country with a fledgling democracy, to promote socio-political and national development agendas. The role of civil society in Sierra Leone today is more critical than it has ever been. Individuals who are interested in understanding the country's efforts in crystallizing its democratic credentials and advancing its development aspirations must consider owning a copy of this publication. Prof. Mohamed Kanu, Tennessee State University, USAThe pages kept turning, one at a time until I finished the book and started reading it all over again. The deep and provoking thoughts on the evolution, nature and character of civil society in Sierra Leone, juxtaposed with the country's tumultuous history provide rich analysis and perspectives that no other book has ever provided on the civil society landscape in Sierra Leone. It makes for easy read and easily captures and challenges the mind of the reader. The book is unputdownable and a highly recommended must read. Academics, policy makers and development workers would benefit enormously from its rich and inspiring accounts.Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, Senior Lecturer, University of Sierra LeoneThe case for the study of 'real civil society' that are embedded in Africa is long overdue; studies that are descriptive, explanatory, reflexive; studies expanding our insights through different actors, over several eras, and that are not dominated by occidental prescriptive orientations. Studying civil society this way captures its configurations, processes and motives; and it helps us see the vital role civil society plays in the development of any country. This contribution by Dr. Mohamed Gibril Sesay has done just that Fr. Dr. Joseph Turay, Vice Chancellor, University of Makeni, Sierra
