Café Racers of 50s and 60s

Café Racers of 50s and 60s

Various events contrived to bring about the cafe racer era, together with the advent of the rocker - and subsequently mod - cults. New motorcycles such as the BSA Gold Star singles and star twins, Norton Dominator, Royal Enfield Meteor and Constellation, Triumph Tiger 110 and Thunderbird and Velocette Venom created a new breed of enthusiast. Films such as Marlon Brando's The Wild One expressed, albeit in somewhat extreme form, the biker-as-rebel philosophy. Add to this the potency of that biggest of all pop music phenomena, rock'n'roll, and the ingredients were all in place.
Case Studies in Clinical Linguistics

Case Studies in Clinical Linguistics

Mick Perkins; Sara Howard

Whurr Publishers Ltd
1995
nidottu
This work aims to bring together a wide-ranging set of clinical linguistic case studies covering all levels of linguistic analysis and demonstrating the application of more than one level of linguistic analysis to individual cases. It focuses on "patient-driven" cases. The authors aim to demonstrate the collaborative nature of applied linguistics by illustrating the kind of service that speech and language therapists may reasonably ask of linguists, without feeling that they need have expertize in this area themselves. The case studies include a representative range of communication disorders and involve a wide range of areas of linguistics and phonetics. Most of the studies incoporate complementary analysis at several linguistic levels, and involve a wide variety of analytical techniques including standard assessments and profiling procedures, instrumental and computational procedures, and improvised materials tailored to the specific nature of individual cases.

Elvis Died For Somebody's Sins...
That he has survived so long may well be a miracle. Mick Farren has spent more than four decades in the thick of the culture wars as a commentator, activist, essayist, poet, performer, and rebel with multiple causes. Being a founding figure in the 1960s underground press, who was forced to defend his work at The Old Bailey, might well be sufficient laurels on which to rest, but, instead, he careered on through the London birth pangs of punk, the intoxicated madness of Lower Manhattan under Ronald Reagan, earthquakes and urban insurrection in Los Angeles. He has written for IT, Oz, NME, The Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times, and countless other publications great and small. And as if that wasn't enough, Farren has also taken time out to publish some two dozen sci-fi/psychedelic/Gothic novels and create an entire catalogue of rock'n'roll songs, not only for his own band The Deviants but also for Hawkwind, The Pink Fairies, Motorhead, and Metallica. Back home in England, part of his time has been spent assembling this sample volume of his provocative and at times quite alarming body of work. "Within these pages you'll meet the likes of Frank Zappa, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry and Gore Vidal, and steam open correspondence between the author and Pete Townshend. And, much more importantly, you're about to go one-on-one with a world-class raconteur... Sounds like a good time to me. If this kind of mess-around seems like your cup of meat, then prepare your relaxant of choice, kick back and dig in. The greasy 'oodlums are at your door." Charles Shaar Murray, from his Foreword. "And how is that nice friend of yours? The one with the robots?" Felix Dennis, from his Preface

The Thames

The Thames

Mick Sinclair

Signal Books Ltd
2007
nidottu
It may not be the longest, deepest or widest river in the world but few bodies of water reveal as much about a nation's past and present, or are suggestive of its future, as England's River Thames. Tales of legendary lock-keepers and long-vanished weirs evoke the distant past of a river which evolved into a prime commercial artery linking the heart of England with the ports of Europe. In Victorian times, the Thames hosted regattas galore, its new bridges and tunnels were celebrated as marvels of their time, and London's river was transformed from sewer to centrepiece of the British Empire. Talk of the Thames Gateway and the effectiveness of the Thames Barrier keeps the river in the news today, while the lengthening Thames Path makes the waterway more accessible than ever before. Through quiet meadows, rolling hills, leafy suburbia, industrial sites and a changing London riverside, Mick Sinclair tracks the Thames from source to sea, documenting internationally-known landmarks such as Tower Bridge and Windsor Castle and revealing lesser known features such as Godstow Abbey, Canvey Island, the Sanford Lasher, and George Orwell's tranquil grave. Paintings, Words and Music: Turner, Tissot, Whistler and Monet; Shakespeare at Southwark, Alexander Pope, Charles Dickens, Jerome K. Jerome, William Morris; Handel's Water Music, the first rendition of Rule Britannia, the Rolling Stones and The Who rocking Eel Pie Island. Power, Politics and Intrigue: Runnymede and Magna Carta, the first English parliament, Whitehall Palace, Cliveden and the Profumo affair, the Houses of Parliament and the brooding headquarters of MI5 and MI6. Trade and Commerce: Eel trapping, osier growing; bargemen, watermen and lightermen; the rise and fall of London's docks; urban regeneration, rural protection.
Interpreting the English Village

