Matthew the Hebrew Gospel is the third volume of Carrolls work in process on the four gospels. Carroll helps you to see why Matthew was written and why it is the first book of the New Testament. Matthews gospel was written in the Hebrew language first and later translated into the Greek. Matthews gospel was also written much earlier than scholars have taught. Carroll brings out many of the Jewish customs, history, geography as well as many personal experiences throughout this amazing work. The Bible will come together as he helps you to connect Old Testament passages to the ministry of Jesus the Messiah. Carroll has put together years of research into an easy-read format for ministers and laypeople alike.

Matthew 25: Symbolic Vision - Parabolic Living

Matthew 25: Symbolic Vision - Parabolic Living

William J. Bohn

Many people are familiar with Jesus's teachings in Matthew 25, all of which are frequently cited and discussed from the pulpit. But an exhaustive, book-length study of this critical chapter in scripture will enhance your understanding of Christ's message and his vision for your testimony-and motivate you to grow as one of his disciples. In Matthew 25: Symbolic Vision-Parabolic Living, the second of three books with a Mormon audience in mind on the use of imagery to explain the principles of vision and discipleship in scripture, author William J. Bohn focuses on Jesus's portrait of patterns of discipleship. Three chapters are devoted respectively to the parable of the ten virgins, the parable of the talents, and the similitude of the Last Judgment. A final chapter then explains the unity of vision in these three famous narratives in the Olivet Discourse. Bohn supports his work with extensive references from a variety of sources, including the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and myriad general authorities and church scholars, resulting in a study of Christ's insight into the true nature of eternal life.

Matthew, Disability, and Stress

Matthew, Disability, and Stress

Jillian D. Engelhardt

In Matthew, Disability, and Stress: Examining Impaired Characters in the Context of Empire, Jillian D. Engelhardt examines four Matthean healing narratives, focusing on the impaired characters in the scenes. Her reading is informed by both empire studies and social stress theory, a method that explores how the stress inherent in social location can affect psychosomatic health. By examining the Roman imperial context in which common folk lived and worked, she argues that attention to social and somatic circumstances, which may have accompanied or caused the described disabilities/impairments, destabilizes readings of these stories that suggest the encounter with Jesus was straightforwardly good and the healing was permanent. Instead, Engelhardt proposes various new contexts for and offers more nuanced characterizations of the disabled/impaired people in each discussed scene, resulting in ambiguous interpretations that de-center Jesus and challenge able-bodied assumptions about embodiment, disability, and healing.

This book addresses the ways in which the Gospel of Matthew portrays and negotiates Roman military power. John E. Christianson argues that Matthew, writing in the years following the Jewish War, offers strategies such as avoidance, accommodation, non-violent resistance, mimicry, and dreams of divine retribution and eschatological fulfillment to help his audience cope with life in Roman Syria. With an eye toward the ways that military structures and networks of social power functioned to increase imperial control over people and territory, Christianson shows how Matthew's strategies include ways to help his audience negotiate potentially dangerous encounters with Roman military personnel. This includes texts that address the possibility of state sanctioned violence by Roman aligned rulers Herod and Antipas; the abuse of requisitioned labor in Roman angaria; Jesus' response to the direct request of a centurion with opaque motivations; a vision of retribution on Roman eagles by the eschatological Son of Man, and soldiers' response to Jesus' death and resurrection as a prelude to divine overthrow of Roman military power. In all cases, this book demonstrates how interpretation of Matthew's narrative must account for the pervasive presence of the Roman military in the ancient world.

Matthew's Gospel in Cherokee: Expanded Bilingual Edition

Matthew's Gospel in Cherokee: Expanded Bilingual Edition

Our Expanded Bilingual Editions present the Cherokee text in both old and new syllabary, Cherokee phonetics, and King James English to facilitate study and retention of the Cherokee language. Matthew's Gospel is a companion to the Cherokee New Testament digitized and released in 2013. Translated into Cherokee in the nineteenth century under the direction of Revs. Samuel Worcester and Elias Boudinot, the Cherokee New Testament is the largest complex text composed in Cherokee by fluent speakers with an command of a high level of the language. For generations, the New Testament has been used by Cherokees of all persuasions to learn to speak and write as their ancestors did. Perhaps more so than the other Gospels, Matthew was written to Jewish Christians rather than gentile converts. Matthew draws parallels between Jesus' experiences and those of Israel itself, with five long sermons paralleling the five books of Moses: Sermon on the Mount, Missionary Discourse, Parables, Discourse on the Church, Olivet Discourse. Matthew shows greater respect for Jewish law and tradition than do the other Gospel authors, even making a point of using the phrase "kingdom of heaven" 31 times, where other gospels say "kingdom of God", to avoid using God's name in vain. The respect for indigenous tradition is shown in little ways, such as the translation of "hell" as tsusgina-yi, literally, "ghost land" of Cherokee tradition. We hope that this volume, richly illustrated with the work of Gustave Dore, is a blessing for both your intellect and spirit.
Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp

This book explores the contribution to education contained in the theoretical work and teaching practice of Matthew Lipman (1923-2010) and Ann Margaret Sharp (1942-2010). Their long-lasting cooperation gave rise to the well-known “Philosophy for Children” (P4C) curriculum, which is nowadays globally widespread. P4C basically relies on the following innovations: firstly, the unprecedented connection between philosophy and childhood; secondly, the reframing of philosophy in practical, viz., not reductively theoretical terms; thirdly, the employment of philosophy to foster democracy and moral capabilities through the development of children’s thoughtfulness and autonomous thinking, which would eventually result in empowering children’s social abilities and increasing their self-defence against consumerism, propaganda, and manipulation; finally, the stand against a strictly cognitivist approach to education. More than just contextualizing these innovations in the coeval historical and social context, the author shows that P4C’s revolutionary stance on education relies on the fruitfulness of Lipman and Sharp’s intellectual cooperation and on their manifold abilities as researchers, teachers, trainers, communicators, motivators, and community-builders. The book analyzes their philosophical-educational vision and the scholastic curriculum they developed jointly; additionally, it provides a critical appraisal of P4C’s achievements as well as of its future perspectives.
