Luther Gregory, newly assigned to the spaceship SS ATTM, wants to prove himself as a soldier and engineer. To his surprise, he's not given an engineering position. Instead, Luther's given a choice: accept a position as Valve in Training, a job he knows nothing about, or become the ship's mail clerk and fade away into lonely obscurity. Luther studies the cold blue eyes of the current Valve, Jane Wingfield, and decides the unknown is a better option than the mail room.Meanwhile, pressure is building in the engine room. A new device has been installed aboard the SS ATTM, and it's causing the engine's heart to malfunction. Jane Wingfield is quick to point out the dangers to the ship's officers, but they refuse to act. The officers want the new device up and running no matter what the cost. Desperate to save the ship and crew, Jane turns to recruit Luther for help. Together, Valve and Valve in Training race through the ship. They assemble an odd but determined team of would-be heroes: the security chief, an absent-minded genius, the ship's janitor, and a small boy with his pet chinchilla, Sparky. But Luther's worried; what will the team do if saving the ship and crew means they must defy the officers? Can the new Valve in Training bring himself to risk his career, maybe even his life?Time is running out. If Luther doesn't find his courage soon, his first day on board the SS ATTM will be everyone's last. The Heart's Fire is Book 1 of the sci-fi Hearts Trilogy.

What does it mean that the Psalms are the prayer book of the people? Rocking Like It's All Intermezzo: Twenty-first-Century Psalm Responsorials is one such person's prayer book. Using familiar refrains as their starting points, the poems attempt a balance between how the psalmist understood God's faithfulness and how the poet's lived experience requires revised understanding in some places, renewed commitment in others. In addition to an insightful foreword by acclaimed poet Sofia M. Starnes, these sixty-four poems tell of an intimate, honest reorientation to God's promises.

Increasingly, people are shifting to vegetarian, plant-based, or vegan diets. This shift is having profound effects on our social interactions, and this is the focus of this book. Becoming a vegetarian or vegan involves more than just changing your diet. It can change how you socially and emotionally connect with family, friends and the broader community, shape your outlook on life, and open up new worlds and contacts. It can also lead to uncomfortable situations, if dietary choices involving a rejection of meat are read by others as an ethical and moral judgement on mainstream dietary choices. This book adopts an innovative narrative approach, and draws on stories across the globe to consider how the food choices we make in our everyday lives can lead to complex, and sometimes life changing, social consequences. The narratives cover a range of topics, including the moral reasons behind some individuals’ decision to change their diets, the religious or ecological considerations, and the potential health and social ramifications. To date, the social consequences of selecting a plant-based diet have been sorely overlooked in favour of texts that have documented the benefits of such diets, and usually focus on health, animal welfare and/or environmental issues, with the aim of persuading readers to give up meat, and change to a ‘healthy’ and/or ‘sustainable’ diet. Cultural studies texts considering vegetarianism or veganism have typically targeted academic audiences with analyses of how identity is constructed through food and dietary choices. In contrast, this book offers a unique window onto how our social lives are implicated in our food choices, and is critical in understanding the importance of diet as embedded in complex social processes.

Though generally a peaceful coastal city, the dark stains from Santa Cruz s past still linger. A former Spanish Mission, Holy Cross Catholic Church harbors a dark history of a brutal revolt of native Ohlone Indians that killed the cruel Father Andres Quintana. Frequented by mobsters and celebrities in its heyday, the famous Brookdale Lodge s most talked-about guest is the ghost of a little girl who died nearby in 1892 after nearly drowning. Terrorized by three different serial killers during the 1970s, the city earned the nickname of the Murder Capital of the World. Local resident Alfred Hitchcock derived inspiration for his iconic film Psycho from the haunted mid-nineteenth-century Hotel McRay. Tracing the city s eeriest incidents back to their roots, historical researcher and paranormal investigator Maryanne Porter details these and many more stories of local legend and lore."