Interpreting the English Village

Mick Aston; Christopher Gerrard

Windgather Press
2013
nidottu
An original and approachable account of how archaeology can tell the story of the English village. Shapwick lies in the middle of Somerset, next to the important monastic centre of Glastonbury: the abbey owned the manor for 800 years from the 8th to the 16th century and its abbots and officials had a great influence on the lives of the peasants who lived there. It is possible that abbot Dunstan, one of the great reformers of tenth century monasticism directed the planning of the village. The Shapwick Project examined the development and history of an English parish and village over a ten thousand-year period. This was a truly multi-disciplinary project. Not only were a battery of archaeological and historical techniques explored - such as field walking, test-pitting, archaeological excavation, aerial reconnaissance, documentary research and cartographic analysis - but numerous other techniques such as building analysis, dendrochronological dating and soil analysis were undertaken on a large scale. The result is a fascinating study about how the community lived and prospered in Shapwick. In addition we learn how a group of enthusiastic and dedicated scholars unravelled this story. As such there is much here to inspire and enthuse others who might want to embark on a landscape study of a parish or village area. Seven of the ten chapters begin with a fictional vignette to bring the story of the village to life. Text-boxes elucidate re-occurring themes and techniques. Extensively illustrated in colour including 100 full page images. This title was the winner of the 2014 British Archaeological Association's Best Archaeological Book Award.

Given the splendours of Angkor Thom together with another 90 temple sites within the Angkor Archaeological Park, it is no wonder that Cambodia is dubbed the 'Kingdom of Wonder'. Porter Press International

This book tells the remarkable history of an Alfa Romeo Monza and its characterful drivers and owners, some with life stories worthy of a movie script. Built in 1933, '221130' was raced that year by the Hon. Brian Lewis and won its debut at Brooklands and the arduous Mannin Moar race on the Isle of Man. The car continued to be raced until the war by John Cobb (1934) who later was a land speed record holder, Luis Fontes (1935) who was also an aeroplane racer, Anthony Powys-Lybbe (1936-37) and Fay Taylour (1938) who was interned during the Second World War for her Fascist links, at venues as diverse as Vila Real (Portugal) and Phoenix Park (Ireland). Post-war, a succession of notable owners included Peter Hampton, the Hon. Patrick Lindsay and Hubert Fabri, all passionate collectors, to arrive at its status today as one of the more important surviving Monzas, and a car with so much charisma and historic interest that it is a most worthy addition to the acclaimed 'Great Cars' series

El Ni o is the exciting debut novel from Irish Screenwriter and Playwright Mick Donnellan. Slick, stylish and always entertaining, the story is a rollercoaster of drama and tension that hasn't been seen in Irish fiction for a very long time. Charlie is our protagonist, the pickpocket that steals El Nino's wallet and then falls in love with her. She's the wild femme fatale, beautiful; enigmatic and seductive. Her father named her El Ni o because the night she was born there was a storm, and he said it signified the way she was to live her life. Dark and edgy with crisp fresh dialogue, this is a novel that engages the reader from the first line right through to the powerful finish. Review Excerpt .."..perhaps the most exciting part of this publication is that it comes from the heart of Mayo. Set in Ballinrobe, then spanning to Galway and back again, Donnellan has taken the West of Ireland and firmly placed it on the crime writing map. With flavours of Dashiel Hammet and Micky Spillane, the author never loses sight of his own locality. The poetry of Ireland's West is always fresh on the page. Everything from the bustle of Galway city, to the curious streets of Ballinrobe bounces off the book with the kind of vivid imagery and poetic description worthy of the world's finest writers. Apparently, we have entered an explosive time for West of Ireland fiction and long may it last..."
